A stadium for Bordeaux

A novel stadium

Bright and open, the Matmut Atlantique is also elegant, inasmuch as one can use that word to describe such an imposing structure. Clean and understandable, its geometry gives and impression of monumentality and grace. One would be tempted to compare it to an ancient temple set atop its pedestal, but here the passageway blurs the boundaries between the interior and the exterior. Countless columns rising from the large staircases accompany the visitors’ comings and goings. The fusion between the steps and the columns stand as a gesture of welcoming and accessibility.

Particular attention was given to the structure’s integration into the larger Bordeaux landscape. The meticulous configuration and geometry of the bowl and the columns are the reflection of the landscape created by the surrounding trees and access roads. The stadium is designed for this specific space – an open and flat landscape in close proximity to the Fair Park which extends to the lake’s shores. The word “elegant” has become a depreciated term to describe architecture but imposes itself when referring to the urban and architectural heritage of Bordeaux. We never sought to inspire ourselves from the city’s historical quarters with their limestone edifices and monuments whose beauty takes your breath away. What we perceive as this city’s elegance stems in large part from the consistency of scale and materials as well as from a formal precision of great purity. It was not a matter of copying this but what we could gain from it valuable teachings.

The Matmut Atlantique was designed by the architectural firm of Herzog & de Meuron with the assistance of Groupe 6. Its construction was entrusted to two major players, the VINCI and FAYAT groups. This solid and perennial association guarantees the highest levels of expertise and know-how in the design and construction of the New Stadium. Herzog & de Meuron is a partnership jointly managed by five Senior Partners: Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, Christine Binswanger, Ascan Mergenthaler and Stefan Marbach. Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron founded their agency in Basel in 1978. Today, a team of 400 international collaborators work on projects across Europe, North and South America as well as Asia. The projects designed by Herzog & de Meuron range from the individual home to large scale urban works. The agency can be credited with numerous highly recognized public buildings, notably stadiums and museums as well remarkable private factories, offices and housing projects. The National Stadium in Beijing, the Allianz Arena in Munich, the Tate Modern in London, and social housing project on the Rue des Suisses in Paris are amongst the often quoted works. Numerous prizes have been awarded to Herzog & de Meuron including the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2001 along with the RIBA Royal Gold Medal and the “Praemium Imperiale, both in 2007.

A “bowl” for 42,115 people

With more than 42,115 seats, the bowl truly frames the playing field. Its geometry offers optimal visibility to all the spectators guaranteeing maximum modularity in terms of capacity and use. Polyvalent, the stadium is designed to host a rich and diversified programming: rugby and soccer matches but also spectacles, concerts and corporate events.

The bowl is made up of two superimposed stands divided into four sectors with a cover for protection from the inclement weather. The roof’s soffits, offering great visual homogeneity, concentrate one’s gaze onto the playing field while letting sunlight through. The structure’s roof is not visible from the inside so as to not distract the spectators’ attention. The simplicity and purity of the bowl and pedestal’s architecture guarantee the safety of the crowd’s flow as well as ease of orientation.

Pedestal, Bowl, Cover

A singular rectangular roof sits on top of the raised bowl. The choice of such a pure and quasi abstract shape is a clear and efficient response to the site’s natural conditions and to the principal flow of spectators from east to west.

This white rectangle seems to be projected towards the ground by a shower of slender columns. An undulating ribbon of concession stands and restrooms runs through this forest of columns, animated by the flow of the crowd. All at once dense and light, the structure forms an evanescent rectangular space through which one can make out the bowl’s sculpted silhouette.

This architecture imparts a strong identity to the Matmut Atlantique. . The diaphanous volume is oriented towards the larger landscape while its passagewayexpresses its openness and accessibility to all. One can guess, through its transparency, the activities and energy that will transform this site into a new neighborhood, alive and animated.

The passageway and its coil

Accessible from the East and West parvis by large staircases, the passageway, composed of an undulating coil, forms a belt around the playing field and houses eating establishments, restrooms and services. It establishes a link between the two stand levels and offers the possibility to the spectators to move about freely without leaving the stadium’s walls. It offers all at once views of the playing field towards the interior, and of the surrounding landscape towards the exterior.

DID YOU KNOW?A stadium adapted to the needs of persons with disabilities and reduced mobility

Equipped with 16 elevators, the Matmut Atlantique was designed to welcome persons with disabilities and reduced mobility. 125 seats and 125 additional seats for their guides are located in the passageway near the glass railings offering a perfect visibility onto the playing field as well as optimal security of the traffic flow.

