HEA continued its positive momentum this Fall with a flurry of activity. For the first time, IHEA held three education seminars simultaneously. In addition to our annual Combustion Seminar, we held our second Safety Seminar of the year, as well as our first ever Induction Seminar. Of course, this augmented our typical attendance

which ensured the associated tabletop exhibition was a lively event with great conversation and camaraderie. Due to the success of the event, we plan to hold these three seminars together again next Fall.

IHEA held its Fall Business Conference immediately after the Fall Seminars. First, we watched the Columbus Clippers take on the Indianapolis Indians at Huntington Park on a beautiful night. While we were treated to a great, competitive game, it was also a tremendous opportunity to build relationships. A lot was accomplished during the business meetings the next day. The Education Committee finalized plans for the recently re-launched “Fundamentals of Process Heating” online course as well as the new DOE Process Heating Sourcebook. I want to thank Paul Sheaffer from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Program Manager for the DOE Process Heating Sourcebook, for joining us at the meeting. I also want to thank Michael Muller from DOE/Rutgers University for joining us at the Government Relations meeting and providing valuable insight regarding how IHEA and DOE can work together in the future. The Marketing Communications and Membership Committee worked on implementing our new membership categories and planning ITPS Americas.

In the afternoon, Casey McCarty from the Columbus Idea Foundry discussed the new exciting makerspace trend and how they may become the new way we provide manufacturing training. Michael Muller discussed new developments at the DOE with regards to process heating. And Michael Collins of MPC Management gave an enlightening talk on “What You Need to Know to Grow.”

We are hard at work planning and confirming speakers for both IHEA’s Annual Meeting in April and ITPS Americas in August.

IHEA’s 87th Annual Meeting will be held at the world-renown Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO from April 20 – 23. Our lineup of speakers and social activities is nearly complete and will be sent to you in early January. This will be one Annual Meeting you do not want to miss!

ITPS Americas is our new “executive leadership” conference that we are co-sponsoring with Industrial Heating Magazine and are partnering with our colleagues at CECOF, THERMPROCESS, Heat Processing magazine, Messe Dusseldorf and VDMA. We are very excited to bring this new event to life, and think it is a tremendous opportunity to showcase IHEA members. Read more about it later in this newsletter.

In other news, we have successfully launched our Induction Division! We look forward to working with our new induction heating members. Additionally, I’d like to welcome our five new members shown on page 3! Also, I recently had the honor of representing IHEA along with Anne & Andy Goyer and Tim Lee at the CECOF meeting in Helsinki, Finland. Our friends at CECOF were welcoming as always and we thank them for hosting us. Finally, IHEA just returned from the ASM Heat Treat Show in Detroit where we met with multiple members and member prospects.

We have had a very successful 2015. 2016 promises to build on that success, especially with the launch of ITPS Americas. Thank you for your continued support of IHEA, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any thoughts or suggestions on how we can better ensure that IHEA meets the needs of your companies.

IHEA Says FarewellRay Ostrowski September 1, 1924 - August 12, 2015

Long time IHEA Safety & Codes Seminar Chairman, Ray Ostrowski, passed away in August. Ray started working for Lindberg Furnace Company at the age of 16 and returned there after his enlist-ment in the Army where he attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant and piloted a crew of 11 in the American B-17 Flying Fortress, flying 28 missions in the European theater of combat, including Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He then became the Sales Manager for Protection Control, in Skokie, IL and retired at the age of 77. He was an active member of the NFPA 86 Standards com-mittee for over 46 years and Chairman of the Board of Combustion Safety. He was the host of the IHEA Safety Standards Seminar for years where his messages were inspiring, his jokes were funny, and he certainly knew how to deliver a punch line! Raymond was sharp, witty, charming and a classy guy who will be missed by many.

Alois F. (Louis) Etschmaier March 26, 1940 — August 28, 2015

Louis Etschmaier, a gracious gentleman, leader in the industry for many years and past IHEA board mem-ber, died in August. IHEA friends near and far are saddened by the news, and fondly remember his legacy. IHEA past president and friend of Louis, Mike Shay offers a touching tribute.

I first met Louis Etschmaier in 1995 when he arrived at Hauck’s front door, accompanied by a gentlemen name George Robb, who announced that Louis was the new President and CEO of Hauck. Louis brought a new management style to Hauck that brought to the employees a new motivation, commitment and above all, a success we had not experienced. Louis was a professional in every sense of the word. I enjoyed our discussions and our disagreements. We would argue with each other and we would laugh together. Despite Louis’ sometimes serious expression, he loved to laugh.

My favorite story about Louis was when he first arrived and asked me to arrange visits to a few of our key customers. Our first stop was at a customer who welcomed Louis politely and eloquently. Next, we visited a customer who was neither so polite nor eloquent. The second customer’s brashness took Louis by surprise and we were quickly dismissed. I thought that this would be my last day at Hauck but indeed it was not. Louis could roll with the punches and at times would throw a few himself.

