Prez Sez So spring is here! Easter bunny was eaten, snow tires are off, or about to be, and we see people walking in the community with these incredible tans. Welcome back to neighbours who left us to fend for ourselves in this great white north. That means lots of activities will be starting up again and lots of help will be needed, so step up and get involved and enjoy life. Secondly, as the weather gets nicer, and the sun shines later, residents take up outside walking rather than inside sitting. So the message to you all LOUD AND CLEAR – SLOW DOWN AND WATCH OUT FOR PEDESTRIANS. They don’t run as fast as they used to!

I would like to draw your attention to some upcoming events. The Annual WOLRA Garage Sale at the Rec Centre on May 7th, and the annual Park Activity Information Day (PAID) on May 28th. Also, the Relay for Life Cancer Walk on Friday June 10th, in Picton. Kevin Hanbury will coordinate the participation of Wellington on the Lake residents for this year. We will revive a tent presence and encourage potential walkers to contact Kevin to get registered.

The Board has been very active investigating options and opinions on moving forward with some of our longstanding issues. I would like to stress I continue to try to work cooperatively with Daimler, Frontier and Sandbank to find resolutions to our wishes. We all try to work toward a better living environment. We feel we will be able to report progress at the next General Meeting.

We are also working on a couple of presentations to residents at special events. We have been approached by RBC to put on a presentation regarding Wills, Power of Attorney and Choosing an Executor. Another possible presentation we are trying to organize is one that talks about home safety, home maintenance, household finances, etc. We hope to have confirmations and dates by the next newsletter.

Our Maintenance Meeting with Frontier was held to go over outstanding maintenance and improvement issues. From that meeting Frontier has set the end of April for the installation of lighting on the overflow parking lot. A stand-alone Resale sign for the grounds of the Rec Centre is to be installed by May 1st. Cleaning and upgrades to facilities were discussed and will be looked at by Frontier within the next 60 days.

Other topics discussed concerned issues that will reappear with the coming of spring and summer and how to get ready for them. The General Meeting scheduled for Tuesday April 12th, is cancelled due to the majority of Directors unable to attend due to other commitments. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Bryan West, President, WOLRA

Board Sez While there was no General Meeting in March, the Board met several times during the month and the following represents a recap of the points of general interest not referenced in the Prez Sez. Both the Nomination Committee (Kate Brookfield, Robin Cuthbert and Christine Searle) and the Finance Committee (Jim Atchison, Eric Grimshaw and Christine

Searle) are currently working on their respective policy papers as part of the larger Policy Manual Revision Project. Details will be shared once the Board has had a chance to review their efforts. Per the E-Comm message recently distributed, the Nomination Committee is actively seeking interested parties to fill a number of positions on the Board that will become vacant at the end of June. While the positions are unpaid from a monetary perspective, the payback for taking an active role in this community is well worth it. From a financial perspective, revenues in February totaled $676.15 (newsletter advertising, scotch-tasting, calendars, memberships, coffee & donuts and 50/50 draw), expenses for the same period totaled $749.90 (kitchen supplies, office supplies, printing, audio/visual accessories, condolences and bank service charges). Monies held in trust increased by $121 from the Snooker Club. It should also be noted that the Snooker Club has now repaid WOLRA for their portion of the new covering for the Pool table. Make sure to mark your calendars for the May 12th General Meeting (the April meeting having had to be cancelled). Aside from hearing about the nominations for the Board, there is expected to be a presentation relating to the Senior Games and details relating to plans for several free seminars; one about Home Safety/Maintenance and another on Personal Legal Issues (Wills, Power of Attorney, Selecting an Executor etc.). Additionally, you’ll hear about Paid Day, Canada Day, the Garage & Bake Sale, along with many other activities as the community ramps up for another active year. Your WOLRA Board

Ontario Senior Games The Ontario Senior Games Association (OSGA) is the provincial body that supports healthy, active living for the amazing people who are 55 plus. It helps to organize summer and winter games every second year as well as invitational, regional and district games. Summer games are

happening this August in Midland and winter games in Cobourg in February 2017. Also the province of Ontario is hosting the National Senior Games in Brampton late August this summer. We are currently organizing qualifying tournaments for the Midland Games. The events at Midland, August 9th -11th are: Carpet bowling, cribbage, tennis, euchre, slo-pitch, cycling, walking, bocce, golf, 5 pin bowling, darts, swimming, contract bridge, lawn bowling, pickle ball, bid euchre, floor shuffleboard, 8 ball pool, snooker and a 10k run. An OSGA Membership costs $15 for the year. You can play in as many tournaments as interest you, but you can only qualify in one tournament for the Provincials in Midland. Calling All Golfers! The 4th Annual Wellington Classic is on Thursday, July 7th. The prices remain the same for golfers - 9 holes scramble with cart and dinner and wine. $55 for WOTL golf course members and $75 for non-members. There is a new lower price for those who wish only to dine and wine - only $25. Registration forms will be available as of April 1st from me and from the golf course office when it opens. Did you know that for the last nine months of 2015,

