Annual Meeting Recap and Plans What a great Annual Meeting in August! We set an all-time record for the number of attendees at 140! TDOT Commissioner John Schroer was a crowd pleaser at the fundraising luncheon for the TN Engineering Foundation Luncheon for over 150. The Commissioner talked to us about things that need to be done and the realities of state and federal funding. And the Auction raised about $12,000 for the TN Professional Engineers PAC. Talks are under way to combine forces with ASCE for the 2012 Annual Meeting. We will keep you posted as plans developed. You will not want to miss the opportunity to network with even more of your colleagues at the meeting next August/September. I hope each of you had an amazing summer. In my last article, I challenged myself and each of you to do something this year to better your engineering legacy through TSPE. Have you completed or worked toward completing that challenge? Are you looking for opportunities to educate young people and to mentor new graduates and PE’s? Are you “talking TSPE” to your coworkers and colleagues? Yes! Our annual meeting was evidence of that. What a wonderful annual meeting we had! We set a 10-year attendance record and charitable donations to the Engineering Foundation increased over 400%. I extend my sincere appreciation to everyone that made the annual meeting such a success – especially Judy Logue, Candy Toler and our sponsors. Annual Meeting Recap and PlansWhat a great Annual Meeting in August! We set an all-time record for the number of attendees at 140! TDOT Commissioner John Schroer was a crowd pleaser at the fundraising luncheon for the TN Engineering Foundation Luncheon for over

And it does not stop there . . . we drew a big crowd at the joint TSPE/ACEC Nashville Chapter breakfast featuring Congressman Diane Black on September 27.

Architects’ and Engineers’ Board UpdateThe A/E Board asked TSPE and ACEC to investigate issues related to the state’s industrial exemption because of its impact on the health, safety and welfare of all Tennesseans. Steve King (Knoxville Public Works) is chairing that task force, which met for the second time in August. Other TSPE members of the task force are: Bryon Fortner (Sevierville

Public Works), Dennis Henderson (TLM Associates, Jackson), Sandra Knight (Bradley County Engineer), and Tom Needham (Memphis Public Works).

At its meeting in July, the NSPE House of Delegates adopted a policy on the industrial exemption requiring that “all engineers in responsible charge of the practice of engineering as defined in the NCEES Model Law and Rules in a manner which potentially impacts the public health, safety and welfare should be required by all state statutes to be licensed professional engineers.” The policy suggests phasing out existing exemptions.

Ways to ParticipateContact your chapter president if you are interested in becoming more active in your chapter. The TSPE Nominating Committee is also looking for people to fill slots on a wide variety of state boards as well as state officers. TSPE will have the opportunity to recommend individuals for NSPE Fellow. Information about the requirements is at http://www.nspe.org/AboutNSPE/fellowmembershipgrade.html

Greetings everyone! I hope each of you had an amazing summer.

In my last article, I challenged myself and each of you to do something this year to better your engineering legacy through TSPE. Have you completed or worked toward completing that challenge? Are you

looking for opportunities to educate young people and to mentor new graduates and PE’s? Are you “talking TSPE” to your coworkers and colleagues? Yes! Our annual meeting was evidence of that.

What a wonderful annual meeting we had! We set a 10-year attendance record and charitable donations to the Engineering Foundation increased over 400%. I extend my sincere appreciation to everyone that made the annual meeting such a success – especially Judy Logue, Candy Toler and our sponsors.

I also congratulate Candy Toler on being named “Association Executive of the Year” by the Tennessee Society of Association Executives.

As this is the last newsletter of this year, I wish each of you a safe and prosperous holiday season. Keep up the good work!

steinMetz And the electric MotorWhen Charles Proteus Steinmetz emigrated from Europe, he was stopped at immigration and was about to be turned back. A friend of his who had invited him to America was there to meet him and got involved. “Why are you sending him back?” He’s a mathematician. America has all the mathematicians we need.” “Didn’t he tell you that he’s also an electrician?” “Why didn’t he say so? We need electricians.”

Steinmetz went to work for his friends engineering firm. Up until then the design and manufacture of large electric motors was a hit and miss affair. Some motors worked and if a design worked well it was put into production. However a working design could not necessarily be scaled up. Many attempts overheated for an unknown reason.