In my opinion, Louis’ finest characteristic was his love and devotion to his family. He would speak of Judy and his daughters with love, respect and delight. His entire demeanor would change when he spoke of his family. This is how I learned to first ask about his family when I walked into his office to inform him of mistakes that I made.

Louis was intelligent, straightforward, fair, well read and fully engaged in his work. It was my pleasure and good fortune to know him and to have worked with him. He will be missed.

On behalf of the IHEA membership and staff, we offer our sincere condolences to Louis’ family & friends.

IHEA Fall Seminars and Tabletop ExhibitionThis fall, IHEA held three educational seminars simultaneously. In addition to the popular Combustion Seminar, we held a second Safety Seminar (due to high demand after the sellout crowd in the spring), as well as the inaugural Induction Seminar. The speakers continue to receive excellent ratings and the table-top exhibits are a crowd pleaser, especially with the inclusion of the new induction companies this year.

Due to the additional attendance from all three seminars, the tabletop exhibition was energetic and brought great dialogue and fellowship among the crowd. And as always, we were happy to present one lucky attendee with an e-Reader!

IHEA Fall Business Conference The Hilton Columbus was the perfect venue for the IHEA Fall Business Conference. To kick off the fall meeting, attendees were treated to a private picnic area at Huntington Ballpark to enjoy the Columbus Clippers minor league baseball game. The next morning led to committee meetings followed by the general session with the committee reports andkeynote speakers who brought a variety of significant information to our members, as B.J. Bernard highlighted in his letter. The Fall Business Conference continues to provide an excellent forum for IHEA members to get information, participate in IHEA’s mission and build valuable relationships.

HEAT TREAT 2015In October, IHEA exhibited at Heat Treat 2015 in Detroit, MI at the Cobo Center. IHEA member Surface Combustion sponsored the networking reception complete with a fireworks show for the city of Detroit! It was a great evening and a highlight of the show. Many prospective IHEA members stopped by the booth for more information. The IHEA booth promoted ITPS Americas 2016, along with a collection of resources that are available through the association. Fourteen IHEA members exhibited at Heat Treat 2015.

IHEA COMMITTEE UPDATES Government Relations Committee Update The Government Relations committee’s main objective is to determine how they can work with Lobbyit to move forward with IHEA’s Authoritative Voice and create value to IHEA’s membership. In the GR meeting several ideas were discussed with Keith Nelson and Larry Wallwork from Lobbyit. Keith pointed out that legislators and government agencies are in need and would welcome informa-tion and advice from IHEA concerning energy, emissions and best practices. The IHEA Government Relations committee would like to take advantage of the current opportunities and participate with and influence our legislators and government agencies.

The first task is to address aspects of the DOE’s Energy Assessment Document relative to energy saving equipment and strategies. This will involve a technical review of IHEA members’ capabilities and how that can be leveraged with our legislators. With the help of Lobbyit, that can advocate for tax incentives to promote energy efficient equipment and systems.

We need a core group that will maintain the momentum and help carry the work load so that we can demonstrate to our members the value of being an IHEA member. Please consider joining Mike Shay, Dave Schalles, Jeff Valuck, George Burnet and Andy Goyer to follow through on an opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities and expertise to our legislators. There will be a lot to accomplish and we will need your help. It is the Government Relations Committee’s goal to take positive action to produce mea-surable results for IHEA. Members wishing to join the IHEA Government Relations Committee can call IHEA at 859-359-1575.

Safety Standards and Codes Committee ISO TC244 UPDATE

IHEA’s Safety Standards and Codes Committee has been actively involved with the ISO TC244 working groups to assist in creating the globally accepted 13577 series of safety standards. This is a critical development for the industrial heat processing industry.

The basis for this effort was to avoid adoption of strictly European methods for oven and furnace safety standards. An ISO standard which followed the Euro-pean Standards would have put U.S. manufacturers at a disadvantage. In order to stay competitive, the U.S. had to get involved. The American National Stan-dards Institute (ANSI) is the United States member organization to ISO and needed experts to participate in the development of this new standard. Seeing that IHEA has experience in developing and refining standards through a long term relationship with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), they in-vited us to participate in and fund this important project. IHEA’s contributions have been beneficial to the creation of the globally accepted standard as well as to the IHEA member companies who have provided volunteers to serve on the ISO TC244 Committees. Through their work, IHEA is proud to provide experts who can speak to the process and present their knowledge at IHEA’s education and training events. IHEA also delivers valuable discussions during the Safety Standards and Codes committee meetings. A new IHEA member states, “IHEA has quickly become an invaluable resource. The insight and knowledge available through the Safety Standards and Codes Committee has been very helpful in the advancement of my understanding of industrial combustion and the many applica-tions therein. Regardless of how unconventional or complex the inquiry, and I for some reason seem to have a lot of those, IHEA can point you in the right direction.” Justin Powell | Heat Combustion Solutions, LLC

As the project comes to a close, IHEA would like to thank all those who have spent countless hours in committee meetings and working groups in order to provide U.S. manufacturing with a globally accepted safety standard.

THANK YOU to those who participated in the TC244 Working Groups!
