OCTOBER ITALIAN MOVIE NIGHT “Rehearsal for a Sicilian Tragedy”
Saturday, October 7
th, 7:00 pm in the Cantina
Don’t let the title fool you. Italian-American actor, John Turturro, goes to Sicily to explore his roots. While there he takes us behind the scenes, filming preparations for the Sicilian Day of the Dead. This evocative, magical-realistic documentary was directed by Turturro’s longtime collaborator, Roman Paska, himself a longtime puppeteer. Both a homage to the art of storytelling and a portrait of a Sicily little known to the outside world, Paska’s film brings us viewers to an otherworldly, timeless place.
Movie is in English with some Italian that is subtitled.
Donations will be accepted to defray the cost of DVDs.
Join us for complimentary snacks and an award winning film that was presented at the Venetian Film Festival.
Cultural Committee News from Jim DiBiase
NOVEMBER ITALIAN MOVIE NIGHT “Pane e Cioccolata”
Saturday, November 11, at 7:00 pm in the Cantina
Nino Garofolo (Manfredi), a working-class Italian immigrant, tries to find a place for himself in cool and methodical Switzerland. Although he tries to hide his Italian background, Nino flops as a waiter, and even as an employee of a chicken-plucking farm. But he is determined to succeed, no matter how bad his situation gets. Nino meets many people of different nationalities in much the same fix; from Elena (Karina), a Greek teacher trying to raise her musical prodigy of a son; to an Italian magnate (Dorelli) who has some shady plans for Nino. This 1973 Italian film is multilingual. There are German, Greek, Italian, and Turkish characters -- and mostly charming. Movie is multilingual (mostly Italian) with English subtitles.
Donations will be accepted to defray the cost of DVDs. Join us for complimentary snacks and an award winning Italian film.

Italian Car Auto Show October 8 2017 (rain date Oct 9)
We have established eight committees for the event (Food, Wait/Cashier Staff, Baked Goods,
Publicity, Plaques/Trophies, Set-Up, Signage and Gifts). If anyone is interested in serving on any of these
committees, or entering an Italian car, please contact Vinnie Fierro at 207-839-6782 or [email protected].
We expect thirty to fifty entries. There will be no charge for entering a car and admission will be free.
Each entry will receive a gift bag; plus trophies and plaques will be presented to the most popular cars in
each category as voted on by the attendees.
Some Italian Fun Facts
Italy has three active volcanoes: Vesuvius, Etna, and Stromboli.
Italy is home to the largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites – more than 40.
Italy speaks a national language, which was based on the Tuscan dialect, but each region still speaks its
own dialect.
The thermometer is an Italian invention.
The piano hails from Italy.
Italian Idiom for October Minestra riscaldata (Reheated soup) Italian boy meets Italian girl. The two fall in love. The relationship has its ups and downs. Both fight to make it work. They grow apart, and the relationship ultimately disintegrates. Months after, they meet and try to rekindle the bond. “Minestra riscaldata” is that state of reviving a relationship gone sour. It’s just never the same. The expression doesn’t just apply to romantic partners; it can also be appropriate to describe the bond between friends, business partners, etc.

We have established three committees (Food, Publicity and Gifts) for the event. If anyone is
interested in serving on any of these committees, or entering an Italian car, please contact
Vinnie Fierro at 207-839-6782 or [email protected]. We expect thirty to fifty entries.

* The Make-A-Wish back pack program has been a big success! We'd like to send a huge thank you out to all of the members for the fabulous response. The Charity Committee has decided to end the collections at the end of September instead of October due to the abundance of items donated and to allow time for a break before the holidays hit. * There will be a Holiday nonperishable food drive - Donations will be accepted starting October 19 at the General Meeting through the November 16 General Meeting as well as collections in the Cantina. Turkey and all the fixings are just one meal. When thinking of your donation, please keep in mind that a lot of the children in the families we are helping primarily eat at school, so over the holidays it is possible that they go without one or more meals. We truly appreciate your help. * We wish we could help everyone in Houston, Florida and the islands impacted by Harvey, Irma, Jose and Maria but that’s not possible. However; if there is someone closely affiliated to the club who has need, please let me or anyone on the Charity Committee know and we will see if we can help. Happy Halloween Everyone!! Arrivederci, Tess
The Scholarship Committee will continue to meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Our next meeting
will take place on October 17 at 6:00 pm. I am hoping that all of you who have been on the committee
will stay with us again this year. We are always looking for new volunteers, so please contact me if you
would like to join us.
I am very excited to be serving on the Charity Committee and I will try my hardest to continue to do a
great job, as Carl Paquette has done in the past. I look forward to meeting all the members...
