Prez Sez
I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and
are enjoying the New Year’s festivities.
I for one will be glad to be out of 2016 and
am looking forward to 2017, getting my
strength back and joining in with the many
activities available to us in this community. It
was a year where we lost too many friends
and neighbours but where the community stepped up and
helped remember them.
I would ask you to be careful when walking in the community
due to snow and ice. If there are areas you feel are dangerous
please report them to Frontier’s office and the Board.
I look forward to working with you in this New Year.
Bryan West, President WOLRA
Below message is from Doug Little, Vice-President WOLRA on
behalf of Bryan West
The WOLRA Fiscal Policy, Nominations and Election Policy and
the Absentee Voting Policy have all been completed and are
now on our website. The notable change is that the Annual
General Meeting will be held in July, not August. This is so that
the annual operating can be approved in July to cover July
expenses. Board elections will take place on the same day as
the June General Meeting so candidates need to make their
intentions known in April and May (there will be 4 positions
coming to term). Lastly, Ken Killingbeck has researched, and the
Board has approved, a software that will provide confidential
electronic absentee voting – thus fulfilling the requirement of the
Absentee Voting Policy.

The Membership Committee is busy preparing the Membership Policy that we hope will be
approved and in place by May. Similarly, the Dispute Resolution Policy is also being developed
for an April/May approval. If you would like to be considered to be on the committee preparing
the Dispute Resolution Policy, please let me know.
Since the Board will be locally shorthanded for the next three months, the February General
Meeting has been cancelled. The next General Meeting will be April 11. The Board will continue
to function from afar, so if an issue arises that you want to refer to the Board, please email us
Snow plowing and removal has been excellent so far this year. Cautious reminder is that snow
melts and refreezes in the evening, so be careful.
Wishing you all a great 2017!
Board Sez As the end of the festive Christmas season fades behind us, the advent of the
New Year serves as a reminder of how much we have to be thankful
for. Sometimes we forget that and become focused only on the things we
feel are not right in our world. So we’d like to thank all the wonderful people
here in our community who have helped to make the past year so great here
at Wellington-on-the-Lake and in our broader community of the Town of
Wellington.
Thank you to all those activity coordinators who organize and run the myriad of activities here in
our community: from physical fitness activities to indoor and outdoor sports, swimming and
dancing; from arts and crafts to card games and bingo; from music to theatre…the list seems
endless – isn’t it wonderful? Thanks to the people who take on special events, such as the Trivia
Challenge, the Garage Sale, Dragon Boating, the Car Rally, the Arts & Crafts Sale and Harvest
Hoedown. And thanks to all the good folks who ran Coffee Mornings for our pleasure this year
and our Celebration of Life Committee who help us in our time of need.
More recently, thank you to all those who contributed to the Children’s Christmas Stocking Fund
under the leadership of Jodi Wied; the Christmas Cheer baskets, coordinated by Suzanne West
and Bea Howse; to Kate Brookfield and her fellow Grannies for helping orphaned children and
their grandmothers in Africa; and to Micheline Lortie, Tom Dietzel, Diane Dumais and the Sing
Noel singers who with help from many of our residents and clubs raised over $2300 to contribute
to the Storehouse Children’s Fund.
Thanks also to Roy Goostrey for organizing our Canada Day and Pumpkinfest parades and more
recently, to Finn Madsen, Nancy Barton and Rolf Hagen for organizing our Christmas Parade
entry. To Nancy for leading the great group of kazoo players on the float and organizing its
decorating and to Lawrence Northway for purchasing much needed tires for the wagon, for
pulling it in the parade and for improving our WOLRA banner so that Bob Ness and Eric Muise
could help me carry it in the Santa Claus parade on December 3rd. Santa really liked the E-Biker
elves, especially Rene St. James in his tights! Thanks also to all those who helped to decorate the

wagon, hand out candy to the children and treats to all the doggies along the route, to all who
turned up to cheer us on and to anyone else who contributed.
Thanks to Helene and Ian Cameron for organizing two fabulous Christmas Dinner/Dances on
December 2nd and 3rd and to Doug & Brenda Little and Olena Varych & Brian King for organizing
another great New Year’s Eve party. To all those who helped with decorating the hall, room
setups, door duties and cleaning up after each event…and to our A/V Special Project
Group: Eric Grimshaw, Nick Kohut (now retired), Kevin Hanbury and Ian Cameron whose great
rework of our audio visual systems have improved the way we deliver the electronic needs for all
these special events.
And to Pam Smith and her Editorial Board (Brian Beasant, Diane Dumais, Lynne Lamb and Al
Smith) for producing our monthly Neighbourhood News, our Bylaw & Policies Committee for
walking us through a daunting task, our talented Webmaster, Ken Killiingbeck for everything he
does, our WOTL Email Coordinator, Gerry Ippersiel, our Membership and Welcome Committees,
our Board members for their time and dedication to the job, and last but not least, our Site
Administrator Renie Thompson and staff for doing their best to meet our ongoing needs.
All of these persons and many others we have not named here have and continue to contribute
to the quality of our lives and our social life here at Wellington-on-the-Lake. Thank you and let’s
all enjoy 2017!

