Welcome to worship, thank you for joining us this morning.

Let’s sit back for a moment and consider how great God has been to our church family over the past few months! We’ve completed our renovations just in time for the beginning of Advent and we were able to worship in our Sanctuary throughout December.

But, the renovation wasn’t the end…rather, it is the means to a greater end as it marks the beginning of a new season of ministry for FPC-Kingwood! Our building is updated and beautiful, it gives us a facility from which we can actively serve God and others. But what about a renovation in service of something deeper?

As we enter 2020, let’s consider what it might look like to undergo a renovation of the heart. Maybe, as individuals, our spiritual foundation has shifted over time and God is asking us to consider who we are as his children. Maybe, as a community, God is calling us to consider our purpose and reason for being the church. We exist as disciples and as a church at this particular time for a particular reason…let’s see if we can discern that together!

Over the past 7 months, our session has been hard at work crafting a set of values that will serve as the foundation for this spiritual renovation. Over the next few weeks we will look at the ways these values will guide us in becoming the disciples and the church God is calling us to be.

Welcome to a new year, a new decade, and a new season of ministry at First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood!

Grace and Peace,Rev. Chad A. Erb

Students are encouraged to interact with the text and bring their own observations and experiences into the Biblical conversation.

Adult Ministry Sisters in Christ meets Saturdays from 9:30-11:30am in the Conference Room. This year we have been using a video + homework based program called “Anointed-Transformed-Redeemed, a Study of David”, by Priscilla Shirer, Beth Moore, & Kay Arthur. Wednesday Morning Footsteps will resume its study The Challenges of Womanhood I on Wednesday, January 8, 2020. The lessons are formulated so that they build on a theme, but can also stand on their own – allowing anyone to join in at any time. Join us for fellowship, mission adventures, small group Bible study and life application. Footsteps meets Wednesdays from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m., January 8 – April 29. Books are available for $21.00. Beginning January 13, Monday Footsteps will be starting a new study called “Women of the Word” by Jen Wilkin and will meet from 9:30-11:00am. We will learn how to study the Bible with our hearts and with our minds. This study will help you to have a clear and concise plan to keep your focus and sustain your passion when reading the Bible. We are hoping to have many who are new to Bible Study join us. This will be a 10-session study ending on April 6 due to many school holidays. Childcare will be provided and we want to have enough books for everyone! So please contact Dot Chapman at 281.414.2769 if you are interested.

New Square 1 Class Starts January 16! Join us for Daniel: The Writing on the Wall, starting January 16. What faith practices will help us live in an age of technological idols? How can we seek out the same God who enabled Daniel to read the writing on the wall? Join us Thursday nights at 7-8:30pm in Fellowship Hall, as we look at this pivotal book of the Bible. All are welcome, childcare available. For more info, contact Karen Gee ([email protected]) or David Epstein ([email protected]).

Giving Made Easier Grace and generosity come to us through our Lord Jesus. He set aside his infinite riches and was born into the lowest circumstance. Through his humble poverty, we gain great riches (2 Corinthians 8:9). In response to unconditional love, we offer ourselves to the Lord through his tithes and our offerings. We may certainly respond to the Lord by putting a check or cash in the plate when it’s passed. You may also respond through technology by utilizing the giving page on our website. Scanning this QR symbol with your phone will grant quick access to the page where you can schedule regular giving back to God. Let us give joyfully and from the heart as the Lord has given to us.

Children’s Ministry Kids’ Church is a worship-time experience for children coordinated with the teaching of worship in the Sanctuary. Offered at 9:35 and 11:05am services, Kids’ Church is for children 4 years through 3rd grade, following the children’s message. Parents of first-time participants should accompany their children to the Narthex for check-in.

Children’s Choir, Ignition and Accelerate will be on holiday break through January 8. All three ministries resume on Wednesday, Jan. 15.

We have a Parent Portal for Children’s Ministry! Check out www.fpc-kids.com for all the info parents need. Find out what Bible story was taught in Sunday school, look up the Ignition weekly challenge, find out where choir kids meet when they sing in worship. A quick and easy way to keep up with all the content of Children’s Ministry. PLUS, a feature called “Building Faith at Home” that offers ideas and suggests resources to help nurture your child’s faith.

PREPARING TO HEAR GOD’S WORDPrelude Sleep, Sleep, Sleep Austrian carol, arr. C. Davis

Welcome

Call to Worship (based on Isaiah 43) L: The Lord is about to do a new thing. P: It springs forth, do we not perceive it? L: The Lord will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. P: We will honor God and declare his praise.

*Hymn #140 We Three Kings of Orient Are KINGS OF ORIENT

*Prayer of Confession Almighty and merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you and one another by both our actions and our inactions. We recognize that in Jesus our light has come, and yet we often choose to walk in the shadows and ignore the light. We disregard our neighbor. We insist that our own way is right. Gracious God, forgive our sins. Free us from this bondage.

*Silent Confession

*Assurance of Pardon L: God does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far he removes our transgressions from us. P: Thanks be to God! *Gloria Patri (Words on Screens)

*Passing the Peace L: The peace of the Lord be with all of you. P: And also with you.

L: Lift up your hearts. P: We lift them up to the Lord. L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

A Communion Prayer (In Unison) Merciful Lord, we do not presume to come to this thy table trusting in our own righteousness. Rather we trust in your bountiful grace. We are not worthy to partake at this table, but you bid us come. Grant us to eat and drink so as to discern the body of Christ broken for us and the blood of Christ shed for us. Then may we rise from this table to live in such a way that we continue to dwell in Christ and he in us both now and forevermore. Amen.
