MINUTES OF THE APRIL 2, 2013 MEETING OF THE TRIANGLE AREA OSTOMY ASSOCIATION

Sam Bundy, President, called the April meeting to order at 7:30 PM by welcoming 27+ members and

guests. Everyone enjoyed delicious refreshments provided by Sonya and Ed Withers. Sam welcomed Jes Ormondroyd, our newsletter editor, and her family along with new baby Jett! In spite of all of her responsibilities with a new baby, Jes has continued to edit and publish our newsletter every month. A huge thank you to her for all of her support!

Bonnie Sessums, Secretary, had nothing to report. Ruth Rhodes, Treasurer, stated that she had received over $500.00 in donations in memory of our Past

President, Dan Wiley. Dan passed away on March 17 and requested that donations be given in his memory to the TAOA. Ruth will keep the donations until a suitable project can be determined in Dan’s memory. Bonnie Sessums, Secretary, met with Dan’s sister, Patsy Marshburn, to pick up his ostomy supplies that the family donated to our group. After the local WOC nurses determine if they can use any of the supplies, Jeff Burcham, Vice President, will send the remaining items to Friends of Ostomates Worldwide.

Sam announced that the program for our May meeting will be break out sessions by ostomy type and encouraged members to bring their spouses or other caregivers as one of the group will be for caregivers. Stephanie announced that Jane Fellows and Leanne Richbourg will have some sort of program for us at our June meeting as well as our end-of-year discussions.

Stephanie introduced Sonya Withers, Disability Analyst at Wake Medical Center as our guest speaker. Sonya is married to our Web Master and member, Ed Withers. After graduating from college, Sonya was a Social Worker at Wake Med for 8 or 9 years, and then worked for Social Security for 4 years before returning to Wake Med as a representative for people who are applying for disability. She talked about Social Security disability benefits, who is eligible, qualifications for the benefits and the steps one needs to take to apply. She said that you can do this on your own or use an attorney or non-attorney representative to help. Attorneys can charge up to 25% of back payments up to $6,000 if a person is deemed eligible for benefits. A non-attorney can also charge for their service. The Social Security office has a list of attorneys and non-attorneys in our area that can be requested. After a very interesting and informative talk, Sonya answered members’ questions.

After thanking Sonya and Ed again for providing refreshments, Sam adjourned the meeting at 8:30 PM. The May meeting will be on Tuesday, May 7th. Blanche Bahamonde will provide refreshments.

Respectfully submitted, Bonnie Sessums, Secretary

Daniel Raymond Wiley October 6, 1946 – March 17, 2013

We are deeply saddened by the death of our Past President, Dan Wiley, on Sunday March, 17, 2013 at Durham Regional Hospital. Dan is survived by two sisters, Patsy Marshburn (William) of Rocky Mount, Jane Rigsbee (Lewis) of Valdese, a brother, William (Gail) and several nieces and nephews. The family requested Memorial contributions be made to TAOA. Many of Dan’s friends have responded generously. A total of $600.00 has been received for The Dan R. Wiley Memorial Fund. The fund will be used to provide assistance in our community and to FOW. Other benefits will be designated at a later date. Our appreciation has been expressed to the Wiley family and to each of the contributors. Our thoughts and prayers will remain with Dan’s family.

Wouldn't it be great to have Dr. Oz talk about OSTOMIES on his show? Douglas Yakich, a fellow ostomate, has developed a petition that is on change.org. Here is the link to sign this petition. Let's make this happen! Only 353 more signatures needed (as of April 26, 2013)
