When sin had separated us from you, you sent “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” to us. This Easter morning, we understand those words. Jesus took our sins on His shoulders. He carried them to a cross. He buried them with him in a tomb. Then He rose from death to life to show us that if we trust Him, our sins can be forgiven; fully, finally and forever. May that wonderful knowledge fill our hearts this day we pray. Amen. Assurance of Pardon Easter Sunday - 2017 Jesus Christ is risen today! At First Presbyterian we’re glad you’re here with us on this Easter Sunday to celebrate. We like to say “we’re a family of faith with a place for you.” We hope you sense the presence of the risen Christ with us as we worship together today. May the joy of Easter and the “living hope” that it brings inspire all of us this morning. L: Hear the good news! “Who is in a position to condemn us?” P: “Only Christ, and Christ has died for us. He rose from the dead for us. He sits at the right hand of God to intercede for us.” In Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. Whether, then, it is I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. Questions for Study and Discussion 1. Paul persecuted the early church and killed believers, before becoming an apostle. He says “by the grace of God, I am what I am,” and that God’s grace was sufficient to bring him to faith and forgiveness. Are there things in your life you fear might separate you from God’s grace? Can you get some encouragement from Paul’s story? 2. Celebrating Christ’s resurrection and victory over death at Eas- ter is all about God’s offer of rebirth and second chances. What part of your life is ready for a new and fresh start? Is this the time for that to happen? 3. Paul reminds his friends that “what I received, I passed on to you.” Who first told you the Easter story? How did that influ- ence your faith life? Have you thanked them? To whom have you “passed on” the Easter story? Who do you know that needs to hear it?

By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

Postlude Toccata in F C.M. Widor Easter Communion will be served in the Chapel immediately following the benediction. Gluten-free wafers are available. Today’s Music The music today features festive arrangements for brass, timpani, organ and piano. Richard Purvis (1913-1994) was Organist/Master of the Choristers at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco for many years. His jolly setting of the plainsong hymn Christ is Arisen is part of a five movement suite and delights in happy rhythms proclaiming the joy of Easter morning. The Easter Hymn, Christ the Lord is Risen Today, was authored by Charles Wesley (1707-1788) and is featured in over 1,000 hymnals. This brass/timpani arrangement is by Richard Webster and features a festive prelude and interlude preceding the final verse.

Philip Stopford (b. 1977) is a new composer crafting wonderful arrangements of great joy as befits this day. Our own John Cornelius has composed a new setting of a traditional spiritual (The Resurrection Morn) for male quartet specifically for today’s worship services. How fortunate we are to enjoy the many talents of this man.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a giant of his day. His funeral procession numbered over 20,000 people. He was a brilliant master of composition and, after going deaf, heard music only in his head. His Hallelujah is the conclusion of his Oratorio Christ On The Mount of Olives. Finally, Charles Marie Widor (1844-1937) wrote numerous organ works for including ten Symphonies, the most famous being this brilliant Toccata from his Fifth Symphony. He was appointed organist of Saint-Sulpice, the most prominent church in Paris, at the age of 25, and continued in that post for an astounding 63 years!

The Resurrection Morn’ is found in the oldest known collection of spirituals that dates from 1867. Transcribed in Charleston, South Carolina, this spiritual brings to life Mary’s discovery of the empty tomb. The recurring, excited refrain of ‘Run, Mary, Run’ sets the details into sharp relief by recounting, step-by-step, Mary’s

*The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;

who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried;

he descended into Hell; the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;

the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.

Amen.

experience and her reaction. This arrangement opens and closes with the joyous chorus and settles on a static harmony, in the middle, to specify Mary’s encounter. If the tune’s accompaniment seems jangly, well, imagine YOUR reaction to finding the Lord’s burial place bare!

May God be praised by our offerings on this most festive day! - John Gearhart
