President’s Message

David Keagle, Volunteer Board President I am excited as we venture into the new year-2018. As your new president, I’d like to introduce myself to you. I know many of you but with over 500 volunteers, there are many I do not know.

I began my volunteering services when I returned from active military duty by becoming a Longmont Police Reserve. I was with the Police Department for 24 years. Upon retiring from the Reserves, I decided to volunteer at Longmont United Hospital working in the Emergency Department. I’ve been a board member going on four years now and look forward to representing you as the President of the organization.

I’m sure that we all share a common trait…we love volunteering and supporting our Longmont community, working with the patients and the staff of the hospital.

So with great enthusiasm I look forward to working with you this year as we continue to provide our services at Longmont United.

Laura Laura’s Note Laura F. Kinder, CVA Director, Volunteer and Spiritual Care Services Amazing things happened at LUH during 2017 because of volunteers in service and through the fundraising efforts of the Volunteer Board of Directors. These numbers only hint at the profound impact volunteers have had on patients, visitors, staff and our community at large.

2017 Volunteer Accomplishments and Statistics

561 volunteers in 51 different services contributed 43,873 hours.

84% of the hours were given by adults; 9% by juniors; 5% by community members, and 2% by therapy dogs.

This is equivalent to 21 full time paid positions; and worth $1,059,094 as valued by the Independent Sector (1 hour of volunteer time = $24.14). Your hours complement staff and help maintain excellent patient satisfaction.

We had 236 volunteers join us this year.

We said good-bye to 194 for a variety of reasons, with moving and change in availability the most common reasons; we closed two service areas: TCU and The Homestead.

Our youngest volunteers are 14, our oldest volunteers are 96, and our average age is 56.

We span six generations; all adults were born in the 20th century; all juniors in the 21st.

We are 23% male; 77% female.

The Gift Shop’s profit was $52,241.04 making it the largest volunteer-driven fundraiser for the hospital.

Volunteers raised and donated to the 2017 Wish List $26,759.49. This includes $11,404.60 for the purchase of Preemie Annie who belongs to the SimFamily (Mom, Dad, Baby and Preemie). These simulation models have been used extensively in the LUH Innovation Learning Center.

Key Messages at Key Times

Joe Tasse, Interim CEO

Over the last 60 days since arriving, I have encountered over 700 committed associates, over 500 passionate volunteers and more than 300 excellent physicians and providers working every day to provide caring and compassionate care to the people of this community. I am experiencing the legacy of Longmont United Hospital and I am impressed.

Our associates, volunteers and medical staff are our best eyes and ears in the community and our best representatives to the community. I ask that each one of you be diligent about speaking positively about the hospital and its services and correcting information that is not accurate. We encourage you to reach out to your direct supervisor or anyone on the Senior Leadership Team, if you hear things that are concerning or don’t seem right. Don’t let a rumor fester. When in doubt, ask. For those who want to know where we're headed, you can tell them our strategy is to strengthen our core services, attract the best quality physicians to join our top notch medical staff and deliver high quality, compassionate care at a reasonable cost. Tell ‘em, “We’re on a mission!”

Luncheon Highlights

What better way to start off our 60th Anniversary Year than a luncheon that featured the beautiful singing of CR5 Erie High School choir. They were so excited to sing for us that they inquired about coming to sing in the lobby for our patients and visitors.

We honored those present by service areas and years of service and shouted out to two volunteers: Mango for being our Planetree therapy dog of the year and to Joyce Johnson for reaching 4,000 hours of service. Joyce will be receiving the Presidential Lifetime Service Achievement Award – the highest award given to volunteers. She joins a robust group of LUH volunteers who have achieved this honor.

The list of 2017 Accomplishments are listed on page 1 and continue above on this page. As volunteers, you have a lot to be proud of. We can’t wait to see what you will achieve in the coming year and the next 60 years of service!

Special gratitude goes to associates who staffed the Welcome Desk so that volunteers could attend the luncheon: Judy Balman, Tammie Guthrie, Desiree Rangel, Jose Sidas, and Travis Silvas.