150 children, youth and their families received mental health services in Prince Edward County? This represents a 33% increase over the whole of 2014. Many of these families are in financial need. Will you help provide funds to allow these children and youth to attend camps and other activities - sports, the arts etc.? The summer and school breaks are especially needy times with improvement in self-confidence, self-esteem and where necessary self-discipline being the goal. Please call me for more information. Spring Clean Up Friday. April 22nd, is Earth Day around the globe and that will be the date for our 2nd Community Spring Clean Up. Last year our super group of volunteers collected 50 bags of garbage from the common and public areas that surround our community. This year the job should be easier but there is always fresh garbage that appears after the winter - and some that comes

from the construction sites. The plan will be to meet up at the Rec Centre at 11 a.m. and then divide into groups to cover as much ground as possible. Bring gloves and wear suitable clothing and shoes. Garbage bags will be provided. There will be light refreshments for participants back at the Rec Centre afterwards. For those interested in participating put the date on your calendar. There will be a sign-up sheet posted in the Library. Let’s make the areas around our community look great! Kevin Hanbury

Dragon Boat Festival 2016

Summer and Dragon Boating are just around the corner. Soon the ice will be gone from West Lake and the paddlers will be striking out across the lake. Once again we are planning to put a WOLRA team together for the Wellington Dragon Boat Festival in early August. Last year we narrowly lost to our rivals from the Legion so this year we would like to get in a bit more training before the event. If

you are interested in being on the team and attending the practice sessions then watch out for a sign-up sheet in the Library in May and information at PAID day. It is lots of fun and an exhilarating workout. Sheila Hanbury, x1213

Movie Afternoon Sunday, April 3rd @ 1:30 in the Rec Centre (last one of the season); one feature only this time. We will be showing INVICTUS - based on a true story – a stirring snapshot in the remarkable life of a truly remarkable man - Nelson Mandela. Directed by Clint Eastwood. Starring Morgan Freeman & Matt Damon. If you like drama, sport, good acting & beating the odds when everything is

stacked against you, then you will enjoy this one. The feature itself runs for 138 min. Would appreciate a good audience if this is to continue – only 7 turned up last time, BYOB & Munchies. Eric & Pam Grimshaw, x1484

Duffers 2016

REMINDER: Sign-up for Duffers Golf will take place May 3rd, 11:00 a.m. at the Rec Centre. The cost is $10. Golf will start Wednesday, May 10th at 9:00 a.m. but be there at least 15 minutes early for check-in. It’s a fun league for both ladies and men. Depending on numbers, a waiting list may be required so sign-up early to avoid

disappointment. Doug Little, (613) 503-1113

…and Donald Trump Ma’am?

Make it look like an accident 007.

I was eating breakfast with my teenaged granddaughter and I asked her, "What special day is it in Canada tomorrow?" Without skipping a beat she said, "It's Prime Minister Day!" She's smart, so I asked her "What does Prime Minister Day mean?" I was waiting for something about the Trudeaus or Harper etc. She replied, "Prime Minister Day is when the Prime Minister steps out of the Prime Minister's Mansion, and if he sees his shadow, we have four more years of Bull S**t." You know, it hurts when hot coffee spurts out your nose.

Therametta Yoga Spring Yoga Classes start April 19th and run through to June 22nd – a 10 week session – with the following schedule: Tuesday 9: 00-10:30 am, Gentle Yoga (Gentle/Beginner Level); Wednesday 8:00-9:30 am, Finding Your Balance (Beginner-Intermediate Level); Wednesday 3:00-4:30 pm, Gentle Yoga (Gentle/Beginner Level). Therametta Yoga was the name of my studio where I taught yoga for a number of years. It’s a name that I made up from two words “thera” for therapeutic and “metta”

from the Sanskrit word meaning loving kindness. It’s not any one particular style of yoga, rather a blend of all the different training that I have done and continue to do. Based on Hatha yoga, I have intertwined all that I have learned from my therapeutic yoga training including mindfulness and meditation practices as well as understanding the anatomy of yoga. I am BoneFit trained through Osteoporosis Canada and a certified coach in the fascinating science of Somatics that allows us to find pain relief through movement. Therapeutic Yoga taught with loving kindness...and laughter. Classes are filling up. Drop me an email or leave a message on my phone to find out how you can join a class and I will get back to you ASAP. I am looking forward to a great Spring Session and seeing you all very soon. together neighbours for a chat. If you aren’t sure what’s involved call me for info or to ask for help. We can pair couples together or assist first time hosts. Suzanne West x2412

