Introduction to Feng Shui Case Study 4

This class illustrates four sentences from Xuan Kong Secret Decree,1 an old Chinese

    memorization poem about Feng Shui.

Xuan Kong is our style of Flying Star Feng Shui.

The information in this poem is secret because unless you had someone

explain the sentences to you, you will not be able to understand them.

Decree or proclamation means a powerful order from an authority.

This name implies the book contains powerful formulas that will have strong effects.

Xuan Kong Secret Decree is attributed to Wu Jingluan (吳景鸞) of the Song dynasty

and was passed along by Shen Zhureng (沈竹礽) in his late Qing dynasty book,

    Master Shen’s Xuan Kong Studies.2

The Chinese frequently summarized specialized learning into this type of poem or

song. It made it easier to remember the information, but also encoded it, to help keep

family or lineage secrets. The sentences in a poem like this are brief, cryptic, and have

images to remind you of the information but do not explain every detail.

Some of the sentences in these memorization poems refer to things that are less

relevant in modern construction or modern society, for example the placing of the

well or the outhouse. But many of the sentences are quite relevant today. Master Sang

has chosen four sentences for this class that may be useful in your Feng Shui practice.

There are four different case studies in this class. Two involve the sentences from

Xuan Kong Secret Decree, and all four illustrate useful Feng Shui principles.

    The Nine Flying Stars

The Nine Flying Stars have a number of associations. These associations are

important for a full understanding of the significance of the nine flying stars. In

addition, memorization poems such as Xuan Kong Secret Decree often use the trigram

name, the color, or the associated star when referring to the flying stars, so we need to

know these to decode the old poems.

The Associations of the Nine Flying Stars

    Flying Star Associated

5 yellow none earth center 廉真 lian zhen

6 white qian metal northwest 武曲 wu qu

7 red dui metal west 破軍 po jun

8 white gen earth northeast 佐輔 zuo fu

9 purple li fire south 右弼 you bi

For example, one of the sentences below refers to Po Jun. This actually means the 7

red star. Another refers to Tan Lang (1 white) and Wen Qu (4 Green).

Besides this, there are other code words. As you know, there are twelve animals,

which are popularly associated with a twelve year cycle. The twelve animals have

other associations beyond the twelve years. Their primary correspondence is with the

twelve earthly branches. The branches may be applied to many things, both related to

time and to space (see the Stems and Branches Class for details). The twelve animals,

through the twelve branches, may be associated with the months, days, hours, and

    even the directions.

One of the sentences from Xuan Kong Secret Decree in this class refers to “rooster

and rat.” Rat is associated with the zi branch, which falls in the north. Therefore, it

goes with 1 white, kan. Rooster belongs to the you branch, west, and therefore 7 red.

We can also associate the rabbit with mao, east, and 3 jade; and the horse with li,

    south, and 9 red.

These associations of the nine flying stars are discussed in detail in the Feng Shui

    Case Study 6 class.

Because of all the extended associations and the terse language, only someone who

has studied very hard and has a teacher can understand the meaning of the sentences

from the memorization poems. However, once you understand the meaning, reciting

the sentence can recall the information.

Note on the effect of different areas of a house

The center gives a potential. The potential may remain hidden and unexpressed if

other circumstances do not trigger it. For example, a negative potential may not

manifest if the house is wang shan wang shui, with a good entrance and bedroom and

no sha. But if it is in a reverse house and has environmental sha, the bad potential may

    come out.

Think of this like someone who has a family history of heart disease. It is likely that if

this person has an improper diet and lifestyle, he too will end up with heart disease.

However, if he has a careful diet, regular exercise, reduces his stress, and doesn’t

smoke, there is a good chance he can live a healthy life. This person has a great

potential for heart disease, but it doesn’t need to manifest if the circumstances are

good. This is just like the potential of the house.

The entrance, as the “qi mouth,” (氣口) receives qi from the outside and brings it

into the house. Thus it is a very important area. The qi that comes in any door that is

used is likely to be expressed and affects everyone in the house, whether or not they

    use this particular entrance.

You can compare this to the food going in your own mouth. The nutrition (good or

bad) will affect every part of your body. Like this, the stars at the qi mouth affect the

    whole house.

The sitting and facing affect everyone in the house for people and money issues

respectively. The qi in these sections is likely to be expressed.

The bedroom influences only the person who sleeps there. The qi in the bedroom is

    likely to be expressed.