Housekeeping – Rec Centre TABLECLOTHS
When tablecloths are borrowed for events, please make
sure that when washing they are double checked and
stain free before returning. There have been some returns
with stains still intact. It’s not fair for the next user(s). Thank
You.
INDOOR SHOES
We humbly request that when you come for activities
at the Rec Centre that you bring/wear inside shoes,
and not wear winter boots in all the activity rooms,
especially in the Card Room, Yoga Room, the Billiard
Room, Exercise Room and if possible the Main
Hall. Need to keep salt, dirt and wet out of these rooms as the floors
are being used by some groups. It’s just good housekeeping. Thank
You.

Upcoming Coffee Mornings If you have never been to a WOTL Coffee Morning
(held alternate Saturday mornings at 9:30 a.m.) why
not give it a try? Get a donut and coffee for just a
buck and a chance to mingle with your neighbours.
Saturday, the 7th of January, is CANCELLED.
Saturday, the 21st of January, the WESTs will be hosting.

The Classical Music Club News (Formerly known as The Opera Club) In January there will be two presentations:
1. On an experimental basis, on January 8th @ 1:30 p.m. in the Main
Hall, we will present a musical potpourri of orchestral performances;
each one of 10-20 minutes duration with a bit of ballet thrown in.
This, being a departure from the traditional opera performances,
will be BYOB. The program is approximately 90 minutes duration plus
half-time intermission.
2. As a change in pace and by request, on
January 22nd @ 1:30 p.m. in the Main Hall,
we will present Gilbert & Sullivan’s light
opera “The Pirates of Penzance” starring,
believe it or not, Kevin Kline & Angela
Lansbury. This is in movie format, as
opposed to a stage production, and is a
lot of fun. It will run 1hour 52 minutes with
a half-time intermission during which
refreshments will be available.
*Given the current situation, any help with
setting up for these performances would be
most welcome. Come & enjoy!
Wishing you all a healthy, safe & very happy 2017.

Super Bowl Pot-Luck Party February 5th Once again there will be a super bowl pot-luck dinner
party in the Rec Centre hosted by the Evans’ and the
Silvers’ for your final football fix of the year. There will be
games that require little to no skill for your enjoyment. If
last year was any indicator there will be some fantastic
food presented by some of the best cooks in the county
to tickle your palate. Of course it is a BYOB and snacks which you can
share if you so desire. For those of you who just enjoy a party and could
care less about the game there will be things to do while you enjoy the
company of likeminded souls. There will be a Loonie charge levied to
cover the cost of our beautiful decorations and wonderful prizes. Doors
will open at 4:30 and kickoff is at 6:30. Here’s hoping that we see you
there for a fun time.

Thank You from the Library Volunteers The Library volunteers would like to take this
opportunity to thank all of those people
who donated books during the past year
for others to read and to those who
partake of our program. Without you there
would be no need for our little Library. Here
is just an example of the generosity that
happens here on a regular basis: On
December 22nd there were 16 “new” books donated for our reading
pleasure. In total that day there were 16 new and 36 returned books to
put away. Well done. Here’s hoping that everyone has a Happy New
Year and keep reading in 2017.

Healing/Meditation Circle January 17th - 5:15 - 6:15 in the Card Room
Our healing/mediation circle with Roz Bound will be a
safe space - for silence, reflection and support within a
like-minded community. It can be large or small -
everyone who comes is meant to be there. There will be
a short guided meditation, silent time, and an opportunity to send our
natural healing out beyond our circle. It will be a peaceful hour, a
pause in the anxiety and sadness that often accompanies our days, or
a chance to just be still and go within. You can let Roz know you are
coming, which helps with the number of chairs in the circle – but if you
come at the last minute that is perfectly fine too. Those people who
are there are meant to be there.
If you have any questions at all please call me at x5414 or
email [email protected].

Cathy’s Yoga While any yoga class has its own therapeutic benefits, the
therapeutic classes that I teach are designed to not only to
give you the experience of yoga with its advantages of
increasing flexibility, strength and balance, but also offer up
focus to your own needs. Understanding the various
challenges that people within the class are experiencing, I teach
techniques that can be practiced to reduce and manage symptoms
as well as offer tools to help change attitudes toward your health.
My Winter Yoga Classes begin on January 10th and run through to
March 15th. Space is limited! Don`t delay in getting in touch with me to
reserve your space. Feel free to join in even if you plan to be away for
a period during this time.
Tuesday 9:00-10:30 a.m., Card/Craft Room, Therapeutic Gentle (Level I);
Wednesday*New Time* 2:30-4:00 p.m., Card/Craft Room, Therapeutic
Gentle (Level I);
Wednesday*New Time* 4:15-5:45 p.m., Card/Craft Room, Therapeutic
Finding Your Balance (Level II).
Therapeutic Gentle (Level I): A gentle movement class that offers yoga
postures with modifications, including fine tuning to individual physical
abilities to help build strength and range of motion. In this class, chairs
are used to support you through standing and balance poses as well as
some of the seated poses. (Note: the capability of getting down onto
and up off of the floor is required).
Therapeutic Finding Your Balance (Level II): The chairs disappear now
as you learn to move within your pain free range of motion and
discover more fluidity and freedom in your movements. Tailor this class
to suit your own ability. Each pose is introduced with choices. You
decide where your challenge lies by listening to your body and being
mindful of its messages.
Drop-in space varies from week to week. If you are interested in
experiencing a class to see what it`s like before committing, please do
get in touch with me and I will find a space for you.

