Disasters in Haiti, Chile and now Pakistan have brought charitable giving to the front pages. In fact, ithas never been easier, or moretimely, to give donations to the morethan 83,000 registered charitableorganizations in Canada. However, many are concerned whether their
donations will make the differencethey’re hoping for. Take time tochoose a charity carefully, one thatreflects the change you wish to seein the world.
Choosing a Charity If a particular cause doesn’t come tomind, consider in which area youwould like to donate. What are yougrateful for and is there a way t oprovide that support or experiencesto others through your donation.Healthcare, education, arts, socialservices, the environment or religionare common categories. Narrowdown your choice by deciding
whether you want your donation tohave impact at the local, provincial, national or international level. Some charities accept one timedonations or automatic monthlywithdrawals.
Volunteering and In-Kind Giving Some organizations appreciate notonly financial donations, but ones thatinvolve your time and energy as well.Consider volunteering or donating in-kind (non-cash) items. To find outwhich charities are looking for whatitems, visit www.delivergood.org. For
volunteer opportunities visitwww.volunteer.ca or pick up yourlocal community newspaper.
Charity Gift Cards Do you find yourself unsure of what togive for the holiday season, butwanting to make your gift meaningful?Consider a Charity Gift Card, offeredby www.CanadaHelps.org, where thereceiver can choose their own charityin the denomination you’ve giventhem. This is also great for weddingsand otherwise gift-free occasions.
How Much to Give? You can give one-time donations orset up monthly automated donations. Some employers match donations, solook into these incentive programs. Ifyou have appreciated securities suchas stocks, bonds and mutual funds, you can give from your portfolio.
Tax Receipts Most charitable organizations can giveyou a tax receipt for t he amount ofyour donation. If this is something youwant, make sure the organization youchooseprovides this.

Not everyone is going toagree on every decision.Work towards consensusdecisions and respect the
personal preferences ofeach family member.
Put it in writing
A written agreement at theend of the meeting candetail decisions andagreements. Make acalendar highlighting thedays for each familymember’s responsibilitiesand commitments. Eachperson should understandwhat they have agreed todo for or with their relative.

When taking care of an aging loved one or relative, family needs to work together and cooperate to make decisions. While families are comingtogether over the holiday times,it seems a natural time for ameeting to discuss care andconcerns for a loved one.Unfortunately, family meetingsare often fraught with t ensions, underlying fears, entitlements, and can easily turn into a badsituation not wanting to berevisited. If you want productivediscussions to result in decisivestrategies for the care and well-being of your loved one, nowand into the future, keep thefollowing in mind.
Who should attend
Who should be included in thedecision making for the care ofyour loved one? Should theaging loved one be there or not
is often a difficult decision to bemade. Their preferences forcare must be considered eitherway. Some family membersmay feel more comfortable
having at least the first meetingwithout the loved one present. Those with dementia maymisinterpret the purpose of the
meeting and feel threatened. Ifsomeone cannot attend, consider teleconferencing orusing an internet video chat.
Plan a date and give anagenda of the meeting
Setting aside a time just for thisfamily meeting is important, asthe holidays can be very busy.
Stating the purpose of themeeting ahead of time gives alla chance to think about theirfeelings and to consider options.
They may also wish to add tothe agenda.
Holding a Family Meeting Making decisions when family comes together
Consider hiring anoutside facilitator
When it comes to decisionsregarding the care of a lovedone, emotions can damageefforts at communication or
families may be divided on abig issue. Hiring a facilitatorsuch as a social worker, minister, case manager orfamily counselor may improvethe efficiency of time togetherand keep a neutral influence.
Create a supportsystem that cares
People react to illness indifferent ways and this mayleave them feeling frustratedand alienated. Give yourfamily members time tounderstand what is happeningto your loved one and provideas much information aspossible. Don’t assume theydon’t care because they areavoiding the situation, perhaps they do not knowhow to deal with their ownemotional reaction to theillness. Find those who areavailable and make efforts tobe there in your own way.Join support groups, contactsocial network groups forthose with similar illnessesand disabilities. Reassureyour loved ones that they arenever alone in their situation.
Setting the tone
Choose a location everyonemay be comfortable with anddetermine a time to finish themeeting so there is the need
to work together to makedecisions in a timely manner.Use “I” statements, giveeveryone a chance to beheardand tr to understand

For many, driving often goes hand-in-hand with independence. Asking an aging loved one to give up their license is like asking them to give up their life. However, the safety of the elderly driver to themselves and other motorists is a consideration not to be taken lightly and i s more important than the sense of freedom that being a driver gives.
Determining when it is nolonger safe to drive is agradual and difficultrealization both for thesenior themselves and thefamily. It is especiallydifficult when dementia isalso a factor. In themeantime, there are waysto ensure safer driving:
• Drive during the day. Night time drivingposes obvious safety concerns aroundvision and reaction time.
• Get vision tested regularly and be sureto update your eyeglasses to thecurrent prescription.
• Medications may affect your concentrationor ability to react while driving. Discussthese concerns with your health careprofessional or pharmacist.
• Leave the house early and never rush.Speeding is a dangerous activity asyour reaction time is lessened.
• Know where you’re going. Be sure to havestudied your map if you’re going somewherenew. Stop safely on the side of the road orat a gas station to check your map.
• Consider that taxi services and publictransportation can be a safe and efficientway to get around.