When we say, the “qi is likely to be expressed,” this means you can predict the results

of the flying stars in the section. For example, if 1-4 is in a bedroom, the person who

sleeps there is likely to absorb the peach blossom qi, and peach blossom will usually

manifest in his or her life.

The Problem: This is a real estate mortgage broker’s office. There was a disharmony

between the owner and the employees: the employees tended to dominate the boss.

The original set-up is shown in the floor plan above. The boss sits at his desk in the

back, facing all the employees, who sit near the front of the office. This looks like a

traditional schoolroom, with one teacher and many students.

The building is wang shan wang shui, so it should bring benefit to the owner. Why

    does this problem occur?

The desks are set up so that the employees all face the boss, like many against one. He

wants to watch over them but they are all watching him with bad feelings. There are

many employees and only one owner, so their hostile qi overpowers him.

Besides this, the owner’s desk is directly lined up with the door. Between the door and

the employees, the qi directed at the boss is overwhelming.

The entrance is in the east, with a 2-7 combination. 7 red is on money side at the

entrance. It was wang at the time (this reading was done during Period 7), so it was

beneficial for money. However, 7 red can also bring fighting and arguments. This is

because 7 red is associated with Po Jun, a breaking and fighting star. The qi of the 2-7

entrance (qi mouth) directly hits the boss since he is in line with it. The qi from the

door should not hit the boss (or anyone else) directly. This is true whether the door has

good or bad qi. But when the qi of the door has a negative aspect, this is what is most

likely to manifest under such circumstances.

The boss sits at his desk in the 7-3 space. A 7-3 combination brings betrayal,

arguments, and similar disharmonies. Here, the metal of the 7 red Po Jun star

dominates the wood of 3 jade. The 7-3 is one of the reasons these employees do not

    get along with their boss.

Notes: The 7-3 brings trouble even during Period 7 when 7 red was wang. It is worse

now in Period 8 because 7 red is old, in decline.

The possibility of betrayal from a 7-3 combination is even worse in a reverse house.

3-7, 7-3, 4-7, or 7-4 can all cause betrayal. In all of these, the metal of the 7 red Po

Jun star dominates wood. The combinations involving 3 jade are probably worse for

betrayal, as 3 jade is associated with gossip, arguments, and lawsuits, while 4 green is

    not.

  • © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute Feng Shui Case Study 4 13

Below is the revised floor plan. The 8-4 in the northwest is the best combination for

the boss. 8 white is a good star and it was very strong during Period 7. 8-4 is good for

people because the 8 white is on the people side. This gives the boss power. Therefore

we move his desk into the northwest.

Also, the northwest (qian section) is good for the boss since qian personifies the father,

    the president, the male owner.

The 3-8 combination in the southwest could also be beneficial, but the boss reported

that his money situation is already good. Here, the 8 white is on the right, the money

side. The owner’s problem is with the employees, the people. It is not a money issue.

In addition, the southwest is the kun section, with no particular advantage for a male

    owner.

If either section (8-4 or 3-8) is used, some fire remedy is needed, something red to

reduce the domination of earth (8 white) by wood (3 jade or 4 green).

Note: For a female owner, you can increase her power by placing her in the kun

southwest direction as kun personifies the mother or the female owner. You can also

place a person in the area of his or her personal trigram to enhance their strength. For

example, put a xun person in the southeast. However, the stars in that section must

also be beneficial. Don’t do it if bad stars occupy that section.

Put the boss on a slightly elevated platform (2-3 inches higher than the rest of the

floor) so he sits a little above his employees. This gives him more authority.

The owner’s desk is now at an angle so he can still easily watch all his employees.

  • © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute Feng Shui Case Study 4 15

The corner behind the boss’s back must be filled in. An empty corner behind your

back makes the qi curl and eddy behind you. This is disruptive. You can build a wall

or shelves to fill out the corner, but the shelves should be full, not just a bunch of

    knickknacks.

Shelves like this do not fill in the space sufficiently.

This is better, but may not be tall enough.

A plant can also serve this function.

In this reading, the door cannot be moved from the 2-7 section in the east. In any case,

moving the door would also make it harder to set up the employees’ desks without

having them aligned with the door.

Put metal at the entrance to reduce the earth of 2 black, but not too much metal. If

there is too much metal, it will trigger the fighting again because it increases 7 red Po

    Jun’s strength.

In this way, we have now reduced the tension between the boss and the employees

without reducing any of the money qi for this business.

