INTRODUCTIONANDBACKGROUNDTheSanDiegoandImperialCountiesStrongWorkforceProgram(SWP)isbuildingaregionalsystemtosupportitstencommunitycollegesinimplementingprogramsandservicesthatwilldevelopstudents’careerknowledgeandnavigationskills,aswellastheirabilitytoacquireemploymentuponcompletionoftheirprogramofstudy.Sevenworkgroupswereestablishedtocarryoutthismission:

Appliedandwork-basedlearningarecriticalstrategiesfordeepeninglearningandpreparingstudentsforfuturecareeropportunities.Improvedjobplacementservicesarealsocriticalformanystudentsseekingemployment.Workgroup4:Work-BasedLearningandJobPlacement,wastaskedwithexpandingandimprovingappliedandwork-basedlearning(WBL)opportunitiesthroughouttheregion.Akeystepinthistaskwastoconductanassessmenttolearnmoreaboutthewayswork-basedlearningandjobplacementarebeingimplementedatthe10collegesandanyneedsforsupport.

DESCRIPTIONOFTHESWPASSESSMENTSURVEYSToconducttheassessment,Workgroup4,withsupportfromWestEdandan“assessmentsinglepointofcontact”fromeachofthe10colleges,administeredseveralsurveysinthefallof2018.Thepurposeofthesurveyswastoelicitinputonthetypesofappliedandwork-basedlearningoffered,waysthatcollegesandfacultyimplementappliedandwork-basedlearningandjobplacement,challengesfaced,andneedsforsupport.Thefollowingthreeappliedandwork-basedlearningrelatedsurveyswereadministered:• AppliedandWork-BasedLearningCollegePerspectiveSurvey–thissurveysoughtperspectivesfromkey

staffinvolvedinwork-basedlearningandjobplacementwhocouldprovidethebestcollege-wideperspectiveateachcollege.Itwasrecommendedthatthepeopleinthefollowingrolescompletethissurvey:CareerCenterdirector/coordinator;curriculumchairperson;counselorwhocouldprovidethebestperspectiveonWBLatthecollege;cooperativeworkexperiencedirector/coordinator,andotherkeyrolessuchasthedirectorofexperientialeducation.Thenumberofrespondentspercollegerangedfrom1to9;mostcollegeshad3or4respondentstothecollegeperspectivesurvey.

• AppliedandWork-BasedLearningFacultySurvey–thissurveysoughttogatherinformationfromalltypesoffaculty(bothacademicandcareereducation)acrossthecolleges.

• InventoryofAppliedandWork-BasedLearningOpportunities–thissurveysoughttoprovideacomprehensivecountofwork-basedlearningandjobplacementofferingsandparticipationlevelsateachcampus.

TheconsensusamongthisgroupofrespondentsappearstobethatWBLhelpsbringrelevancetothecurriculum,helpsdevelopskills,andprovidesexposuretotheworldofworkthatcanhelpstudentsclarifytheircareergoalsandsecureemployment.