There were 32 LUH staff members who received the 2018 Diamond Champion Award. They are listed on page 6.

4. 4 STAR Hospital Designation by CMS: The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rated LUH as four stars out of five and placing it in the top one-third of hospitals in the U.S., based on 64 metrics for quality, safety, the patient care experience and efficiency.

5. Leapfrog Safety Grade of “B”: This is an upgrade from a previous score of “C”. Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in the quality and safety of American health care; hospitals are rated with a score of A, B, C, or F (with A being the best) as a quick way for consumers to choose the safest hospitals.

Two New Physician Groups Aligned With LUH: Boulder Medical Center & Colorado Heart and Vascular: Two major Colorado physician groups have begun providing services at LUH and plan to have a long-term relationship, providing excellent clinical care for the patients and families served by LUH in the community. Boulder Medical Center now provides OB/GYN care and delivery coverage. Colorado Heart and Vascular has begun providing inpatient and outpatient cardiology care.

9. Implementation of Pediatric Hospitalist Program through Centura Health’s care alliance with Children’s Hospital Colorado: With the implementation of the pediatric hospitalist program, LUH is currently the only hospital in Boulder County with an inpatient pediatric unit. This partnership ensures the best care for patients from birth to 18.

10. Full Year of Integration with Centura Health: Helping realize the vison of strengthening LUH for the long run ahead, 2017 was a year of learning how to be successful as part of the largest health system in Colorado. It is about being here, remaining committed to the community and serving the people in it, and LUH achieved this in 2017.

A Gift of Love Judy Cabrera, Chaplain

February is the month for Valentine’s Day. The name conjures up such words as “romance”, “flowers”, “hearts”, “chocolate”, and especially, “LOVE”. Generally, people who have a significant other in their lives, love this day, and those who don’t, prefer to ignore it. The challenge for us it to “LOVE” in whatever circumstance we are in. Our work, and how we relate to our patients at LUH, IS a “gift of love”. Our work often involves heroic stories of healing, as well as stories of pain, while bearing another’s sadness and sorrow. We are called to participate in difficult circumstances, such as end-of-life experiences. This can be physically, emotionally and spiritually draining for our patients, as well as for us, as care providers. While we cannot avoid this, we can be encouraged, as it can also compel us to love. A. Powell Davies gave profound advice on loving with open hearts: “When sorrow comes, let us accept it simply, as a part of life. Let the heart be open to pain; let it be stretched by it. All the evidence we have says that this is the better way. An open heart never grows bitter. Or if it does, it cannot remain so. In the desolate hour, there is an outcry; a clenching of the hands upon emptiness, a burning pain of bereavement; a weary ache of loss. But anguish, like ecstasy, is not forever. There comes a gentleness, a returning quietness, a restoring stillness. This, too, is a door to life. Here, also, is a deepening of meaning --and it can lead to dedication; a going forward to the triumph of the soul, the conquering of the wilderness. And in the process will come a deepening inward knowledge that in the final reckoning, all is well.” May we have the courage to serve with an open heart. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Feb 10 ..... Teddy Bear Clinic Mar 16 ..... Collective Goods Sale Apr 13 ..... Lovingly Used Seeking New Homes

Saturday, February 10, 2018 1:00 - 4:00pm

Main Gallery

First visits to a hospital and medical procedures can

be frightening for a child. At LUH our annual Teddy

Bear Clinic is a great way for that first experience to

feel safe, reassuring, and even helpful to someone in

need.

The Clinic allows children to see first hand how a

hospital can treat their “ill or injured” stuffed animals

– Teddy Bears. Once a child is faced with an actual

medical situation they will have a non-threatening

memory of how a Teddy Bear patient is treated and

cared for. They will also get some hands on health

information like doing yoga, eating healthy, good

dental and hand hygiene with hospital staff and

volunteers.

As volunteers, we can enjoy a rewarding experience

as well. We need volunteers to help guide tours, be

the welcoming committee, and help with different

health booths healing Teddy Bears. We also include

some of our caring clowns, TAILS teams, musicians

in the main lobby, sewers (to patch up injured Teddy

Bears) and anyone who has an interest in pediatrics.
