II KANSAS CITY, MO., THURSDAY, MARCH 23,' 1911 No. 46 Plain Living and High Thinking Extracts from Mr. Fillmore’s Sunday morning talk in Unity Audito- rium, March 19, 1911. Emerson gave the statement as a truism that plain living and high thinking go to- gether. The lesson for us is what rela- tion these bear one to the other, and hav- ing found the relation, to apply it in our own lives. We all desire 'to think high, to get greater conceptions of Truth, to know the deep things of life. But if we would ele- vate our thinking—that is, think spiritu- ally—we must give.attention to the fires down in the basement; because if the fires are clogged, or if the fuel is not of the right kind, if there is too much fuel or not enough, or if it is of poor quality, there will not be the right combination of forces in the body, and the mental and physical processes will be interfered with. We make no division between body and mind; these are but states of consciousness, and it is the joining of these that makes man’s body. He builds himself out of his thought. The lesson which we have to-day (Dan - iel 1: 8-20) is not the first which the Scrip - tures give us as showing the relation be- tween plain living and high thinking. In the very first book of the Bible we are told that the first man was a plain liver and a high thinker. That man, you re- member, was given the herbs of the field and the fruits of the tree for food. We see in the beginning, and all the way along in the scriptural history of man, that he was a plain liver. The spies brought out of the promised land not game, but fruits. Jesus himself was a plain liver, the simplest of all, and nowhere will we find a higher thinker. The simple life allows man an oppor- tunity to think about spiritual things. It is the worries about the complex and ex- pensive needs of life which the sense man takes upon himself, that prevent his living in the Spirit. Daniel chose a diet of pulse and water instead of the king’s meat, and “Daniel had wisdom in dreams and visions.” All people have dreams and visions, but all have not wisdom to know the meaning of them. Here was the difference between the great magicians of Babylon and Dan- iel. God gave him wisdom and he could interpret dreams. When the waters of life in the body are pure they easily reflect Divine Ideas. The complex food combinations of so- called “civilized life” are out of harmony with natural law. Nature combines the food elements in right proportions, and our stomachs would be glad if we gave them vegetables, cereals, and fruits in their nat- ural state. Every product of the earth represents an idea, and when we eat and drink in the Spirit we feed both mind and body. False appetites can be transformed by purifying

Plain Living and High Thinking

E xtra c ts from M r. F illm ore’s Sunday morning ta lk in U nity A ud ito

rium , M arch 19, 1911.

Em erson gave the statem ent as a truism th a t p la in living and high th ink ing go to gether. T he lesson for us is w hat re la tion these bear one to the o ther, and having found the relation , to app ly it in our own lives.

W e all desire 'to th ink high, to get g rea te r conceptions of T ru th , to know the deep th ings of life. B ut if we would elevate our th ink ing— th a t is, th ink sp iritu ally— we m ust g iv e .a tten tio n to the fires down in the basem ent; because if the fires a re clogged, or if the fuel is not of the rig h t kind, if the re is too much fuel or not enough, or if it is of poor quality , there w ill not be the rig h t com bination of forces in the body, and the m ental and physical processes w ill be in te rfe red w ith. W e make no division between body and m in d ; these are bu t states of consciousness, and it is the jo in in g of these th a t makes m an’s body. H e builds him self out of his thought.

T he lesson which we have to-day (D a n iel 1: 8-20) is not the first which the S crip tu res give us as showing the rela tion betw een p la in living and high th inking. In the very first book of the B ible we are told th a t the first m an was a p lain liver and a high th inker. T h a t m an, you re

member, was given the herbs of the field and the fru its of the tree for food. We see in the beginning, and all the way along in the sc rip tu ra l history of man, tha t he was a p lain liver. T he spies brought out of the prom ised land not game, but fru its. Jesus him self was a p lain liver, the sim plest of all, and nowhere will we find a higher th inker.

T he sim ple life allows m an an opportun ity to th ink about sp iritua l things. I t is the w orries about the complex and expensive needs of life which the sense man takes upon him self, th a t p reven t his living in the S p irit.

D an iel chose a diet of pulse and w ater instead of the k ing ’s meat, and “ D aniel had wisdom in dream s and visions.” All people have dream s and visions, but all have not wisdom to know the m eaning of them . H ere was the difference between the g rea t m agicians of B abylon and D aniel. God gave him wisdom and he could in te rp re t dream s. W hen the w aters of life in the body are pu re they easily reflect D ivine Ideas.

T he com plex food combinations of so- called “civilized life” are out of harm ony w ith n a tu ra l law. N a tu re combines the food elem ents in rig h t p roportions, and our stom achs would be glad if we gave them vegetables, cereals, and fru its in the ir na tu ra l state.

E v ery product of the ea rth represents an idea, and when we ea t and drink in the S p irit we feed both m ind and body. False appetites can be transfo rm ed by purify ing

the food and affirming T ru th . A m an once told me th a t he was healed of drunkenness by affirming, “ I do not love w hisky, I love God.” G radually the desire for the false stim ulant passed away, and he felt a much g rea ter satisfaction from S p irit th an he ever had from whisky. H e p u t in to p rac tice w hat Jesus ta u g h t; he made the w ord of God his subsistence. W hen m an satisfies his craving in th is m anner he is a tru e overcomer.

W e may consider th a t we are p la in livers, but if the re is evidence of grossness in body it is very clear th a t we are not high th inkers. W e may have high thoughts in mind, bu t we have not given them an opportunity to m anifest in body.

Sim ple living does not lead to high thinking, bu t the converse— high th ink ing urges sim ple living. A daily m editation upon sp iritua l sub jects w ill be followed by a desire for sim pler food. Some people are stim ulating them selves because they have not realized the stim ulating power of the S p irit. These are not necessarily whisky d ru n k a rd s ; the re a re those who depend upon coffee, tea , cocoa, etc., as. a means of stim ulation. I f you have a headache because you did not get your m orning coffee or your evening tea, you have not entered into the h igher thought th a t S p irit is the source and sustainer of your body.

D an iel asked wisdom of God, and it was revealed to him. F irs t look up to God, and then follow out the suggestions th a t you get. Some of us do no t follow these inspirations of the S p irit, depending

ra th e r upon the exam ple or teaching of personality . I f you have been in high sta tes of thought, it w ill come to you to do certain things. I f you are wise you will follow the h in t from w ith in , ra th e r than the au thority of m an or book. “W hen he, the S p irit of tru th , is come, he w ill lead you into a ll tru th .”
