DEVELOPMENTA SYMPATHETIC
UNIQUE CITYIN A
Few cities in the world can match Cambridge for its heritage, opportunity and vibrancy.
And no other landmark Cambridge site deserved to be transformed more – with one eye sympathetically looking to the past and the other fixed firmly on the future.
The result? Ceres. An exciting, ambitious and considerate development in CB1 that successfully blends tradition with modernity – creating top end residences that raise the bar for quality living spaces in the city.

The CB1 redevelopment consciously reflects a European model – where people work, socialise and shop in their community – and covers 25 acres, the equivalent of 15 football pitches.
Throughout CB1 there are apartments to suit every lifestyle and life stage – 19 stylish apartments will be created when converting the iconic Foster's Mill, the centrepiece of the development. There’s also a public park, stunning landscaping, a proposed 120-bed hotel, nursery, gym, modern transport interchange, retail space and commercial district.
So, if you’re looking to be part of a regeneration project – one that offers a new gateway into the heart of Cambridge with its endless opportunities to discover, learn and relax – CB1 is the answer.
A new gateway to Cambridge – befitting of its world-class status – will transform the Station Road area.
The new state-of-the-art transport interchange and magnificent new Station Square will sit comfortably alongside the preserved Grade II listed railway building and distinctive Foster's Mill.
Through the square and to the left are the striking Ceres apartments, whereas the wider development opens up in all directions – with its shops, open spaces, public art, hotel and prestigious offices.
This is a vibrant, dynamic environment – the perfect place to set up home and live life to the full. It’s also the gateway to everything Cambridge has to offer.

CB1 DESIgN VISIONCelebrated, award-winning architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners’ pedigree is plain to see. The Channel 4 Headquarters and Lloyds of London buildings are notable built projects, while eagerly awaited completions include the British Museum extension and 3 World Trade Center.
The practice used their 30 years’ experience when defining the CB1 masterplan. Its aim? To produce a clearly defined, accessible development, whose distinct areas are characterised by the buildings that surround them. Architects Pollard Thomas Edwards are transforming this vision into reality. The new Station Square is at the heart of CB1, while the historic Foster's Mill and station building will be retained – new complementing old.
CB1 LaNDSCaPINgLandscape architects Robert Myers Associates’ vision was to create a publicly accessible green open space that connects various parts of CB1 via smaller green spaces. The park’s robust and meticulous design can accommodate all sorts of recreation – active and passive – for residents, visitors and workers of all ages.
Various tree species, shrubs and ground cover will link and give character to the different spaces, while strong tree lines and groupings will be used to frame views, subdivide space and create shade. Specific planting will also provide habitat with a high degree of ecological connectivity both within CB1 and to sites adjacent to it.
CB1 PUBLIC aRTPublic art has been commissioned throughout CB1 to provide a ‘cultural contribution’ to Cambridge and the region. Hill Residential commissioned Jem Finer, for example, a UK artist, musician and composer.
Jem’s contribution, ‘Supercomputer’, was inspired by Cambridge mathematician James Conway and will sit near the Ceres apartments. It is a functioning ‘computer’ sculpture made from a series of beautifully constructed and designed pipes, and will be enclosed in a glass-fronted pavilion akin to the mainframe computers of the 1970s. Percussion instruments of a bell-like nature will play at certain times of the day – creating new compositions over a 179-year period.

HISTORYIN
EIgHT NINE
The imposing Foster's Mill building was built in 1896 for the wealthy Foster family who were merchants and bankers.
Stepped roofs, elaborate gables and a prominent castellated water tower originally topped its restrained colonnade architecture, so eloquently designed by Calder and Kitchen of Hull.
Today, this important Cambridge landmark is a rare example of pre-twentieth century industrial architecture – the reason why its distinct silhouette has been retained.
TEN
Cambridge. It’s a city of many faces – academic, commercial, cultural. But now there’s a new, yet old, face on the block, Ceres.
Carefully and lovingly restored to her former glory, this beautiful bronze statue – the impressive work of sculptor William Bloye – will have pride of place in the beautifully landscaped park, just metres from where she originally stood.
Fittingly, as the Goddess of Agriculture and Fertility, Ceres is the perfect symbol of the rebirth and growth of the historic area that the mill, and CB1 as a whole, occupy.

