Simple Present Present Continuous Tense

Tenses

1. Simple Present TenseFunction

1. Expressing habitual action

Example :

Rudi eats with right hand.

(Rudi makan menggunakan tangan kanan).

2. Fact and general truth

Example :

The sun rises in the east.

(Matahari terbit di sebelah timur).

3. Fixed future event

Example:

My father plays football twice a week.

(Ayah saya bermain sepak bola dua kali seminggu).

Pattern :

verbal word (kata kerja berupa verb)

(+) Subject + Predicate (V1)s/es + Object/Comp.(-) Subject + do/does + not + V1 + Object/Comp.(?) Do/Does + Subject + V1 + Object/Comp.

Adverb of time simple present tense : Always Usually Often Sometimes Seldom Rerely Never Everyday Form time to time Occasionally Frequently

For the give s/es the word of v1 to subject the third person (She, He, It).

Nominal word (kata kerja berupa to be)

Example :

Verbal word

(+) She goes to school every morning.

(-) She does not (doesn’t) go to school every morning.

(?) Does she go to school every morning?

Yes, she does.

No, she does not (doesn’t)

Nominal word

(+) My father is busy now.

(-) My father is not busy now.

(?) Is your father busy now?

Yes, he is.

2. Present Continuous TenseFunction

1. Expressing activity in the progress at the moment of the speaking

Example :

We are studying biology.

(Saya sedang belajar biologi).

2. Telling the activities to temporal time

Example:

I am taking five subjects this semester.

(Saya sedang mengikuti lima mata kuliah semester ini).

3. Telling future event

Example : We are leaving for Jember in a few minutes.

(Kita akan meninggalkan Jember dalam beberapa menit). We are going home in a few hour.

(Kita akan pulang ke rumah dalam beberapa jam lagi).

Pattern :

(+) Subj+ Predicate (am, is, are + V.ing) + Obj/Comp.(-) Subj + (am, is, are)+ not + V.ing + Obj/Comp.(?) Subj + (am, is, are) + V.ing + Obj/Comp.

Adverb of time present continous tense : Now Right now At the moment Today

Expressions with this : This morning , this quater, this semester, etc.

Example :

(+) I am studying English at an English Course this year.

(-) I am not studying English at an English Course this year.

(?) Are you studying English at an English Course this year.

Yes, I am.

No, I am not.

Time marker (keterangan waktu): now, right now, today, at this

moment/week/month/year, at present, etc.
