The movie, Love Story, gave me one of the best set-ups I ever had for a homily, "Love is never having to say you are sorry." All of us in our 60s and 70s know that’s baloney. Somewhere, in our lives we have not only asked for forgiveness, we have probably begged on our knees for it. That's what saved our relationship. Now had they said “Love is never having to explain to you all my weaknesses,” that's a whole different kettle of fish. Or how about "Love is not going on and on about my weaknesses." Or "Love is forgetting about what a jerk I can be." It kind of reminds me of people who have “My Way” as one of their funeral songs. As the singer goes on “and I did it my way,” everyone nods their heads in agreement and it’s not a compliment. Of course even at this late stage in life we can 'fall' in love. You know, get so infatuated with someone you really start to believe you never have to say you are sorry. My mother had a boss who had been married five times. He even tried to hit on her at one point. He was in love with the idea of falling in love. Of course, he found that making a move on my mother was disastrous. He did have one adult relationship with a woman who he always went back to after every marriage disaster. My mother asked why he didn't marry her. You guessed the response, "Why would I ruin a perfectly good relationship?" The readings today center around love. Of course the ultimate expression of unselfish love is Jesus in his concern for his people. But I could fill ten thousand columns with examples of unselfish love, from great and famous people to little known but heroic lovers living in our midst. On your way home today define what love means to you and name the greatest lover you have ever known. And, speaking of unselfish love – Happy Mother’s Day.

Presider: Fr. James Cassidy Today we celebrate our youth and their mothers at the Gym Masses. Children and Youth Sunday and Mother’s Day will include solos by the Children’s Choir, music by the Club Band, and mothers and youth sharing their faith with their SJA family. Happy Mother’s Day!

The Sunday Morning Registration and Information Office is located in the Parish Center. In the office you may register to become a SJA parishioner; get program information; sign up for a program; and register to volunteer. The office is open after both of our Sunday morning liturgies.

Wedding Policies: Weddings at St. Joan of Arc are provided as a service to members of the parish community. Because of the large number of weddings, it is not possible to provide the services of a Presider or our facilities for people who are not registered parish-ioners. For a wedding to take place at SJA, it is necessary that one of the engaged couple be a registered member of the parish for at least six months before a date can be set. A date can only be scheduled by one of the priests after an initial interview with the engaged couple. A minimum of six months from the time the date is set to the wedding is necessary in order to complete require-ments. In cases where there has been a previous marriage ending in divorce, it is not possible to set the wedding date until notice of an annulment is in hand. FFI call Mary Ann at the Parish Center.

Emergency Response in Nepal: As Nepal begins to recover rom the tragic earthquake, your help is needed. Catholic Relief Services, in partnership with Caritas Nepal, will be aiding 15,000 families with emergency shelter, blankets, water treatment and hygiene kits. An initial commitment of $10 million has been made, and, because this region is known for earthquakes, CRS had prep-ositioned emergency aid in nearby Bihar, India so has been able to respond quickly. To learn more or donate, go towww.crs.org, and thank you.

Mother's Day Beginnings: In 1870, Julia Ward Howe issued the following proclamation, which became the foundation for a Mother's Day celebration. It is a prophetic call for peace:

"Arise, then, women of this day! Say firmly: Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.

We, the women of one country, Will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to

be trained to injure theirs. Let us solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means

whereby the great human family can live in peace."

We form the faith of our community through participation in prayer, liturgy, sacraments, education, community and works of justice.
