Byron Samuels, em-barks on a new chapterin his career with hisappointment as headmen’s basketball coachat Florida A&M Univer-sity.
He comes to FAMU fromthe University of Geor-gia, where he was theBasketball OperationsCoordinator, a role hehad served in since Juneof 2013.
While at Georgia,Samuels directed a num-ber of tasks, includingoversight of the players’day-to-day schedulesand their academicperformance, as well asassisting with theprogram’s on-campusrecruiting efforts, sum-mer camps and commu-nity outreach.
A native of Winston-
Salem, N.C., Samuels hasfashioned an extensivecoaching resume span-ning 11 schools in 26years. His career experi-ences include threehead coaching posts,two at four-year schools,and one in the juniorcollege ranks.
Samuels’ first headcoaching job came atMid-Eastern AthleticConference memberHampton University.During his two-year stint(1995-97), he helped thePirates with their transi-tion to NCAA Division Istatus.
His teams broke 14 teamand individual records,and both of his recruit-ing classes were rankedNo. 1 in the MEAC.
Samuels left Hampton in1997 to join his collegecoach, Jerry Green, asan assistant on Green’sstaff at Tennessee. Ineach of their four yearsat UT, the Vols earnedNCAA Tournamentberths, highlighted byan SEC co-champion-ship and a Sweet 16appearance in 2000.
Samuels was the headcoach at Radford Uni-versity from 2002-07after serving one seasonthere as an assistantcoach. His tenure withthe Highlanders in-cluded an appearancein the league’s tourna-ment championshipgame, as well as severalplayer and team acco-lades, both on the courtand in the classroom.
Over the entirety of hiscoaching career,Samuels helped guidesix teams to post-seasonbids. In addition to thefour Tennessee squads,teams at WashingtonState and Tulsa reachedearned NIT berths..Prior to his stint at Geor-gia, Samuels served two

Before coming to UGA,Samuels founded a non-profit mentoring organi-zation, and was a boardmember and area repre-sentative for the Fellow-ship of Christian Ath-
letes for two years.

For one, there is a newcoach manning thehelm of the RattlerProgram, as coachingveteran ByronSamuels brings animpressive resumereplete with experi-ence, to bear in hisnew assignment.
Samuels, who washired in July, faces an
unenviable task of re-building the RattlerProgram under theshadow of an NCAApostseason ban due tothe team’s AcademicProgress Rate (APR)performance the pastfour years, a ban whichincludes them beingineligible for the MEACTournament as well.FAMU’s new coach willalso face the tall task ofbuilding a roster fromscratch, as all six pro-jected returnees fromthe 2013-14 squad leftthe program when the
NCAA sanctions wereannounced. But Samuels, whoseextensive resume in-cluded a two-year stintat MEAC memberHampton from 1995 to1997 as theytransitioned from Divi-sion Two to DivisionOne, as well as a five-year run as the headcoach at Radford (Va.)University from 2002 to2007, knows a littleabout coming in newand having to rebuild. “We are taking a posi-tive approach to this