Sharp angles are considered metal sha and relate to 7 red Po Jun. They are especially

bad if you are in the southeast (xun, wood) and the angles are pointing at you from the

northwest (qian, metal). This makes strong metal chopping wood.

    Xun (Southeast sitting) house

    reverse house

This is a reverse house. A reverse house with a bad environment intensifies problems

brought on by bad star combinations, especially when the nature of environmental sha

adds to a domination in the flying stars.

    破軍居巽位,顛疾瘋狂。《玄空秘旨》

When Po Jun resides in the Xun position, there is craziness, sickness, madness, and

hysteria. (from Xuan Kong Secret Decree)

The “Xun position” means the southeast, which is the home position of Xun (4 green).

Po Jun is associated with 7 red. So, for this sentence to be fulfilled, you need to have

    7 red in the southeast.

In this house we have 7 red in the southeast (Xun) section, so it is easy for mental

problems to occur. But for it to actually manifest, there must be additional negativity.

It is unlikely to occur in a Wang Shan Wang Shui or a double sitting house. Even a

double facing house probably won’t have this effect. However, 7 red in the southeast

of a reverse house, or with sharp angles (metal sha) can drive people crazy.

  • © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute Feng Shui Case Study 4 20

This sentence can also be fulfilled if a master bedroom door opens to the southeast

and faces any angle sha (metal sha).

The angle sha must come from outside the house or outside the room that is being

affected. This picture shows a master bedroom in the southeast with metal sha (a

sharp corner) outside the door. The metal sha is the equivalent of 7 red Po Jun.

In this floor plan, note the angle outside the door to Bedroom 5.

    Xun (Southeast sitting) house

    reverse house

In the reverse house of this case study, 5-7 is in the xun section (southeast). The 5

yellow represents sickness. The 7 red is Po Jun in the Xun position. The house is also

hit by corners (angle sha) from the building diagonally across the street.

The house in our case study is sitting in the xun southeast direction, so it can easily

affect any or all of the people in the house. If it were not in the sitting section, it

would just affect the people living in that section. This house is not only sitting

somewhere in the xun southeast 45° section, it is sitting in the specific 15 degrees associated with xun (letter J on the luopan). If the house sat in either of the other two

15° sections of the southeast (I or K), it would still have an affect, although perhaps not as strong.

Another existing sha in the house is a spiral staircase that comes down from the

second floor into the southeast sitting with the 5-7 combination.

  • © 2009 American Feng Shui Institute Feng Shui Case Study 4 22

6 white in the southeast (xun) can also cause the same type of problem, or a 7-4 or 4-7

combination in some other section, if the circumstances are right. The main thing is

that xun (or 4 green) is strongly dominated by metal. Xun is wind and wood. Xun

represents the mind, and can be flexible when it is happy (like a tree that can bend

with the wind) or it can become chaotic and unstable under bad circumstances (like

    wind blowing every which way).

Besides this, the northwest facing section has 7-9 which means too much celebration.

7-9 likes to go out and spend time in places like nightclubs. This led to the husband’s

    affair.

7 red is Dui, a young female, entertainment, love, the mouth.

The west, the home of Dui and 7 red, corresponds to the you branch, one of the

four main directions. All four of the main directions are associated with peach

    blossom.

9 purple is li gua, happiness and celebration, brightness, and it enhances

    whatever it is with.

The south, the home of 9 purple and li, is wu branch, also a main direction, peach

    blossom.

Therefore, the 7-9 combination means peach blossom for a man because the fire of li

dominates the metal of dui, the young girl. When 5 yellow enters, for example as an

annual star, it is easy to catch a sexually transmitted disease.

    Remedies:

It is best for the family to move as the angle sha of the larger building is really

overwhelming and cannot be changed. Also, a remedied reverse house, while

less harmful, is not really good. But if moving is not possible right away, then

the owner should make the following remedies in the meantime:

Fix the reverse house (mountain in front, water in back).

Put water in the southeast to heal the 4-7 clash. Water reduces the metal of 7 red

and feeds 4 green, xun wood.

Put water outside the house between the angle sha and the house. Water reduces

the metal of the angle sha.

Instead, you could cover or soften the angle sha. For example, you could plant a

big tree between the sha and the house.

Conclusion: Be careful of combinations of xun (southeast or 4 green star) and Po Jun

(metal sha, 7 red, or sometimes even 6 white) in a reverse house with environmental

sha or bad stars such as 5 yellow. The problems can also occur in a house that is

double facing (bad for people) or locked for people. If the wrong combination of the

above factors occurs, mental illness can ensue.

