He’s passionate, determined and adventurous. That’s why space legend, Neil Armstrong inspired a team oftalented students from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) to win their fifth Future Retail Challengeaward. 

The Future Retail Challenge aims to promote future talent in the retail industry and allows students fromaround the world to bring fresh ideas into the world of retail.

This was PolyU’s eleventh consecutive year in the competition and this year, they were up against five otheruniversities from New York, London, Amsterdam, Moscow and Turin. As a long-term sponsor, Li & Fung

provided financial support and expert advice in the months leading up to the competition with SCS3President Sean Coxall and SVP Richard Lee as their mentors. Previous mentors of the program include SCS6Executive Director Sean Looram and Cobalt Fashion Managing Director Gabriel Foo.

“It is always an honor to work with Li & Fung. Without their contribution and commitment, winning could nothave been possible," said Dr. Stacy Lee, one of the project leaders. "Our final year students did a great jobespecially juggling between the competition and their studies.” 

This year’s challenge’s theme was ‘Rebel Retail’ taking iconic figures from the 1960s and early 1970s andapplying their values and goals to create a new brand that will appeal to today’s Generation Z or Millennial consumers. Armstrong’s rebelliousness as the first astronaut to land onthe moon gave inspiration for PolyU to develop a gamified mobile application named Halotrek that aims toempower solo millennial travelers.  

Millennials are the fastest growing demographic of travelers. Three out of every four millennials would ratherbuy an experience than a material possession, and for most that means travel. In the past five years, 17% ofadults took a holiday on their own and that percentage is only predicted to increase particularly amongmillennials.  

Equipped with AR glasses, Halotrek enables users to fully immerse themselves into a destination, unlockhidden cultural stories and earn points by completing missions - something you would not get to experienceas a regular tourist!

After hours of preparation and rehearsals, team PolyU presented their business proposal in front ofhundreds of retail industry veterans at the World Retail Congress in held in Amsterdam and immediately wonthe hearts of the judges. To top it all off, 1960s fashion icon Twiggy presented the award at the ceremony.

“I think it's really commendable that a university from Hong Kong has been able to stand out and win somany times in the competition,” said Sean. “Other universities had great ideas but there were also a lot ofgaps, whereas PolyU really nailed all the details and told the story,” said Sean

While they were in Amsterdam, the team also got to tour one of our customer’s offices, PVH Corp whichmanages a diversified portfolio of brands including Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein and Arrow.  

After returning to Hong Kong, Sean and Richard paid the students a visit at the university and was personallythanked by the Dean of Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles, Prof. Wing-tak Wong.
