AIA, receives an Award of Distinction from AIA Wisconsin and AIA National Service Award at the 2015 Grassroots Conference President’s Message Mastering the Future Business of Architecture Our new six session program titled Mastering the Future Business of Architecture has begun and the reviews have been outstanding. The first two sessions were well attended with more than 20 people at each session. Future sessions include: April 7 Contracts and Our Responsibilities April 28 Negotiation (full day session) May 7 Value Management May 6 Brand Identity. You still have time to register for these sessions and if you ask those who have attended so far, they will tell you it is well worth your time! Led by Cameron McAllister, the first session proved to be an interesting exploration of how we can build better relationships with our clients at all levels. Mr. McAllister was director of marketing for NBBJ and helped the participants work through developing, building, maintaining, and thriving, through your relationships with your clients. From early research on what is important to the client – through the difficult conversations when things go wrong, keeping your focus on the client’s vision, mission, and values, are core to a long-lasting relationship. Session two focused on building High Impact Communication Skills. Louellen Essex, Ph.D, led the group through the barriers blocking effective communication to focus on the impact that understanding a person’s communication style can have on the success, or failure, of the communication process. It all starts with understanding how to actively listen, the process of setting aside your distractions, opening your mind to focus on the discussion, and connecting with the message through an active feedback with the speaker. A good life lesson to take from this session (among others) is email is not an effective means of communication. For communication to be effective, you need to experience the full spectrum of facial, body, and vocal ranges imparted in the message. The last four sessions promise to be as engaging and informative as the first two, so I strongly urge everyone to consider signing up to attend. We can all learn how to be better at the Business of Architecture. Here is a unique opportunity for you, as a member of AIA Minnesota, to grow and develop as leaders and future leaders of architecture in Minnesota. I look forward to meeting more of you at one or more of the remaining sessions. Tim Dufault, AIA AIA Minnesota President AIA Minnesota Executive Vice President Search Committee Update The search for a new Executive Vice President is underway. Led by a representative Search Committee, we started by hiring an executive search firm, Ballinger|Leafblad, and drafting a Position Profile document. The position was posted on local, regional, and national sites. The search firm has directly contacted more than 150 potential candidates and sources. At this time, a number of interested candidates are being reviewed. The search is moving ahead with the objective of identifying a new leader this spring. Applicants are asked to contact Marcia Ballinger, PhD at Ballinger | Leafblad at (651) 341-4840 or Marcia@ ballingerleafblad.com Tom Hysell, AIA Chair, EVP Search Committee Principal, Alliiance
