Basic Description

Page 3: Presentation (for web site) - British Columbia€¦ · – Shows how selected sample parameter results (e.g. nitrate-nitrogen) have changed over time. • Exceedance graph – Shows

3

What is EMS?

• Environmental Monitoring System

• A database for information on environmental observations and measurements– Monitoring Locations - 24,096– Samples - 768,030– Analytical Results - 4,067,777

Page 4: Presentation (for web site) - British Columbia€¦ · – Shows how selected sample parameter results (e.g. nitrate-nitrogen) have changed over time. • Exceedance graph – Shows

4

What’s in EMS?

• Environmental monitoring data:– Ambient air, water, sediment, biological samples– Effluent discharge, air emission, solid wastes– Drinking water (potential)

• Analytical results include:– Physical / chemical– Bacteriological– Taxonomy– Quality assurance

Page 5: Presentation (for web site) - British Columbia€¦ · – Shows how selected sample parameter results (e.g. nitrate-nitrogen) have changed over time. • Exceedance graph – Shows

5

What is an EMS monitoring location?

• An EMS monitoring location must be identified before data can be entered & permanently stored

• Each EMS monitoring location has a unique ID

• Each location is geo-referenced

• Examples:– Stream or lake sampling location– Drinking water intake or distribution point– Water well– Effluent discharge pipe

Current EMS data access

• Direct access to EMS limited to Ministry staff (requires userid and password)

• Requests from permittees & general public routed through EMS Helpdesk

• Public requests are subject to a processing fee

• No web access

What is EMS WR?

• EMS Web Reporting

• Provides access to EMS data over the web– logon page is at:http://srmapps.gov.bc.ca/apps/ems/emsLogin.do

• Powerful and user-friendly “front end” to EMS database

• Users can view data online, download data retrievals, or download “canned” reports

Future enhancements to EMS and EMS WR

• Internet mapping tools to display EMS locations spatially & link to EMS WR– e.g., water wells, PODs, aquifers, community

watersheds

• Cross-referencing EMS with other databases

13

Benefits of EMS to HAs & purveyors

• Centralized provincial data repository

• Professionally maintained & updated

• Secure against unauthorized access

• Routine backups

• Electronic format for easy access & retrieval

• QA/QC function assured

• Flexible reporting format & content

• Opportunity to access additional spatial information (e.g.,

water wells, aquifers, POD’s, community watersheds)

• Does not interfere with reporting relationships between

health authority & purveyor

Data retrievals vs predefined reports

• Data retrievals– Suitable for routine and specialized data requirements– Require Excel or Access skills to create customized

graphs/reports– Highly flexible– Downloaded in Comma-Separated Value (CSV)

format • Predefined reports

– Designed for routine data requirements – Simple to create– Little flexibility– Downloaded in Portable Document Format (PDF)

42

Creating graphs

• Trend graph– Shows how selected sample parameter results (e.g.

nitrate-nitrogen) have changed over time.

• Exceedance graph– Shows how sample parameter results for a particular

sample compare to the Canadian Drinking Water Guideline.

Page 43: Presentation (for web site) - British Columbia€¦ · – Shows how selected sample parameter results (e.g. nitrate-nitrogen) have changed over time. • Exceedance graph – Shows

43

Trend graph

• The Trend Graph allows you to see how the level of a single parameter has changed over time at a single monitoring location. You can choose to graph all historical samples in EMS for a parameter, or you can specify the time period you want to graph.

• EMSWR automatically inserts the Canadian Drinking Water Guideline (CDWG) limit for the selected parameter into the graph as a red horizontal line. This enables you to quickly assess the parameter’s trend over time and against the CDWG limit.

Page 44: Presentation (for web site) - British Columbia€¦ · – Shows how selected sample parameter results (e.g. nitrate-nitrogen) have changed over time. • Exceedance graph – Shows

44

Trend graph example

• The EMS WR trend graph is currently disabled, but is expected to look like this:

45

Exceedance graph

• An exceedance graph enables you to determine, at a glance, whether the results of a water sample from a single monitoring location complies with the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines (CDWG).

Page 48: Presentation (for web site) - British Columbia€¦ · – Shows how selected sample parameter results (e.g. nitrate-nitrogen) have changed over time. • Exceedance graph – Shows

Example of an exceedance

• This exceedance graph show sodium & lead totals for a sample, and compare them to CDWG limits

49

More on exceedance graphs

• The exceedance graph for pH is slightly different from the graphs of other parameter results. Rather than having a CDWG limit, it displays an acceptable pH range (i.e. 6.5 to 8.5 pH units)
