TRANSCRIPT
■ OpenHydro, a DCNS Energies company, specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of marine turbines generating renewable energy from tidal streams.
■ The company’s vision is to deploy tidal turbine arrays under the surface of the oceansto produce energy with minimal impact on the environment.
■ In 2016, OpenHydro made industry historyconnecting North America’s most powerfultidal turbine to the grid.
Predictable marine energy
THE GLOBAL TIDAL ENERGY MARKET IS WORTH €200 BILLION. OPENHYDRO HAS ALMOST 1GW OF PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UTILITY COMPANIES AND DEVELOPERS
IN 2016, IN THE BAY OF FUNDY, NOVA SCOTIA, OPENHYDRO, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH EMERA, CONNECTED WITH SUCCESS A 16-METRES TURBINE TO THE GRID
OPENHYDRO HAS BEEN SELECTED BY THE JAPANESE MINISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT TO SUPPLY A TIDAL TURBINE SYSTEM FOR INSTALLATION AT NARU STRAIT, NAGASAKI PREFECTURE

OpenHydro is partnering with energy giants such as Emera and EDF to deliver projects in the world’s leading tidal sites.
International projects
OpenHydro’s open-centre turbine comprises four key components: a horizontal axis rotor, a direct-drive permanent magnet generator, a hydrodynamic duct and a subsea gravity base foundation.
OpenHydro’s unique barge can deploy a turbine within sixty minutes. This specialist methodology ensures all preparatory works can be performed in the controlled working environment of a harbour.
Turbine control centre
The turbines, supported by subsea base foundations, are placed directly onto the seabed, deep enough not to interfere with shipping.
The Turbine Control Centre (TCC) is geared towards exporting predictable, reliable energy to the grid. It facilitates an architecture which requires only a single sub-sea cable to landfall: producing a transformation in the economics of array development. Cape Sharp Tidal in Canada has been the fi rst project to benefi t from the TCC.
