Aphasia
Acquired language disorder in which there is an impairment of any language modality
Suggest total impairment of language
Causes: Lesions to language relevant areas (i.e. Broca’s area, Wernicke’s area) Damage can be caused by: Brain tumor, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Traumatic
Brain Injury, Epilepsy
There are many different types Example: Global Aphasia- severe communication abilities, extremely limited
in speaking and comprehending language
Treatment: No treatment proven to be effective for all types of aphasia

Dysphasia
Patient experiences an impairment of the power of speech
Causes: Damage to the Left area of the brain Examples: Stroke, Head Injury, Infection,
Inflammation

Monoplegia
A symptom not a disease
Paralysis of a single limb
Common Causes: Cerebral Palsy Stroke Brain tumor Nerve damage
Treatment: Depends on the underlying cause
Quadriplegia
Also known as Tetreplegia
Paralysis of all limbs and torso
Causes: Damage to the Brain Damage to Cervical Vertebrae
Symptoms Loss of functionality of limbs Loss of functionality of torso
Loss or No control in bowel and bladder, sexual function, digestion, breathing
Treatment Intensive Rehabilitation (though patient will only gain very little movement back)
Quadriplegia
Christopher Reeve
Became Quadriplegic after a horse riding accident
Regained slight movement are intensive therapy and rewiring nerve connections
