NEARLY THERE!!

With only three weeks left, teachers are madly marking

exams and writing reports to recognize all student’s

hard work and give advice on how to make next year

even better.

However, it is important for students to keep working

and not switch off. Normal rules and expectations

apply for the next three weeks. Teachers will still be

delivering engaging lessons and in many cases it is an

opportunity to deliver some of the more fun activities

that are not emphasised by the teaching syllabuses so

the final weeks can be very enjoyable.

PED/Social Media Policy.

Unfortunately there have been a few recent breaches of

the PED and Social Media policy that have resulted in

some serious consequences for a small number of

students. All students have been reminded of our cur-

rent expectations on two occasions last week and the

policy is included in this week’s newsletter for a further

reminder.

Next year we will be having a look at our PED policy, as

it is a number of years since it has been reviewed.

This does not mean it will change as any alterations to

this policy must be agreed by the student, parent and

teaching bodies of the school. In the meantime there

are two important issues to consider;

Our current policy will be implemented until any

changes are agreed

Our Social Media policy will NOT change.

As with all our policies and procedures I expect that the vast majority of students to continue to comply with our expectations and have no problems. The minority who ignore the rules will continue to be dealt with in line with the policy attached.

our traditional Talent Quest on the second last day.

PRESENTATION NIGHT Invitations are now being sent home with students. Academic awards will be finalised this week, and students will receive their invitations early next week. Year 10 End of Year Function

8th December 2016

This year marks the end of junior school for Year 10. As there is no formal certificate to mark the end of Year 10, there will be no formal assembly. We have however re-tained an official dinner to mark this milestone on Thursday 8th December (Week 9) and this will be followed by a so-cial.

The dinner is for Year 10 students and staff only.

The dress code is smart casual and parents and students are asked not to go to any large expense (at no stage have students been told that suits and formal dresses are necessary).

As this is a school event, all normal school rules apply.

The organization for the evening on the 8th December will be as follows…

5:30 pm sharp meet at Carrington Park for a group photo.

6:00 pm- 7:00 pm Dinner at the Blayney Community Centre

7:00 pm- 9:30pm Social at the High School

Note: Mr Connell will be available during the evening for individual and group photos.

The cost of the evening will be $35. This covers the meal, soft drinks, hall hire and decorations and must be paid to the Front Office by no later than Friday 2nd December (Week 8).

PED/Social Media Policy

PEDs – The Rule

Devices and associated peripherals such as earphones are to be out of sight during the school day – this includes recess and lunch unless their use is explicitly directed by a teacher for a classroom activity.

If this permission is given devices must only be used in that lesson and for strict educational purpose.

What if?

A teacher sees a student using a device without permission or in a manner other than directed.

1st Offence

The device will be confiscated, placed in a sealed envelope signed by the student and placed in the school safe.

The device will not be returned until a parent or caregiver has contacted the school.

(NOTE- This contact must be after school or the following day as otherwise a student has used another phone to make their parents aware of the confiscation. The school office phone will not be made available for students to ring their parents in this situation.)

2nd Offence

The device will be confiscated, placed in a sealed envelope signed by the student and placed in the school safe.

The device will not be returned until a parent or caregiver collects the device from the school.

A referral for repeated disobedience will be placed in Millennium.

A minimum of a Room 5 detention will be given depending on the circumstances of the incident.

3rd Offence (or more)

The device will be confiscated, placed in a sealed envelope signed by the student and placed in the school safe.

The device will not be returned until a parent or caregiver collects the device from the school.

A referral for repeated disobedience will be placed on Millennium.

A significant consequence will be imposed at this stage including the possibility of suspension depending on the circum-stances of the incident.

Any student who fails to surrender their device will be given a significant consequence including

suspension for disobedience.

PED/Social Media Policy

Social Media - The Rule

Students are expected to use Social Media responsibly and in a legal manner.

Students must not use Social Media at any time, to bully, harass, intimidate, insult or belittle any member of the school or wid-er community.

Students must not use Social Media to bring Blayney High School into disrepute either by their actions or words.

What if?

The school becomes aware of students posting images/video of themselves or friends acting in a socially responsible manner outside of school hours (Either in or out of school uniform)

This is not a breach of any school rule as it is clearly a positive use of Social Media

The school becomes aware a photo/video taken during school time has been posted to a Social Media site. The photo/video does NOT contain offensive, defamatory, threatening or illegal material.

This student has breached the PED policy as a PED has clearly been used to capture any image.

All students identified in the image will receive a minimum lunch procedural detention depending on the circumstances.

The student posting the image/video will be required to surrender their phone for 10 school days to the Front Office and will be able to collect it each afternoon.

The student responsible for capturing the image (if different from the student posting the image) will be required to surren-der their phone for 10 school days to the Front Office and will be able to collect it each afternoon.

The school becomes aware of students posting images/video of themselves or friends behaving offensively, threateningly or illegally outside of school hours but Blayney High School is not identifiable IN ANY WAY.

The school will contact the Police regarding the material seen but will impose no consequences. This is an out of school issue. However, should any incident occur at school by students as a result of such a post significant consequences will be imposed by the school including possible suspension depending on the circumstances.

The school becomes aware a photo/video has been posted to a Social Media site and Blayney High School has been identified through either image, written or spoken word or implication. The photo/video is deemed by the Principal to contain offensive, defamatory, threatening or illegal material.

This student has breached the Law

All students identified in the image will receive a significant consequence including a possible suspension depending on the circumstances.

The student posting the image/video will be required to surrender their phone for 20 school days to the Front Office and will be able to collect it each afternoon.

At Blayney High students are regularly reminded that spray on deodorants should not be bought to school. These can, and

have caused asthma attacks in students and staff including a serious incident in the past week.

I remind parents and students that if students bring deodorant to school it should be a roll on or stick style. If students use

spray on deodorant at school, particularly in an enclosed space they will be asked to stop and if necessary will have the item

confiscated.

Like all rules at Blayney High School if students comply with this simple procedure there will be no issue. However, if students

continue to use spray deodorants despite repeated warnings it will be treated as a discipline issue.

Naturally I would like to avoid this and stress again this policy is for health and safety of all staff and students.

I thank you in advance for your cooperation regarding this matter.
