What is EMS?

• Environmental Monitoring System

• A database for information on environmental observations and measurements– Monitoring Locations - 24,096– Samples - 768,030– Analytical Results - 4,067,777

What’s in EMS?

• Environmental monitoring data:– Ambient air, water, sediment, biological samples– Effluent discharge, air emission, solid wastes– Drinking water (potential)

• Analytical results include:– Physical / chemical– Bacteriological– Taxonomy– Quality assurance

What is an EMS monitoring location?

• An EMS monitoring location must be identified before data can be entered & permanently stored

• Each EMS monitoring location has a unique ID

• Each location is geo-referenced

• Examples:– Stream or lake sampling location– Drinking water intake or distribution point– Water well– Effluent discharge pipe

Current EMS data access

• Direct access to EMS limited to Ministry staff (requires userid and password)

• Requests from permittees & general public routed through EMS Helpdesk

• Public requests are subject to a processing fee

Getting data into EMS

• Set up a monitoring location– This will generate an EMS ID#

• Establish agreement with the analysing lab to upload test results to EMS

• Complete & submit necessary lab requisition & mandatory information

Submit a request through one of the following:

• Information required to establish an EMS monitoring location:

– Name of water source (e.g., Township of Langley Well No. 1)

Avoid using the Enter key after typing information into fields. Carry out actions by clicking an EMS WR button (e.g. search).

EMS WR – Logging out

• To log out of the system, click Log Off on the EMS WR menu bar

• Automatic timeout (log off) after 60 minutes if no user input; user will have to logon again.

Creating graphs

• Trend graph– Shows how selected sample parameter results (e.g.

nitrate-nitrogen) have changed over time.

• Exceedance graph– Shows how sample parameter results for a particular

sample compare to the Canadian Drinking Water Guideline.

Trend graph

• The Trend Graph allows you to see how the level of a single parameter has changed over time at a single monitoring location. You can choose to graph all historical samples in EMS for a parameter, or you can specify the time period you want to graph.

• EMSWR automatically inserts the Canadian Drinking Water Guideline (CDWG) limit for the selected parameter into the graph as a red horizontal line. This enables you to quickly assess the parameter’s trend over time and against the CDWG limit.

• An exceedance graph enables you to determine, at a glance, whether the results of a water sample from a single monitoring location complies with the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines (CDWG).

More on exceedance graphs

• The exceedance graph for pH is slightly different from the graphs of other parameter results. Rather than having a CDWG limit, it displays an acceptable pH range (i.e. 6.5 to 8.5 pH units)