At the Matmut Altantique, , no pit or fencing. The tiers’ first rows are situatedexactly 6, 5 meters away from the players’ sidelines. Safety barriers equipped withelastic cables prevent spectator access onto the field at the level of the North and South stands. Having proven itself at England’s famous Wembley stadium, the utilization of these materials is a safe bet recognized by international soccer bodies (FIFA, UEFA, FFF).

One meter high, the lower rim barriers allow for optimal visibility onto the playing field. Furthermore, in the case of crowd movement, access gates monitored by the stadium’s security control station open onto the field and allow the public to be directed towards the multiple building exits planned in case of evacuation.

Higher up, such as on the lodges’ level 2 and the passageway’s level 3, the barriers are larger and inverted, 90 cm high and composed of a glass surface. The utilization of glass here guarantees perfect visibility to 100% of the venue’s seats.

The work offers a perfect visibility from all parts of the infrastructure. This architectural requirement has already earned it the qualifier of “English style” stadium. This term brings to mind a visual comfort for all the spectators, a close proximity to the playing field as well as an ideal configuration of the stands for creating an atmosphere worthy of the most beautiful British stadiums. This reference makes its way into the very term used for the field’s safety barriers: “the Wembley safety barriers”.

DID YOU KNOW?Local know-howThe manufacturing and installation of the metal structures linked to public safety at the Matmut Atlantique are the work of ARESTALFER, a company from the Gironde located in Gradignan. All together, the local company has produced the equivalent of 3 km of handrails positioned along the flights of stairs as well as 500 m of glass safety barriers positioned on the higher level of the New Bordeaux Stadium.

A strategic location

Long ago, it was a large floodable area of 1,000 hectares; starting in the 60’s however, this perimeter became the object of infrastructural and great capital works: construction of the Aquitaine Bridge, draining of the swamps, putting in place an artificial 160 hectare lake, creation of the Fair Park, etc.

This urban planning led to the arrival of numerous administrations, companies and commercial activities as well as the emergence of a substantial hotel center.

In full boom, as illustrated by the creation of the eco-neighborhood of Ginko (the largest in France), Bordeaux-Lac has pursued its development of public works and major leisure activities (casino, international camping…)

The New Stadium’s location, with an overall surface area of 20 hectares, is at the heart of a major cultural, sports and leisure center for the Bordeaux region: golf, woods, sailing center, velodrome stadium…

Directly accessed by the region’s main roads and freeways, the work is located only 15 km from the Bordeaux-Mérignac airport. The extension of the B and C tramway lines directly connect the stadium to the city center and the St Jean station, adding to the existing bus network and self-service bicycles.

In terms of parking, the 6,000 spaces located in the Fair Park are reserved for the spectators of the New Bordeaux Stadium on the night of events. Between the floral park and the North Stand, 1,500 spaces are planned for VIP, persons with disabilities and reduced mobility, visitors and the media. In total, more than 8,500 free parking spaces are located just a few steps away from the Matmut Atlantique. Three large bicycle parking lots will also be made available to the spectators.

The Matmut Atlantique it situated in the Bordeaux-Lac neighborhood, on the left bank of the Garonne to the north of the city.

DID YOU KNOW?TO THE NEW STADIUM BY TRAMThe C Tram Line can transport nearly 10,000 spectators an hour on the night of matches, concerts and other events. The trains follow one another at a regulated interval of 2 min 30 sec, dropping off the spectators at the “Parc des Expositions/Stade” or the last stop on the C line, 500 meters away from the Matmut Altantique

The landscaping for the site and its surroundings was entrusted to Michel Desvigne, the French landscape artist having received the city planning Grand Prize in 2011. Here is what he has to say about his work :

“The stadium’s installation is nourished by a particular location: that of an area connected on the one hand to a high quality natural setting to be enhanced to the north, and to an urban landscaped framework to be reinforced to the south. The planning tied to the Stadium’s arrival marks an essential step in the realization of the wooded corridor of the North Rocade Sector provided for in the City Planning Charter of the City of Bordeaux with the forested strips which define an overall structure and organize the various spaces: the parvis, the parking and the ecological corridor. Additionally, natural bosques define the successive horizon lines and visual planes that combine or appear. The west parvis is the keystone to this landscape. The trees are inserted into large bands of natural lawn in turn held in mineral soil. Their east-west disposition preserves clear views of the Stadium and guarantees adequate qualities for intensive public use. Put into perspective, the whole constitutes a landscape in its own right.”

