A Heart for the Arts

I have a confession. I’ve never liked the movie, A Christmas Story. I find it cynical and dark, at a time of the year when I want light-hearted and joyful. While I recognize why others love it, the clicker clicks on by when it pops up on tv a hundred times. But the musical is a different story entirely.. Although it’s the same plot-line, this stage version

finds focus in the warmth of family despite parental

flaws and foibles. The backdrop is humor, always,

mostly about the “Old Man’s” shortcomings, but he

turns out to be the hero, which alleviates whatever

tension we have been feeling about a weak father. He’s

not, after all. In fact, he’s surprisingly intuitive about

his kids, and Ralphie’s feelings especially, despite the

previously consistent tone of stress and personal

goofiness.

And how about the Mom? Isn’t she wise, all-

knowing about her family, and constantly in-

charge? Exactly how I am at any moment of any day

in my family! Ask anyone who knows me! HA!

Page 12: Presented by - The Foundation of Arts · Katrina Menard Choreography Abi Mason & Cari Pulliam Book By Joseph Robinette Music & Lyrics by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul Hans Hacker Kade

But the most wonderful aspect of this version is

that the script gave us opportunity to include Ralphie’s

community as an ever-present and powerful force for

his growth and encouragement. Even if everyone is

telling him, “you’ll shoot your eye out!”. We all get a

sense that they are constantly present in the family’s

life, supporting each other in a no-nonsense way, all the

while, helping in whatever way they can. Community

is so important.

I love stories in which we are reminded that, despite our secret doubts, eventually we realize that someone was listening to us. Whether it was Mom, Dad, our neighbor, our worst enemy, or God (always God), - we were heard.

This cast has been helpful to each other, graceful

with me, hard-working, and completely loveable. And I

adore them. It takes a lot of work to look this fun. And

my prayer is that the job well-done and the community

they’ve found in the process has made it all worth it.

Please consider giving to the FOA this season. The programming needs your support to be maintained and even grow. We want to provide arts experiences like this one to more people in our community.

With a Heart for the Arts,

Kristi

Support The Foundation of Arts because we…

• Believe that engaging in the arts grows people and unites community

• Help people, and each other, learn discipline, teamwork, creativity, and focus through arts experiences - which arms them for success in any field

• Provide disciplined creative arts study and experiences trying our

best to enable everyone to learn, regardless of their ability to pay

• Are a place for children and adults to participate in goal-oriented arts-study, in a non-competitive and technique-based environment

• Serve at least 500 families per week through arts education, theatre,

and outreach activities

• Offer community theatre with ten different productions per year including The Nutcracker Ballet, musical theatre, and children’s theatre

• Stand alone as an arts organization in Northeast Arkansas that

provides live theatre at relatively low ticket prices for thousands of patrons each year—and a Pay What You Can performance for each show so that everyone can grow from live theatre

• Work with adults and children with disabilities through the arts, allowing them the opportunity to perform annually on stage

• Bring an annual count of 55,000 trips into downtown Jonesboro for

our community

• Need your support—ticket sales and class tuition support only about half of what it takes to serve Northeast Arkansas and the more than 20,000 people we positively affect annually

• ARE YOUR COMMUNITY

Few things make us happier than seeing an artist achieve something beautiful that they have been striving to learn. It grows them for a brighter future.

More than 400 students come to class because of a tuition waiver program.

They pirouette, sing, & paint together, without concern

for their race or their family’s income, religion, or

political affiliation.

At least 450 actors, dancers, & technicians will grow each year from creating theatre as volunteers, and over 2,000 students will experience quality theater at a free or reduced ticket price through Education Enrichment Series outreach program for area students.

THANK YOU For showing interest, in some way, in the FOA.

If you give, please consider the FOA with a gift this season. We can sell tickets, but the thousands of people whose

lives are changed because of our outreach programming are only touched because people like you

support it.

Without you, the FOA can’t continue to have the impact it has on our community.