    (from Xuan Kong Secret Decree)

Rooster is associated with the you branch, dui gua, the west, and 7 red. Rat means the

zi branch, kan gua, the north, and 1 white. So this sentence is referring to a 1-7 or 7-1

combination. In this picture, the staircase descends from 1-7 in the southeast section.

This sentence requires a 1-7 or 7-1 combination with land sloping down from that

section. The result will be that the residents tend to be away from home all the time.

people who reside in that particular space.

    雞交鼠而傾瀉,必犯徙流。《玄空秘旨》

When rooster meets rat and there is a decline, it will certainly offend, causing exile.

    (from Xuan Kong Secret Decree)

Always being out and away from home was considered bad in the old days, but today

some people like to travel a lot. In fact, the use of the word “exile” in this sentence

implies that the person will do something wrong and be exiled as punishment.

However, the circumstances may not be so severe.

A 7-9 combination will always make the people be out of the house too, but with a

7-9, they are out having fun. With a 1-7, the person has to go out to make a living.

    ***

There are additional sentences that discuss the 1-7 or 7-1 combination:

    金水多情,貪花戀酒。《玄空秘旨》

When gold (metal) and water have a lot of passion, the greedy flower loves alcohol.

    (from Xuan Kong Secret Decree)

Gold or metal refers again to 7 red, dui gua, you branch, the west.

Water refers to 1 white, kan, Tan Lang, zi branch, the north.

Zi (north) and you (west), both main directions, are associated with peach blossom.

Flower implies beauty, putting on make-up, and dressing up in fancy clothes.

The qi of 1-7 causes people to dress up and drink a lot. 1-7 loves to drink alcohol,

loves to look pretty, and loves to be admired. The person will tend to look younger

and fresher, too. They like to wear make-up. Both sexes can be affected. Even a male

may become a “dandy,” or what today is called a metrosexual.3

However, people affected by a 1-7 or 7-1 are less likely to act on the peach blossom

than those affected by a 1-4 or a 7-9. “Look but don’t touch.”

3 A metrosexual is a heterosexual male who has a strong aesthetic sense and inordinate interest in appearance and style, similar to that of homosexual males. This is according to dictionary.com.

1-4 is pretty, spiritual, creative, elegant, classy, and doesn’t drink as much as 1-7. In

this house, 4-4 is in the kan sitting section (north, home of 1 white) so there is also 1-4

    qi here.

The 4-4 in the facing of a house (not present in this example) signifies making money

through creativity, and also having a good name.

4-4 in the sitting of a house (as in this case) means the people are very spiritual. They

are also good looking and tend toward peach blossom.

When Po [Jun] approaches Wen [Qu] and Tan [Lang], it is the root of being pretty,

soft, and gentle. (from Xuan Kong Secret Decree)

A person affected by 7 red (Po Jun) with 4 green (Wen Qu) or 1 white (Tan Lang)

likes to dress up and be pretty. It makes one very gentle or feminine. This affects

    males as well as females.

For this combination to have effect, it must be in the entrance or bedroom. This

sentence refers to star combinations such as 7-1, 7-1, 4-7, or 7-4.

This is another case where the money is okay but there are problems involving the

‘people’ aspect. The house is double facing, so it is not supportive of the people. If

possible, place a mountain in front.

The stars in the sitting section also affect the people as a whole. Here, the

combination is not very good. 5-3 is a domination involving two stars that are not

beneficial, so they do not bring any good results. The 5 yellow is on the people side

and is dominated by the 3 jade, so it is very unhappy. Not only is this the sitting, but

Move the desk from the 5-3 in the north to 1-7 in the northwest. The desk is angled to

give him a better position in the room, but the corner behind the desk is filled in, as

    discussed above.

The secretary was in the 2-6 (west) or 6-2 (southwest). Place the secretary in the south

4-4 section (good for writing) since she writes for him.

Note: If possible avoid fire or water in the west or northwest (metal directions)

because these elements dominate or reduce the metal of these directions. It is better if

remedies don’t dominate or reduce the element of the direction in which they are

    placed.

Of course, this can not always be avoided. If you have a 2-5 in the east or southwest

(wood directions), you cannot avoid using metal.

    Conclusion

Each of Master Sang’s case studies classes adds important details that can be applied

in real feng shui readings. While feng shui must be adapted for the modern lifestyle

and current architecture, the ancient knowledge can often be applied.
