November 2018 Issue No. 1118
President Carmela Reali’s Message First and foremost, I would like to apologize to John and Joanna Ryan for the misunderstanding regarding the Carne Shoot. It was NOT your fault in any way, shape or form. I, am VERY PLEASED that you recon-sidered to continue with one of the most profitable and fun events that we have. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I am looking for a Parliamentarian for the IHC. Someone familiar with Roberts Rules of Order. Must attend all General Meetings and advise
the President on all parliamentary issues when so requested. Please call me at 207-939-8570.
The Italian Heritage Facebook page is NOT a place to vent. If you have any concern, please call me directly at 939-8570. Going forward, any negative comments will be imme-diately removed from our Facebook page. After much discussion during our recent Gen-eral Meeting, it was agreed that action will be taken on members who continue with these comments. However, keep up the positive and fun comments for all members to enjoy. If you have a membership concern, please email Nikki Cox at [email protected] If you want information regarding events, please reach out to Darlene Napolitano at [email protected] or 899-5356. We are a wonderful organization, and are all here for the same purpose, to have fun and support the IHC. Negativity is toxic and does not create an atmosphere that members want.
Get your tickets for New Year’s Eve now, details in Newsletter.
I would like to welcome our newest members to the Italian Heritage Center. They are: Irena C Henry, Gregg and Andrea Turley, Philip A. Latini, Doreen Wheelock, June Ramsey, Cheryl Huntley and Catherine Morris. Please enjoy what the Italian Heritage has to offer.
As always, thank you for your support.

Cultural Committee News from Jim DiBiase
It's Rome's birthday: three more facts about the Eternal City
The she-wolf is the symbol of Rome. On April 21st in 753 BC, the legend goes, Rome was first founded. On its 2771st birthday, let’s look at some more of the most weird and wonderful facts about what is often called the Eternal City. 4. Rome is the most photographed city in Europe and the second most photographed in the world, after New York. 5. It only became Italy's capital in 1870, snatching the title from Florence. Before that, Turin had been the capital. 6. Wondering why you see the letters SPQR all over Rome's monuments and buildings? They stand for the Latin phrase “Senatus Populusque Romanus.” meaning “The senate and people of Rome”
Italian Book Club
The Cultural Committee has started an Italian Book Club, to share titles and content of books writ-ten about Italy, both fiction and non-fiction. In so doing, we will have opportunities through literature to share stories of the history and the culture of Italy. We have eight members already. We are now reading “Leonardo DaVinci” by Walter Isaacson. Anyone interested in joining the book club, please contact Da-vid Giansiracusa at 207-653-8990.
IHC Annual Christmas Concert-
The IHC Chorus has begun rehearsals for our annual Christmas Concert. The Concert is scheduled for Sunday, December 16 at 2:00 pm in the Columbus Room. New members are encouraged to participate in our chorus. Please join us in the Library on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 pm. It’s a lot of fun. See Post-er in another section of this Newsletter.

DECEMBER ITALIAN MOVIE NIGHT
Saturday, December 8
7:00 pm in the Cantina
“Love Is All There Is”
This fast-paced and funny twist on Romeo and Juliet is an "extremely fun-ny film" (WBAI Radio)! OscarÂ(r) winner* Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) and Lainie Kazan (MyBig Fat Greek Wedding) star in this tale of rival Italian catering families that serves up laughs, love and "a touching slice of home cooking" (Variety)! In a small Bronx community, the Cappamezzas use smoke machines and gaudy cakes to lure customers to their Italian restaurant. Across town, the Malacicis use elegance and grace to entice patrons to theirs. Naturally, the families hate each other. But the pasta really begins to fly when they discover that young Rosario Cappamezza (Nathaniel Marston) and Gina Malacici (Jolie) have fallen in love! From first course to last, Love Is All There Is offers "comedy at its very best" (WBAI Radio)! *1999: Supporting Actress, Girl, Interrupted. Movie is entirely in English Donations accepted to defray cost of DVDs. Join us for complimentary snacks and another Montalbano mystery.
NOVEMBER ITALIAN MOVIE NIGHT
Saturday, November 10
7:00 pm in the Cantina
“Il Gioiellino (The Jewel)”
Ernesto Bolta is the accountant of LEDA, a big agribusiness. Its founder, Amanzio Rastelli, appointed several of his relations to managerial positions and the firm decided quite lightly to think internationally and now it is heavily in debt. Luckily for the Rastellis, Bolta is on the watch. He uses all the tricks of his art to cook the books. But rushing headlong will not avoid the coming catastrophe... Movie is in Italian with English subtitles. Donations accepted to defray cost of DVDs. Join us for complimentary snacks and a current Italian-American film.
Italian Idiom for November (nonna said it best): Lungo e’ il cammino, ma l’amore e’ forte.
Long and difficult is the road, but love conquers all. (Love knows no barriers it cannot overcome.)
Election Day Food and Cookie Sale, Tuesday, Nov 6- The Cultural Committee will sponsor a Food and Cookie Sale in the Lobby on Election Day. We will be selling our products from 7:30 am until the polls close (8:00 pm).

Gather Round the Good Stuff……..By Roy Guzman “Good Things Continue to Happen at The IHC”
Hello to everyone, I would like to take a minute and reflect on the past six months that I have been writing this column with an
all-out attempt to put a positive spin on all that happens here at “The IHC” As you may know that is not an easy task, and we still have
some members with their own agendas, who continually undermine, criticize, and purely exist to find fault with all that is undertaken
here. This my fellow members is a shame and an embarrassment for this organization that this behavior is tolerated and allowed to
continue without accountability or confrontation. The IHC is a center that stands for many things in our communi-
ties, within our schools, families, and churches, and the camaraderie shared by all. The IHC is a place we come
to share our stories, take pride in our nationalities, volunteer for the good of the organization as well as all that is
helped by this generosity of the IHC membership.
It is after all “our place” where we gather to enjoy each other’s’ company, share in a libation of our choice as well as a meal. It is a place we share our skills, and talents, to be a part of a positive experience. Many of us have done this for years, and many more to come. However, in the light of all I have addressed in prior writings, the problem seems to continue, it is allowed to grow and blossom and become extremely detrimental to our employ-ees, our families, our officers, and finally to one another. This has such a force that it has caused not only a Past
President, Board Member, and ultimate volunteer, to refuse to become involved because of the derogatory comments made and the slander and defamation of his character. This my fellow members saddens me to no end. This member is one that leads by example and we should all model ourselves, and our values after him. This IHC has been very fortunate over all the dedicated years he has given to this organization. As he steps away there will be a very large void felt in and around the IHC. It is time to rid ourselves of this problem, and return the IHC to what it once was, what it should be and will be. Don’t just sit back and witness all the aforementioned goings on. Step up and be a voice, be heard, and be a positive part of the IHC. At the risk of repeating myself I leave you with this: If you are not part of the solution, then you must be part of the problem? Till next time fellow members, Roy Guzman
Charity Committee News With the holiday season upon us, we are reminded that there are those who are less fortunate than us. The mission of the Charity Committee is “to give back.” Our committee is busy securing families in our community who need a little extra help this holiday season. If you have a family member, neighbor, or work associate, who may need extra help, please contact Kim Toppi, 329-0845, to discuss how the Charity Committee can help. Names are kept CONFIDENTIAL and not shared with other members. We plan to provide each family with a gift card for their Thanksgiving meal, and then help with gifts for Christ-mas. At this time we also plan on doing a gift basket for the Activity Room at Saint Joseph’s Manor. More to come on how you can help.
