Theology on the Rocks

Eucharistic Adoration: Experience a Deep Peace in Jesus Eucharist Adoration is an ancient, prayerful devotion believed to date back as early as the 4th century with St. Basil. It is the coming in prayer before the Real Presence of God found in the exposed Blessed Sacrament. The Blessed Sacrament is exposed in a "monstrance" (gold stand) so that the Host is clearly visible to all who come to pray. The Eucharist is the greatest gift given to the Church, the abiding presence of Jesus who desires to feed us, heal us, strengthen us and mold us into his own body. At the Second Vatican Council, the Church fathers wrote “The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life.” (Lumen Gentium 11). This act of remaining in Jesus is an act that is done in silence. Silence sometimes is uncomforta-ble for people. We feel that if we are not saying something to God, we are not really praying. We are afraid that our silence will soon lead to our minds wandering; while our bodies may be in a posture of prayer, our brain is at the super-market or work or making lists of things we need to get done this day. Jesus desires us to rest in him: “Be still and know that I am God!” Our self-reliance leads to internal chatter. However, to have the Eucharist as a visible focus for our eyes allows us to be drawn back into a peace as we recognize that Jesus really is in charge of our lives. In that silence we find our minds, hearts and souls experienc-ing a deep peace that He alone can give. You are invited to spend time with Jesus. Our Adoration is on Wednesdays, 8:30 am—8:00pm. The Church also asks that there al-ways be someone present in the Church when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. We want to make sure that each hour of Adoration is covered by someone on a regular basis. As you pray this week, you may want to pray and ask the Lord if he is calling you to make a commitment to be so present in adoration. If you are interested in committing to a certain time each Wednesday to be present for Adoration, please call Joe or Mercedes Gonzales at 210.698.2195.

Pope Francis has a New Book! Pope Francis: Embrace of Hope, Compassion in Times of Illness is filled with the pope’s insight and inspira on for all

who face the test of sickness and illness. Pope Francis shows how hope is found in seeing and experiencing illness in the light of the Good News of Jesus Christ. He reveals how grace grows in mes of illness when:

• Chris ans bring the peace of Christ to the sick through service and care. • Difficult moments become the path to forge stronger rela onships with family, com-muni es, and with Christ. • Men and women in science cul vate and apply God’s gi of crea on for the treatment and cure of diseases, se ng free the op-pressed. • Christ sets one free, helps one endure, and allows suffering for the sake of a greater

Lifeteen’s 2018-2019 Theme

is Announced!

Relentless Father! The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that “in every time and in every place, God draws close to man.” God pursues us. God is continually chasing us, but not to harm us or for His own gain. God pursues us out of love. And God’s pursuit is not like the pursuit of others that might grow tired or give-up on us. God is relentless in seeking us out. We will break open this theme through our conferences, camps, and events throughout the year. God is our Relent-less Father and He has been seeking you yesterday, today, and up until your final breath. The challenge for all of us this year will be how we respond to this incredible pursuit. “Indeed, goodness and mercy will pur-sue me all the days of my life.” – Psalm 23:6s

MUCH-NEEDED PRAYER Each Christian needs half an hour of prayer each day, except when we are busy; then we need an hour. —St. Francis de Sales

daily circumstances of our lives, and to grow in under-standing of what we are to do and how we are called to act. We know who we are in God’s sight, and whose we are, as children of God. Today’s Readings: Jer 23:1–6; Ps 23:1–3, 3–4, 5, 6; Eph 2:13–18; Mk 6:30–34 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In today’s first reading, we hear through the prophet Jeremiah that God understands the need of the people for shepherds who will lead them to a place of spiritual depth and peace. In the Letter to the Ephesians, we hear that this desire that the people find peace in right relationship with God is for everyone. Jesus, the Good Shep-herd, leads the disciples to a deserted place to rest. They had just returned from their first time of mission, and Jesus understands that they need time away with him, to share their experiences and questions, and to find refreshment of body and spirit. Yet Jesus also recognizes the needs of the crowds who follow them to that deserted place. He knows that he is the peace for which they long. Sabbath Rest Sabbath. We hear the word, and many think of the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. Today, we hear Jesus say to the disciples, ‘Come away to a deserted place and rest a while.” This is the true spirit of sabbath—to take time away, to worship God, participate in Eucharist, to be re-freshed in body, mind, and spirit. Thought of in this way, sabbath is not an obligation but a priv-ilege, a gift rather than a burden. Making sab-bath begins with a commitment to put God first. That is what the shepherds that Jeremiah called for were to do, to lead the people to be people of and for God. This is what Jesus, the Good Shep-herd, leads us to do, and he shows us how to do this. Not only does Jesus take time away for prayer and to “rest a while,” he also spends time with the people who need him. In sabbath, we spend time with God, family, our faith commu-nity, and friends. And this spending time “with” helps us to re-orient our lives toward what is most important. From Sabbath to the rest of the week Taking sabbath to heart has a significant impact on the way in which we live our lives, practical-ly and spiritually. The practical part is evident on the surface. Setting aside time for Sunday Mass, quiet, and time with others requires plan-ning and commitment. There is a practical di-mension to the physical and emotional benefits of such time away from the stress and busyness of our daily lives as well. The spiritual impact of sabbath may take a little while to begin to perceive. When we put God first in our lives, everything else falls into place in a different, holier way. We begin to see God’s grace in the

THE GOSPEL Mark 6:30-34

They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them.

Only

yesterday,

the crowd had no answers or meaning.

Like sheep without a shepherd. They fled to

you.

Today the crowd is us.

Caretakers of the poor. Of the sick. We are the doctors,

immigrants and environmentalists.

But.

We still look for the way. People on the search. We flee to you, Jesus. Have pity on us.

Show us your way. Let us be today’s shepherds.

Decimosexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

¡YO NO!

Lecturas de hoy: Jeremías 23:1–6; Salmo 23:1–6; Efesios 2:13–18; Marcos 6:30–34 Copyright © 2005, World Library Publications.
