EVEN THE CRITICS HAVE TO TAKE A PEEK. THE ANNUAL FLEET RANKINGS FEATURE THE LARGEST COMPANIES THAT KEEP THEMSELVES ON THE INDUSTRY MAP.

As part of our annual fl eet list ritual, let’s be clear up front, once again: Largest does not mean best or top.

The annual LCT Largest 100 Fleets List in no way implies that companies with larger fl eets provide better customer service, ac-complish higher profi t margins, or display more marketing creativity than those oper-ators with vehicle counts below No. 100.

But as any experienced operator can at-test, it does take more time, ability, and

effort to operate and/or manage 150 vehicles than it does 10. So in that sense, this list recognizes and ranks industryachievement.

Over the years, this list has evolved into more of a Who’s Who of successful companies with sizable fl eets than a literal list of the 100 largest fl eets.

We’ll be the fi rst to admit this list is not a complete ranking of ALL the 100 largest companies. Some operators choose to stay off the radar. A handful of companies with fl eets quali-

fying for this list declined to be included this year or simply did not respond to requests for fl eet counts. The reasons are as diverse as the companies.

Among some of the notable decliners and non-responders this year with “100”- worthy fl eets: Aventura Worldwide of Miami, Part-ners Executive Transportation of New York

City, Valera Global of New York City, Boston Coach, ABC Chauffeured Limousines

of San Mateo, Calif., Town Car In-ternational of New York City, and ALT Worldwide Chauf-feured Services of Dallas.

While LCT strives for as complete of a list as possible, we recognize and respect that a privately held free enterprise is within its rights to withhold information and decline appear-ance on the list.

However, all legitimate chauffeured transportation com-panies are required to register their vehicles with a licensing agency — whether state, county, or city — and that informa-tion is a matter of public record accessible to any citizen. As a business media organization, we are well within our rights to gather and present public information.

Some of the companies declining to appear may be found on lists in a supplementary section based on public records. LCT staff members requested vehicle registration/licensing fi gures from agencies in states with the most chauffeured transportation activity and then ranked them based on li-censed vehicles registered. Not all agencies contacted coop-erated or could readily provide numbers. (Your tax dollars at work, or not at work, as the case may be.)

We published numbers from agencies that could provide them in time for the August issue deadlines. Figures are as of June 2010. The piecemeal numbers that appear on public re-cords lists DO NOT necessarily refl ect a company’s total fl eet count, as larger operators will have vehicles registered in multiple cities and states, and quite possibly under multiple company names that may not be readily familiar to the in-dustry. But the public records lists at least provide an added perspective and sense of fl eet proportions in certain areas.

Regardless of fl eet changes, operators are sharing far more hopeful anecdotes with LCT this year than last year about new business and rising revenues. While the industry is still a way from the good times, there are more signs of upturn than downturn. Given the natural inclination of en-trepreneurs to grow, we can only look forward to fl eets get-ting bigger. Fleet fi gures are a big part of the industry story.