Located between the more than 30 hectare Floral Park and the 50 hectare Bordeaux woods, the site of the Matmut Atlantique is perfectly integrated into its environment.

The west parvis, with a surface area of 4 hectares, will host an events village with food services and activities on the nights of events.

DID YOU KNOW ?A sustainable approach

The stadium was conceived to limit its consumption thanks to a good insulation and a heating system for the interior spaces allowing to distribute evenly the temperature from one room to the other. Rain water is collected from the roof to water the lawn, insuring quasi self-sufficiency. 700 m² of solar panels are placed on the north stand’s roof. The stadium is self-sufficient in energy when in “stand-by” mode, that is to say when not hosting a major event.

The stadium driving jobs

Committed to driving employment insertion programs, the New Bordeaux Stadium’s works received 3,500 journeymen and carried out more than 72,000 hours of professional insertion during its construction period. In the management phase, around 1,000 persons will work on site during major events. The arena is thereby guaranteeing the creation of 500 jobs when holding events. Recruiting sessions have already begun and are being orchestrated by the French agency for recruiting.

Completed in 42 months, including 16 months for preliminary studies and 26 months of work, the construction of the Matmut Atlantique was orchestrated around 8 key stages. The project was delivered according to the planned schedule and without any delays.

During a year and a half, the New Stadium’s construction site had an on-site concrete production facility. Assuring flexibility and the reduction of the carbon footprint, the facility avoided the passage of 75 mixing trucks daily, thereby reducing bottlenecks on the big boulevards and the Bordeaux rocade. Working with the prefabrication zone at the north of the stadium, all of the 3,600 components used for the tiers were built in the Bordeaux-Lac area.

Key construction figures AN INNOVATIVE MIX OF CONCRETE/METALAside from the uniqueness of its architectural aspect, the Matmut Atlantique is made from a structure unprecedented in France which replaces the traditional and quasi exclusive use of concrete. The choosing of this process is not insignificant: it allows to considerably diminish the weight of the stadium thereby reducing the foundations and leading to a gain in time and costs. Metal, very present in the work, makes up the structure for the north and south stands, the backbone of the upper rim, the metallic roof framework and most of the lining: the underside of the bowl’s upper tiers, the cladding, the covering of the coil and all of the roofing’s cover. It’s the first time in France that a stadium has been realized with such a proportion of steel.

THE METAL FRAMEWORKThe work of Castel & Fromaget in the Gers, the framework is made up of two components: the lower stands and the north/south quarter bend, then the whole of the high stands and the roof. Only the lower east/west stands have a concrete structure (up until the 3rd level). Tests run in a wind tunnel at the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment (Scientific and Technical Centre for Construction) permitted the analysis of the wind’s power against the structure and guaranteed a good ventilation without jeopardizing the spectator’s comfort (drafts). This framework represents 12,000 tons of metal that is to say, nearly twice the weight of the Eiffel Tower. It is made up of 644 circular steel posts up to 37 meters high and 40,000 m² of aluminum composite lining materials.

DID YOU KNOW ?A framework made in the South-WestThe 12,000 ton framework was entirely produced in France, on 12 manufacturing, galvanizing and painting sites. The vast majority of this production originates in the South-West since 80% of its manufacturing was done within a radius of less than 200 km around Bordeaux in response to a logic of circular economy favoring a short supply chain.

THE ROOFThe arena’s roofing, with its cantilevered 44 meter roof, covers all of the spectators. Its 7° slope protects the spectators from the sun and inclement weather. It is composed of acoustic panels which allow for an ideal sound quality, whatever the nature of the event. Its installation necessitated the use of a crane unique in France (read opposite box). The roof’s lining was put in place 41 meters above ground thanks to a movable scaffolding positioned on the tiers of the upper rim allowing to install the roof’s lining all around the arena. For the second part of the roof, the extension above the tiers’ first rows, cherry pickers able to climb to 48 meters were positioned in the center of the playing field extending up to the height of the Boxes. The roof’s cover is partially made of metal sheets (for support), of insulation (to optimize its acoustic and thermal performance) and of membrane (for waterproofing reason). The front part of the roof in polycarbonate is translucent. The lining of the bowl’s underside is made of corrugated metal sheets that are perforated for acoustic reasons. In all, this multi layered membrane cover covers 25,000 m².