Look Up Into the Night Sky Having taken an astronomy course over the winter, there are some interesting events in the Wellington night skies in April that I’d like to share. Jupiter will be visible in the eastern sky and 4 of its moons can be seen with a good pair of binoculars. That’s not a plane going overhead. We will actually be able to see the International Space Station as it passes overhead in the night sky from March 29 – April 18.

It will be visible nightly for short periods of time (1-6 ½ minutes). The ISS is orbiting the Earth at a height of 405 km with an orbit that is approximately 90 minutes, so it will move quickly above PEC. Some of the brightest visibility dates, start/end night sky positions and length of local visibility are; March 31 8:05 p.m. Moving from South to East for 5 minutes April 1 8:48 p.m. Moving from SW to SSE for 6 minutes April 3 8:40 p.m. Moving from WSW to NE for 6 ½ minutes April 10 9:00 p.m. Moving from NW to ENE for 5 minutes April 12 8:51 p.m. Moving from NW to E for 5 ½ minutes April 13 9:35 p.m. Moving from WNW to SSE for 3 ½ minutes April 14 8:43 p.m. Moving from NW to ESE for 6 ½ minutes April 16 8:34 p.m. Moving from WNW to SE for 6 ½ minutes Doug Little, (613) 503-1113

Relay for Life Event - June 10th

/11th

We have registered a team to participate in this year’s Relay for Life which raises funds for cancer treatment and research. This takes place at the Picton fairground on June 10th/11th and we will have our tent there representing WOTL. So far 28 teams are registered. The Relay is a spirited event; there will be entertainment, food and a bunch of

special events happening throughout the night. The first step for us is to build a team of people to represent our community (and no you don’t have to run/walk around the track, nor stay all through the night). Anyone who is interested in joining and participating in this worthwhile and rewarding activity or just wants to learn more can contact me and we can discuss the specifics. As a first step we will be running the Coffee Morning on April 30th to create an awareness of the event. You may instead wish to donate to the Cancer fight through our WOTL team. You can sponsor us online using this link http://convio.cancer.ca/site/TR?fr_id=20304&pg=pfind then click Search for a Team and enter Wellington on the Lake, or maybe more simply just contact me and I can record your pledge. Our team goal is to raise $1000, let’s see if we can beat that! Kevin Hanbury, Email: [email protected] , Tel: x1213 Theatre Group News Thanks to a great audience for a fun time at our St. Patrick’s Day Party. Your enthusiastic response to our efforts was appreciated. Thanks also to Wheelhouse Catering for our delicious Corned Beef and Cabbage (or chicken) dinner - the desserts as always, were spectacular. After expenses, we were able to give $510.00 to the Food Bank! The Theatre Group is now starting to work on a full show (date to be determined). We need new members in all areas - do come and join us. For our two mini-shows, the cast has taken responsibility for their own costumes. Would you look through your possible discards - anything that you think we could use for costuming, props, stage dressing - or perhaps costumes that have been used here in the past. Call Bea at x1625. A silver flask belonging to Theresa Mainville that was used as a prop has gone missing. If you have seen it give her a call, x2352. NEIGHBOURLY NEWS | APRIL 2016 | Issue 281 9

Let’s Make WOTL a Green Community! We see many blue boxes curbside on Thursday mornings but not so many green bins. Organic waste primarily from our kitchens makes up about 45% of household waste. Using a green bin will significantly reduce the amount of garbage you put out for collection. PEC residents are encouraged to participate in this program for the following reasons: • You will significantly reduce the amount of materials going into landfills by recycling your organic waste • Organic waste is collected and taken to a processing facility where it is converted into high-grade compost used by commercial landscapers and home gardeners. • You are helping foster a green environment. Green bins (with a counter top Kitchen Catcher) are available for $40 from Shire Hall Mon-Fri 9.30am to 5.00pm. Blue recycling bins are also available at a cost of $8.00 What goes in the green bin?

