April 13th unlucky for some!

Family problems come in all shapes and sizes; some are short-lived and easily managed, while others are more chronic and difficult to handle. Somewhere between these two ends of the scale is where the story of Barrot House in House of Discord by Sadiqa Peerbhoy begins. She will introduce us to the book on the 23rd March.

An accomplished author Sadiqa is a familiar name in the Bangalore literati circles for her column in the Deccan Herald - ‘Swalpa Ajust Maadi’ besides being the Principal of Wigan and Leigh College.

The city of Bombay plays an important role in the narrative and its resilience is tested in the wake of the riots arising from the Babri Masjid communal violence. The murky past of the family patriarch and all who depend on him, House

of Discord is a saga about a family breaking apart in a city that is burning. But their problems are like a washing machine which can twist us, spin us and knock us around but in the end, we come out cleaner, brighter and better than before.

The prose is expressive; the language fluent and metaphorical. It is the kind of writing a reader would undoubtedly enjoy losing themselves in. The book connects with the reader on so many levels, making it an enjoyable read. Look for a copy in the library.

April 13th has author Shefali Tripathi Mehta introducing her book “Stuck Like Lint,” at 6pm in the Ballroom. Shefali expects 100 guests for the event so come early to grab the front seats and enjoy the snacks.

April 27th Author Hari Bhaskaran book “These Bloomin Anglos” as we are expecting a packed house in the Ball Room come early. Tea, coffee & snacks available.

The book for discussion is the thriller “The Woman in the Window,” by Gillian Flynn.

On 2nd March we had a Recollection led by ‘Happy Families’ an evangelization movement of families. The Recollection was titled “Get out – of your (Spiritual) Comfort Zone”Most of us like to live within our comfort zone – it is soothing, familiar and well, comforting. Yet, it also is stagnant. Especially, from the spiritual angle. Several of us believe that just going for mass on Sundays, occasional prayers, rosaries and fasting are good enough for us, without the need to grow closer to God. The Bible calls Christians in comfort zones lukewarm Christians. The Lord says clearly in the bible: ‘I detest lukewarm Christians’ (Revelation 3:15-16). The reasons for lukewarmness may include, lack of awareness, lack of hope, fear of failure etc. The key question is how do we get closer to our God, and become Hot Christians, on fire. We need to ardently desire for an intimate relationship with God. We need to experience and connect with the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit. All men and women of God who achieve victory in their lives, have had a deep relationship with the Holy Spirit– who leads them in prayer, in taking decisions, in being corrected etc. The Word of God, or the Bible is also vital for us to know more about God, his love for us, the promises that he has given us and to give us hope, courage and peace. The Happy Families movement was started in Bangalore in 2011 by six families. The movement seeks to spread the love of God to more and more families. Happy Families is rooted in the Gospel and the teachings of the Catholic Church.

FAITH

On 9th March we had a Recollection led by CFM – Christian Family Movement. The Christian Family Movement is a national network of parish/neighborhood small groups of families. Through the use of available programming and the dynamics of small group interaction, Christian values are reinforced and families are encouraged to reach out in action to others. The CFM group consists of five to seven families with the adults meeting regularly in each other’s homes, or at the parish. Through the use of CFM’s many different programs, members discuss what they have observed in their own family or community, judge what they have seen in the light of Jesus’ teaching, and then act to change things for the better.

On 16th March we had a Recollection led by Br Victor of the ‘The Institute for World Evangelisation - ICPE Mission’. Br. Victor shared with the gathering how one could make full use of of the season of lent, even starting midway to change one’s way of life, resulting from spiritual conversion. He emphasised on the topic ‘The Need for the Renewal of the Mind’- from Romans 12:2, and even engaged the gathering through a practical exercise revealing to them the unrealised ability of the mind, and how God designed the mind to be the door through which we can enter the world of change. The evening concluded with a short time of prayer on surrender and consecration of the ‘thought-life’ to God, with added emphasis to constantly renew ones mind, of fear and doubt, which will help us much, to walk a triumphant Christian life.ICPE is a Catholic Mission made up of Christians committed to the goal of world evangelisation. The ICPE Mission is recognised as an International Association of Christ’s faithful with Pontifical Right from the Vatican.

On 23rd March we had a Recollection led by The Focolare Movement.Federico and Chiara from the Focolare Movement talked about the Focolare Movement being the ‘Work of Mary’. There are many ways of imitating Mary, but one is better than all the others, which is to imitate her, to do as she would do on earth. In some ways it allows her to come and live on earth once more. Therefore, without neglecting the other ways of honouring her, we must focus on this: imitating her in all phases of our life as she was in the various phases of her life – The Annunciation, The Advent and as Mary Desolate at the foot of the cross.

The Focolare Movement began with Chiara Lubich who was born on January 22, 1920 in Trent, Italy and died on March 14, 2008 in Rocca di Papa, Italy. It was in Trent, Northern Italy, 1944 that Chiara Lubich and her first few companions attended the Mass on the Feast of Christ the King. At the end of the Mass she and her friends recollected and reflected on a phrase they had heard during the Mass: “Ask me and I shall give you all the peoples and lands of the earth.” (Ps 2,8). They asked God to help them put this phrase into action by saying to God, ‘You know how to bring about unity. Here we are. Use us ‘.Today the Movement is present in 182 countries and has approximately 2 million members worldwide. The core of the Movement consists of more than 140 thousand animators across all the expressions of the Movement.