• 945 piles 22 meters deep for the foundations• 900 posts including 600 structural (to hold up the

building) and 300 decorative (running of cables)• 40,000 m² of aluminum composite panels to line the stadium• 3 km of railing around the stadium• 36 km of pipes to water and heat the pitch

• 42,115 seats for soccer (all sitting including 2,000 reserved forthe opponents’ supporters) – 41,212 seats for rugby (sitting) –44,683 seats for spectacles (sitting and standing)

• 14 general public access paths• 47 cm between each seat• 2 days to install the modular tiers around the playing field• iSlope of lower stand: 25°• iSlope of upper stand: 35°

DID YOU KNOW ?Installing the roof: a key moment in the constructionInstalling the roof was one of the most spectacular phases of the construction work. In order to bring it to term, a crane unique in France – reserved one year prior – arrived on the site. After 5 days of assembly, it performed its first lift on February 20, 2014, starting the roof’s installation over the western stand and moving clockwise. With a lift capacity of 600 tons, its assembly and installation required 50 semis. The operator cabin alone weighs 85 tons.

High technology sound and lights

A 21st century stadium3.

When the intensity reading for all of the lighting is measured, an average of the measured points is calculated. In order to honor the established contract, there must not exist a difference of more than 30% between the strongest and weakest point in all of the stadium’s bowl. This criteria takes into account vertical lighting as well as horizontal lighting so as to avoid too great a shadow from the players on the game’s surface area. This measure is destined to insure the visual comfort of the players, spectators and viewers.

All in all, 308 points of measurement were read for the vertical lighting and 77 points for the horizontal lighting. These measurements are taken when the lines are drawn on the playing field.

The Matmut Atlantique is made up of 556 lamps broken down into 3 categories:

1.The category corresponds to soft lamps, that is to say 284 waterproof lamps which light up traffic on the technical bridge as well the underside of the upper stands’ tiers.

2.The “arenavision” category of lamps, 216 in total, which allow to light upspecific areas on the playing field.

3.The projector category, these are “powervision” lamps totaling 56 which lightup the entire crowd of spectators both on the upper and lower stands.

The management of the light flow between the soft lamps, arenavision and powervision allows for an extensive or intensive luminosity depending on the chosen anchor spots. A software created by PHILIPS is in charge of the calculations, perfectly regulating both the linearity and continuity of the whole system.

Very precise norms govern new generation stadiums for very high level sports. To face the constraints of televised retransmissions, the FIFA et the UEFA require a light output of 2,300 lux when put into service with a uniformity index of at least 70%.

Furthermore, the stadium has two giant 70 m² screens situated under the roof and about 250 46” screens spread out in various reception areas. The Matmut Atlantique is the first connected stadium in France with HD WIFI. A relay antenna for 3G/4G and 450 terminals permit access.

The length of the players’ entrance in the new arena is much different than that of Chaban which is a 120 meter long hallway. Today the players will only have to travel about ten meters in the New Stadium, thereby going from the longest entrance in Europe to the shortest.

A hybrid playing field

The arena has a “hybrid” lawn, that is to say semi synthetic and semi natural equipped with the AirFibr technology created by NATURALGRASS. What is truly synthetic is not the grass, which is completely natural, but the substrate on which it sits. It sits on a substrate sized XXL and 15 cm thick. Made up of fine silica sand presenting a compact surface, cork beads allowing the absorption of the athletes’ footholds and of synthetic fibers insuring a strong ground adherence. This new generation substrate considerably improves the athletic qualities of the players, the spectacles’ quality and further reduces the risk of injuries. There are in all 450 billion small synthetic fibers present in the substrate.

The process of bringing together all these components while seeding grass is novel in France. Increasing in this manner the resistance and rooting of the grass, this technique is ideal for a new generation multifunctional arena. Seeded 6 months before the first game of the Football Club des Girondins de Bordeaux, the playing field presented during its first match a root system 20 cm deep. Just like the New Stadium, the arena is equipped with a playing field compatible with all types of event.

In the soccer and rugby jargon, one often uses the famous phrases “green carpet” or “like a true pool table” to symbolize the pitch. The playing field is a key element of the Matmut Atlantique made of a “new generation” playing surface.
