Main Messages from Brussels

Work with non-traditional partners in Europe Nordic countries, Ireland/UK, Netherlands,

Eastern Europe.

Be involved in the drafting of the application by the European university (see quality

questions in application form).

Negotiate your Inter-institutional Agreement carefully Language requirements, student

support , Organizational support…

Split of tasks and responsibilities should be reflected in split of OS.

Problematic tax legislation in some countries

• HEIs, NAs and NEOs need to dialogue with tax authorities and relevant Ministries (e.g. in Poland new law on tax exemption is expected by the end of the year)

Problematic tac legislation:Estoniastnarg ffats morf detcuded eb ot sdeen xat emocni :Slovenia: Grants are regarded as additional funds and taxedFinland: Grants of incoming PhDs exceeding 6 months are taxablePoland seirtnuoc driht morf snezitic ot deilppa selur noitaxaT :seciffo laicnanif 'sIEH emos yb dootsrednu yltnereffid

Norway: tax authorities can in theory require taxes from incoming PhD candidates and staff

Best practice examples:Some HEIs deduct taxes from OSDirect provision (e.g. pay accomodation and travel)Organise shorter mobilitiesMinistry of Science and Higher Education and Ministry of Finance working on solution to exempt third country incoming students and staff from taxation

Managing your grantsTips for success

Make revisions to maximize the number of mobilities implemented (e.g.

substitute student to staff mobilities etc.)

Update your partners ASAP if you cannot realize your mobility grants.

Cooperate through shared platforms (e.g. joint staff weeks)

Maintain good communication with partners throughout project duration.
