I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and were able to spend some time with the people that you love and care about, I feel truly blessed that I did. I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to those of you that came out to

Lynnwood Station on New Year’s Eve to see the show and ring in 2015 with music and me! I am so excited about the year to come. We have some awesome things lined up for you including some great speakers, a bowling night, a Reading Rally, Wine Tasting and maybe if it is of interest to the membership, a chance to participate in a build with Habitat for Humanity. One of the things that we talked about at the board retreat this year were ways to be more visible to and in our community so that more people would know who we are and what we do. My hope is that you will all embrace these opportunities to show the community of Calgary how amazing our EWI community is! If more people know about us, the great work we do, and the amazing women that we are then naturally more people will want to be part of us! We all have a story about how EWI has impacted our life and it really is up to us to share our stories. I encourage you all to talk to others about the people that you have met, the connections and relationships that you have made through EWI. We have all had experiences here that have helped us to develop new skills or further hone the ones we already possessed and we know about the lives that we have impacted through our philanthropic endeavors, so please share the story, and more specifically, share your stories. Invite someone to come and check us out – they might like it, we did!

Chapter News

Our annual Year End and Christmas meeting at the Calgary Golf and Country Club was another great success!! We had many great vendors again this year which included returning favorites NV Fashions, Pampered Chief, Epicure, Usborne Books, Banuka Bakery and for the first time Four Patch Mittens. People had a great time socializing and shopping. Thanks to donations from Bank of Montreal, Calgary Marriot, Fairmount Mountain Properties and other corporate donations we had another successful silent auctions with many great prizes. We also added a bean toss that people had a great time playing for their chance to win fantastic flower argument donated by Sherri Cunningham and Panda Flower We also had speakers from Highbanks to talk about how Highbanks has changed their lives and how donations have helped Highbanks.

5 Cleaning Tips to Kick Off 2015

Give your home a fresh start for 2015

When the New Year comes we are all given a fresh start. It’s a way to have a “Clean” slate and why many of us make resolutions. Forget about New Year’s resolutions and start 2015 off with a clean & organized home. These 5 tips will give you a head start in 2015:

1. Erasing the Holidays – Cleaning up Holiday Decorations

To start 2015 off right, the challenge is always cleaning up your holiday decorations. Here’s a great tip to stay organized as it’s always hard to remember where I put things after 11 months. As you take down items label them where they were placed. For example your garland should have notes like, banisters going upstairs, TV stand, entryway etc. When you put them away like goes with like. All garlands goes in a box/bin, all angels, all decorative balls and so on. 2. Out with the OLD in with the NEW

Another great tip to help with the frantic post-holiday-cleanup-mania feeling. Out with the old in with the new. Santa was good to you this year; he replaced some worn close, toothbrushes and rugs. You know what that means toss, recycle or donate old items so you can enjoy your new ones. Don’t feel guilty because the extra clutter is bad for your 2015 “Year of the Goat” chi.

3. Don’t be a goat – Tackle the Cleaning Job of Doom

Tackle a daunting cleaning job that has been looming over your head for some time. It can be any-thing like organizing your magazine collection, dusting your baseboards or cleaning out cupboards. Get it done on the first weekend, you’ll feel great and keep you motivated for the remainder 360 days of 2015.

4. Clutters biggest culprit – Magazines!

Talking about organizing your magazine collection. The start of the year is a great time to go through the piles you have scattered around the house. If they are over 1 year old consider recycling them. If they old sentimental value put them in magazine boxes & label them. Without a label, you’ll never revisit them.

5. Set yourself up for Success

Our last tip to make 2015 a clean stress free year – set yourself up for success. Having the right sup-plies and equipment makes all the difference when it comes to housecleaning, in terms of both ef-fectiveness and efficiency. Use this list to stock up, and create a cleaning caddy to use around your home.

All-purpose cleaner: This type of cleaner works on most countertops, sinks and stovetops.

Glass cleaner: Find a streak-free formula for mirrors, windows and other glass with less ef-fort.

Tile & grout cleaner: An acid-based, scrub-free solution works best on bathtubs, shower tiles and toilets.

Wood cleaner: When cleaning wood furniture, opt for a polish made for the type of finish on your wood.

Floor cleaner: With a polyurethane seal need only a solution of warm water and a mild dish-washing soap to come clean after sweeping or dry mopping. In general, though, you will want to use as little water as possible when cleaning wood.

Microfibre cloth: Microfibres are mostly made of polyester, and, unlike cotton, they leave no lint behind.

Extendible duster : No matter your height, you will be able to reach the tops of the ceiling fans in your home with one of these handy cleaning tools.

Scrubby sponges : The sponge side works well for most cleanups, while the scrubby side

Five New Year’s Resolutions You Could Actually Keep!!

The year 2015 is coming, which means it’s time to resolve to “lose weight” and “manage stress” and “save money,” according to the U.S. government’s official list of the best New Year’s resolutions. These seem like fine ideas for overachievers. The rest of us should stick to the relatively attainable goal of honesty, and just admit that one day we might be skinny, rich, and calm, but it probably won’t be in 2015. Here are some more feasible resolutions.

1. Stop working out. We learned three things this year about working out: 1. You get in shape with a daily, seven-minute workout. 2. Running for five minutes a day also works. 3. You can even run for one minute per day and still get in shape. Here's a fourth thing you might take from all this science: Stop working out. If one minute is helpful, who's to say zero minutes isn't even more helpful? Not us.

2. Leave work as early as possible. If you lived in Europe, you probably wouldn’t be reading this right now. This kind of resolution wouldn’t exist, and we would all be on vacation, eating baguettes and laughing. This is a fact. Americans work 21 percent more hours than Germans do, 15 percent more than the French, and 5 percent more than the Swiss. Meanwhile, most Europeans and people living in the industrialized world live longer than Americans. Do not spend your short life in the office. Leave early.

3. Ask for a raise. If you are a man, this is not something you need to resolve to do; you probably already did it. If you are a woman, though, get on it. It's clearly uncomfortable to ask someone to give you money, but think of it this way: If you work in a regulated profession that isn't bike messengering or marijuana delivery (not mutually exclusive), the person you are asking probably isn't giving you more money from their wallet. The company you make richer via your work will be handing it out. Chances are, said company has already done this for all your male colleagues this year already. It's possible you won't be applauded for asking, but honestly, anything you do that is mildly assertive is already making you seem pushy. Worst case, your boss continues to think of you that way. Best case, you get a raise.

4. Take more staycations. Apparently, 40 percent of Americans do not use their paid vacation days. That could be because no one has any money to travel with: As my colleague Josh Eidelson reported in August, wages declined for almost every segment of the U.S. workforce in 2014. If that includes you, one solution is to use those days by staying home and not going to work, also known as a “staycation.” A secret of the Internet is that looking up flights on Kayak.com is actually more satisfying than spending hundreds of dollars to smell airplane food and touch a stranger’s sweaty arm. You can spend the first two days of your staycation on Kayak.com and the rest learning how to cook food in mass quantities that doesn’t also look like throw-up.

5. Do not buy a selfie stick. The selfie stick, a product that would be right at home at a seventh-grade invention fair, is selling out at U.S. stores because Americans apparently want to transcend “the limits of the human arm” when taking a photo of themselves, the New York Post reports. Do not let yourself be one of these people in 2015. Instead, be a force for good in the world, and harness the power of your human arm to break someone else’s selfie stick.