Stienmetz presented a theoretical paper to an engineering conference. He had been exploring hysteresis. He explained hysteresis and presented calculations and mathematical models. I understand that there was a rush to obtain copies of his paper by design engineers who realized that he had just presented the reason for the overheating and the tools to predict it. Overnight the design of electric motors became a science instead of a guess.

Henry Ford wanted to install batteries and starters in his cars, but charging the batteries was a challenge. The meeting was in the evening, and Henry was forced to wait until Mr. Steinmetz’ spent his customary time with his friends children before they went to bed. Henry was on the verge of leaving in disgust. When the children went to bed and Stienmetz turned his attention to Henry, he quickly sketched out the basic design of the three brush generator which went on to charge automotive batteries for decades.

Local and state MATHCOUNTS competitions will be here before you know it (February and March). I encourage you to join the fun in making these competitions available to budding engineers. Information on the local and state competitions is at http://www.tnspe.org/MATHCOUNTS.htm.

If you are not receiving electronic updates from me at least once a month and would like to know more about what is going on in TSPE, please send me an email and ask to be included on the list ([email protected]).

We are grateful to you for your continued support of TSPE and its many programs. Judy and I wish you a wonderful holiday and a great 2012!

This fall marks the 3rd fall semester in a row that we have had 40+ students in our ENGR1210: Introduction to Engineering class. Here are some of our secrets: (1) aggressive and persistent academic advising, (2) continual commitment to outreach, and (3) professional networking among our students, our faculty, our staff, our administrators, and area professionals in STEM careers. The focus in on our students – our present students, our future students, and our past students.

Outreach: We continue to visit area middle schools and high schools as time and schedules permit.

MathCOUNTS: Our Pre-Engineering students and faculty have been actively involved in MathCOUNTS since 1999.

Pre-Engineering Scholarships: In September 2001, as a positive response to 9/11, our TSPE Club began building for the future by contributing to our Northeast State Foundation and participating in the creation of new Foundation scholarships for students pursuing A.S. degrees in Pre-ENGINEERING and Pre-INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

Annual TRIPS to 4-Year Universities: Every Fall, we plan and execute a trip (UTK TRIP) to the College of Engineering at The University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Every Spring, we plan and execute a trip (TTU TRIP) to the College of Engineering at The Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville.

Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) – Northeast State’s Student Chapter, a “Delta” chapter, affiliated with the Upper East Tennessee Chapter of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (www.tnspe.org), a member State Society of the National Society of Professional Engineers (www.nspe.org), was recognized and certified eligible for participation in the Program for NSPE Student Chapters in May 1999.

Greg Reed, PhD, PE (L), John Schroer, Commissioner TN Department of Transportation and Candy Toler, TSPE Executive Director

During the past year, TEF’s efforts have centered on college scholarships for engineering students, continuing sponsorship of MATHCOUNTS, partnering with K-12 STEM activities such as a Nashville STEM hub and Girls Raised in Tennessee Science, and establishing a mechanism to partner with professional society local chapters or other groups raising funds to promote engineering in education. We are open to other K-12 STEM-related activities that we can partner with as well.

The TEF is the co-creation of TSPE and ACEC of TN who appoint three members each to the board of directors. TEF is in discussions with three other organizations which we hope will choose TEF to administer their college scholarship programs. The main fund raiser this year was the keynote luncheon with TDOT Commissioner Schroer which was a huge success. We thank all the sponsors who made it possible.

The Board is planning during the coming year to increase its efforts to encourage engineering firms, professional organizations, and allied businesses to establish engineering scholarships in partnership with TEF. We are exploring the possibility of grant funds for scholarships or education programs from government and foundation sources. We are also in preliminary conversations with an independent organization whose purpose is to raise funds and volunteers to enhance STEM education in K-12 school curricula.

The downturn in the investment markets has had a negative impact on scholarship endowments, so developing additional sources of funds is important to the increasing achievement of our mission. In order for TEF to fulfill the vision that TSPE and ACEC of TN have for it, the chapters of the two parent organizations should consider TEF as a tax-deductible way to raise funds for its scholarship or local education partnership programs. All chapters are encouraged to consider the TEF as a partner and we will be happy to discuss opportunities at any time.
