Our Community has expressed interest in a summer enrichment program over the last five years.

A summer enrichment program provides unique opportunities to reinforce previously learned concepts in an exciting workshop format.

We conducted an interest survey during the month of January 2017.

After a year of researching the best Nassau County Summer Enrichment Programs, we have developed a plan for the children of Plainedge.

A BOCES organized and run enrichment program

Plainedge Staff and Students will receive priority for positions

Enrollment = 240 students

Cost = $500 for Plainedge students

$600 for Out-of-District students

We propose a Summer 2017 Pilot Enrichment Program structured as follows:

Half – Day program from 8:30-11:30

Monday - Thursday

July 10th – August 10th

5 week program = 20 days

Must enroll for 5 weeks

Transportation provided by parents

Hired Plainedge staff’s children are eligible to attend program at no cost

Registration fees from participating families will cover program costs

ART-MAZING

What is summer without creating art masterpieces? This class is filled with fun summer crafts: tie-dye, spin art, jewelry-making, painting, origami and MUCH MORE!! Creativity is the key to creating Art-Mazing pieces.

WORLD-CLASS CHEFS

Want to be the next Top Chef? Let’s take a trip around the world and discover the culinary delights from different countries. Explore the traditions and cultures of each country and how food is an integral part. Each week, students will prepare and sample recipes from various regions. Pack your suitcase…Bon Appétit!

THE ART OF SCIENCE

Explore science and biology through an artist’s lens. Students will create art projects based on plants, animals, microscopic imagery, crystals, minerals and anatomy. Students will learn about famous artists who use science and bio art as their inspiration. Students will use various artistic techniques to create a portfolio that will showcase their knowledge of science through art.

INTRODUCTION TO iMOVIE

Students will be introduced to the iMovie app. They will create professional quality movies, where they will incorporate transitions, music, and other artistic components, on the iPad. Students will produce trailers for their movies and become “Oscar nominated” directors in no time.

ROCKIN’ ROBOTICS

Are you interested in programming and engineering? Learn to program, design, build, and test your own robot in this exciting hands-on class. In this experience, you will get to program different types of robots and learn coding.

S.T.E.A.M.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics all come together in this fun interactive class. Students will apply 21st Century Skills to complete hands-on activities. Some of the projects can be and not limited to catapults, wind turbines, egg challenges, bridges, solar cars, and robots.

FITNESS FUN

Get fit with “Fitness Fun”! Students will be partaking in aerobics, Zumba, yoga, dance, tumbling, and other fitness activities.

PLAY BALL!

What’s your favorite sport? Wait…you don’t have one or you like a lot of sports…well, this class is for you. Students will play a variety of sports, such as baseball, tee-ball, kickball, football, basketball, and soccer. In this class, students will learn fundamental techniques and good sportsmanship qualities that are needed to be successful within each game.

STEP-IT UP

Have you always wanted to be on “So You Think You Can Dance”? Join this class and start dancing to the beat of your favorite summer songs. Learn traditional and new dance moves in difference styles of dance such as Jazz, Hip-Hop, Contemporary, Tap, and Step!

DIARY OF AN AWESOME KID

Do you have trouble putting down the books in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series? If so, sign up for this class. Students will create humorous and reflective pieces, scrapbook within their journal, and create time capsules. Students will transform their love of fiction by creating a diary that represents their individuality and creativity.

LITTLE AUTHORS’ CLUB

Have you ever dreamt of writing your own book? This summer become a member of the prestigious Little Authors’ Club. Students will write and illustrate their own fictional story books. Students will learn the rules of grammar, the mechanics of writing and the joys of creative storytelling.

MATH-Terpieces

Did you know that artists are also mathematicians? Take a second look at famous masterpieces, concepts of mathematics can be found in all of them. Learn art through a mathematician’s lens. Explore famous and historical paintings, buildings, and statues. Students will engage in art activities that incorporate math. We will be creating Color Wheel Clocks, a Geometric Picasso Head, Tesselations, Wheel of Pythagoras, exploring Circle Wheel Loom Weaving and so much more!