Ceres has a real sense of energy and community. Whether it’s the high spec apartments themselves or the spacious park, piazza and ‘pocket’ parks, all have been meticulously designed and landscaped so you can be active or relaxed, social or alone. To be yourself.
Architecturally, Ceres has its own unique character too. One that complements Cambridge’s traditional charm, by fusing contemporary design with the heritage of Foster's Mill and the station building.

THE DESIGN OF THE CERES APARTMENTSOne striking feature of the apartments is the balconies and terraces. Every apartment has an outdoor space, a terrace or a balcony that ‘pops out’ to catch sunlight and offer full or partial views of the park or the piazza. Penthouses, on the other hand, are purposefully set back – their private terraces offering unfettered park views.
THE PARKThis flexible, multi-purpose space is sub-divided into various areas by the effective and dramatic use of landscaping and height. This allows for both relaxation and recreation. The main open space and children’s area is set below the rest of the park and creates an informal ‘amphitheatre’ for play and more active pursuits.
An impressive array of trees and plants adds seasonal interest, enhances biodiversity and gives distinct character to different areas.
THE POCKET PARKSEquivalent to three sheltered ‘front’ gardens to the four residential blocks, these are smaller open spaces that act as a calm backdrop from the bustle of Station Square – and are ideal for relaxing and meeting people.
THE PIAZZALocated at the northern end of the four blocks, the piazza acts as an antechamber between the park and Station Square. Think café culture, coffee and chats.

This stunning collection of studio, one and two bedroom apartments have been carefully designed with layouts that can cater for differing lifestyles.
The unique balconies, large picture windows and orientation of the apartments mean that the visual divide between inside and outside is cleverly blurred. This offers a sense of space and a connection to the outside that few modern apartments can deliver.

In the 13th century, a group of monks moved from Oxford to Cambridge, seeking a more tranquil place to study. So began the intellectual heritage of the city. Eight hundred years later, Ceres and the surrounding buildings play on the city’s architectural heritage – drawing on the past, while looking to the future.

Cambridge University is one of the world’s leading universities – and is part of the city’s DNA. Its courses are as diverse as the architectural character of its colleges. Outstanding in both respects.
kINg’S COLLEgEWorld famous for its academic achievements as well as its chapel, choir and Christmas Eve service. Famous alumnus: John Maynard Keynes.
QUEENS’ COLLEgEA centre for learning for over 550 years, the college’s two halves are joined across the River Cam by the famous Mathematic Bridge. Famous alumnus: Stephen Fry.
MagDaLENE COLLEgENoted for its ‘traditional’ style, this college boasts a well-regarded candlelit formal hall, where students dine every evening. Famous alumnus: Samuel Pepys.
TRINITY HaLL COLLEgEOne of the prettiest colleges, Trinity Hall has an atmosphere of intimacy, tradition and social spirit. Famous alumni: Stephen Hawkins and Andrew Marr.
Internationally renowned for its knowledge-based micro-economy, Cambridge lives and breathes business – offering career-driven individuals access to unrivalled employment opportunities.
The majority of the Cambridge workforce is employed in academia, healthcare and scientific research. As a result, the city
has become the European hub for these sectors.*
Its aptly named answer to California’s Silicon Valley, ‘Silicon Fen’, consists of many global high-tech and IT companies. Organisations such as Napp, Abcam, CSR, ARM, CamSemi, Jagex and Microsoft are all proud to call Cambridge their home.
The CB1-based Microsoft Research laboratory is the first the company has launched outside of the United States.
With its educated business community, Cambridge is the perfect base for long-term career growth. And, understandably, a desirable place to set up home.
