* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Because of layoffs and changes at ATK we are no longer able to mail, Snail Mail, the newsletter. Due to the cost of printing and postage it has been determined and will be necessary to publish the newsletter on the Club web site only. We hope that this will not be a problem for our members.

Byron Okada, KE7IRH, who still works at ATK, was contacted by the Recreational Council (RC). They told him about possible Club funding again. They requested Club information, membership and a budget. The request for funding was turned in as well as the membership information to the RC. Further information will be printed as we receive it from ATK. See below:

ATK sent Byron a response to the funding request. It appears that the RC has to be very selective which Clubs they provide funding for and our Club will not be funded this year, 2012 or 2013. We need to get more ATK employees as members of our Club to get possible funding from the RC.

Box Elder County ARES Amateur Radio Emergency Service

August 2013: What happens when you set up an antenna where you can’t drill through the roof or apply mounting hardware to make sure the antenna will stay where you put it? Well I found out. During July when we had a few days with high winds in Brigham. There were a couple of days when the wind was really high. The first day we had high winds I went to check on the on the antenna and found everything was fine. The second time we had high winds I got a call early one morning giving me the bad news. It took me about 15 minutes to get the mount back up on the roof. I had to do a little Cowboy rope work to get the antenna mount back up on the roof.

I had told Jim and others that I needed to get weight on the antenna mount just to make sure if there were high winds the antenna would not blow over. Well the wind was strong enough the second time it did blow over. Lucky for me I rigged the antenna with a catch just in case something might happen.

I took the antenna off the mast and checked it for damage. I removed the radial that was badly bent and straightened it then replaced it. I found some large bricks at the DI and cable tied them together after hauling them to the roof. I broke one of the bricks while lifting them up the wall but that is ok because they are just dead weight on the antenna mount. After the repair I went in and checked the antenna with the MFJ antenna analyzer. Everything is back up on the roof now and is acceptable for use should we need to use it. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