Christmas 2016 Santa Claus Parade Recap
WOTL was, once again,
a large part of the
Christmas parade with
the kazoo band on a
sparkly float, the walkers
handing out candies
and dog treats and the
E-bikers in their colourful
costumes. Many
compliments were heard
along the way as to how
much enjoyment we
bring. Needless to say,
we have so much fun as
well.
One little girl was so
enthralled by the sound of the kazoos that she told her mother that she
was going to ask Santa for one. Elsie Wiersma, her grandmother, called
Roy Goostrey to ask him where she could purchase a
kazoo. Unfortunately, ours were ordered online but Roy managed to
"permanently borrow” one of ours and now, this little girl will truly believe
in Santa when she finds a kazoo under her tree.

If the Christmas Dinner/Dances are to continue, a Chairperson and

events such as these would not happen.
I would also like to give a big thank you to Donna & Bryan Traynor

RV Parking at Wellington on the Lake
Leasehold residents were granted free parking just off
the Belleville Road (County Rd.2) just north of County
Rd.1 by the creation of a lot for this purpose by
Sandbank/Frontier as per the guarantees within their
lease with Daimler Homes.
For those residents who do not already have
adequate R V parking arrangements elsewhere,
through the cooperation with Lakeshore Farms, the
Channell family have made Sandbank Homes
residents an excellent RV parking area. Parking an RV for a year costs
$500 for a 20 foot spot where you can park an RV, boat, trailer, etc.
To further help, if you have visitors coming to visit you with their
RV/trailer/boat, the Channells will allow temporary parking in the RV
parking. The charge for this is $20 a day. Pursuant to by-law restrictions,
overnight sleeping in a trailer/RV in the parking lot will not be permitted.
Please contact Tim Channell at 613-969-
2497 for payment arrangements or drop
by Lakeshore Farms Market during
business hours 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. April thru
December 23rd.

VACATIONING VICARIOUSLY
Getting High in the Mountains of Ecuador
As some of you know Sheila and I recently returned from 5
weeks travelling in Ecuador, South America.
Why Ecuador? Before our retirement move to Wellington
we had flirted with the idea of spending a few years in
another country. We did not follow through with this idea
but Ecuador had come up as one of these places and had
tweaked our interest.
The Andes mountains run down the centre of Ecuador and
we started at one end in the bustling capital Quito and
worked our way south with several stops along the way.
Quito sits over 9000 feet above sea level and is surrounded by mountains and several
volcanoes (mostly inactive). The scenery is breath taking – as is the thin air. Some memorable
moments include:
- Stepping from the crowds, noise and pollution of Quito into the serene calm of old
Spanish churches with their huge gold plated and ornately decorated alters.
- The many bright birds of the cloud forest. We had toucans feeding right outside our
window at one jungle lodge
- Colourful markets with all kinds of exotic fruits being sold by peasant farmers dressed in
their traditional clothing and felt hats.
- Travelling on overheated buses with the driver racing hell for leather along switchback
mountain roads sometimes through the cloud fog. Being “entertained” by violent
movies and a succession of vendors coming aboard to hawk ice creams, a variety of
food products, face creams, etc.
- Climbing a volcano way up in the clouds and having vicuna (alpaca relatives) step out
of the fog and onto our path.
- Finding ourselves at a folk dancing event that continued through the afternoon with a
variety of exuberant dances and dancers in colourful costumes.

November at 7 p.m., a vote was taken on the moving of the regular meeting
night from the Friday night to Sunday night at the regular time 7 to 9 p.m. during
the winter months, starting on January 8th. The Bid Eucre meeting would be held
in the Card Room as these meetings would have fewer members in attendance.

Friends – Please Be Careful!
I went to a holiday part last night, I had a few beers, followed by a few cocktails,
followed by a few shots…
I still had the sense to know that I was over the limit. That’s when I decided to do what I
have never done before; I took a cab home.
Sure enough, there was a police road block on the way home, and since it was a cab,
they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident. This was both a relief and a
surprise because I had never driven a cab before. I don’t even know where I got it from
and now that it is in my garage, I don’t know what to do with it.
Editor’s note: Found the above on Facebook…Marg Graham had ‘Shared’ it. I laughed
so hard that I decided it was a perfect space filler!
