Are You Caught in the Draft? Countdown to the NFL Draft Chicago

    By: Ashmar Mandou

The NFL Draft is imminent. I don’t

know about you, but I can certainly feel the excitement across the city, it’s palpable. On Monday,

April 27th the 2015 NFL Draft will kick off a weeklong filled festivity from youth football clinics,

an interactive area for families, historic Bears memorabilia, and much more. The NFL Draft will go beyond the Auditorium Theatre by hosting an array of events planned for Draft week throughout the city, from hospitals to schools.

However, before the mayhem the NFL Draft will undoubtedly create, the NFL Draft will release a series called, “Caught in the Draft,” which returns for a second season, that will look back at five previous drafts: 1965,

1975, 1985, 1995, and 2005. The series will examine five drafts that had a profound impact on the National Football League and helped transform the NFL Draft. The season series kicks off this week

Cicero Finances Continue to Improve When Larry Dominick assumed the presidency of the Town of Cicero in 2005, the Town was saddled with outstanding indebtedness of $148.1 million, equal to a debt obligation of $1,765.68 per Cicero resident, according to the Town of Cicero Finance Department Director Don Schultz. At the end of 2014 President Dominick has reduced this debt by 42 percent, to $85.9 million, or $1,024.25 per Cicero resident. By the end of President Dominick’s present term in 2017, total outstanding debt will be reduced by 53.4 percent to $69 million, or $823.03 per resident. By the end of 2021, total indebtedness will be reduced by 78 percent to $32.4 million, or $386.69 per resident. “President Dominick’s charge has been clear: ‘do not spend money you do not have and do not straddle future generations with present day debt’,” Schultz said. Since 2005

and the administration of Larry Dominick, the Town of Cicero has not incurred any long term

outstanding debt, but has instead worked to reduce and carefully eliminate the indebtedness incurred

by prior administrations and to provide necessary and current services with available resources. Dominick expanded services without raising taxes by implementing sound financial strategies. As a result, Cicero has received top national honors in financial reporting procedures five-years in a row from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). Under Dominick, Cicero maintains a strong A-Plus (A+) rating from Standard & Poors.

House on Mango Street Opens at National Museum of Mexican Art By: Ashmar Mandou

Scores of people lined up to meet award-winning novelist and Chicago-native Sandra Cisneros on Friday, April 17th as the doors of the National Museum of Mexican Art in the Pilsen neighborhood opened to showcase its latest exhibition, The House on Mango Street: Artists Interpret Community. It was the first time Cisneros as worked with an art organization to bring her acclaimed hit to life. “I would not be here if it hadn’t been for public institutions like the museum and like the library. We need art to nourish our heart if we’re afraid, or if we’re angry, or if we’re moving through situations that are violent and destroying our spirit. Art is a way of transforming that darkness and composting it into light.” said Sandra

Cisneros. The House on Mango Street: Artists Interpret Community is now open to the general public and will run through August 23rd. Admission is free.

The House on Mango Street: Artists Interpret Community includes works from 55 contemporary artists displaying their interpretation of the novel by using various mediums. For more information, visit www.NMMArt.org. House of Mango

The House on Mango Street: Artists Interpret Community. Dijo Sandra Cisneros. The House on Mango Street: Artists Interpret Community está abierta al público en general hasta el 23 de agosto. La admisión es gratuita. The House on Mango Street: Artists Interpret Community incluye obras de 55 artistas contemporáneos, mostrando su interpretación de la novela utilizando varios medios.