- All food waste, including meat (as well as bones), egg shells, coffee filters & grounds, tea bags, dairy.

- Small yard waste and houseplants. - Other items that can be included are paper towel, Kleenex, cotton balls, wooden utensils, paper

plates & cups, animal food, and shredded paper. A more comprehensive list as well as more information on green bins and recycling is on the Shire Hall web site. www.pecounty.on.ca Also consider getting a water barrel in order to conserve water and help lower your water bill (definitely worth considering here in the County!). Check out RainBarrel.ca/Fundraise Barrels are ready to order now on line at RainBarrel.ca/csgpicton or by calling Don Ross at 613-476-8016. Pick up is Saturday May 28th 10 till noon at 841 County Rd 14 Valleypine Farms owned by Don & Deb Hudson. Another thing to consider would be to put your garbage, green bin & blue box at the curb next to your neighbours; this would mean fewer stops and starts for the trucks to pick up (faster and less pollution). Could It Be Spring? A collective sigh, a nod and a smile,

It’s here, what we’ve waited for all of this while. As the Villagers open their blinds to the day, Prepared for the weather - come what may,

They are greeted with sunshine, small birds on the lawn. Those dirty, brown, leftover snow banks are gone! Most grass is still brownish, but patches of green

Usually in other folks yards, can be seen. A VERY close look can discern just a hint

Of some buds. Overall - a slight greenish tint. I swear I can see - - let’s run out for a look - -

Green spears thrusting up out of mouldy leaf gook! That sun feels so good on our shoulders and back

At last Mother Nature has got back on track. Though we know it can’t last, don’t put coats away, We feel sure that the Springtime is trying to stay.

Annual Garage & Bake Sale Saturday, May 7th from 8 a.m. until Noon Spring arrived early this year and with it comes the planning of our garage sale. This event has always been such a great success thanks to the generous donations of articles, baking, and volunteer time. It never ceases to amaze me how such a big undertaking runs so smoothly every year and I can only hope that it will do the same once again. Following are some important details about the sale: • There will be a meeting of all volunteers, new and experienced, on Thursday, April 28, at 2:00,

in the main hall of the Rec Centre, to organize the event. If you are interested in helping, please show up or you can call me @ x3491 with any questions you may have.

• On Thursday, May 5, tables will be set up in the Rec Hall and donations can be dropped off between 12 noon and 3 p.m. They can also be brought in on Friday, May 6, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. We can arrange to have your articles picked up, if necessary. You can phone me at x3491 to schedule a pick-up for either the Thursday afternoon or the Friday morning.

• We are looking for anything in good condition from small appliances to clothing, jewellery to lawn ornaments, home decor items to DVDs, linens to Christmas decorations. Please do not donate luggage as it doesn't sell and takes up valuable space.

• The Bake Sale is a very important component of the day and usually sells out early. Residents have always been so generous with their home made treats and we really appreciate your effort to help make this day such a success. The biggest sellers are pies, squares, cakes and loaves. There is no need to package the goodies as our volunteers will do that on Friday afternoon. But, would you kindly write the name of your donations (ex: Banana Loaf) and “with nuts” if applicable. Please deliver your baked goods on Friday morning between 9 and noon on the Friday (day before sale) which will give our volunteers time to repackage and label them.

• Once again, we would like to put together a “Gourmet Basket” and a “Spa Basket” to raffle off. Last year, ticket sales for the two baskets netted us $434. If you have anything to add to one of these, please let me know as soon as possible and I can arrange to have the items picked up.

• We will, once again have a Tea Room where we will sell coffee and treats. Last year's efforts raised $128. If you have any ideas on how we could improve this section, please let me know. We are always open to new ideas.

• It wouldn't be Wellington on the Lake if we didn't have a 50/50 Draw, so we will continue with that as it raised $152.95 last year which was split with our winner.

• If you have very large items to donate, such as patio sets, exercise machines, or big appliances, we can post a photo of them on a bulletin board at the sale for customers to see. You can add a description and your phone number. Give me a call if you need help with this.

• Last year, local charities picked up everything that was left over and in reasonable condition. We hope to do the same thing again this year. Also, an electronic waste day has been organized by the local Lions club and is scheduled to take place in Wellington the same morning as our sale. They are willing to pick up any unsold electronics when the garage sale ends at noon.

• As a reward for all the volunteers, it is tradition that, on the Friday evening, between 7 and 7:30 p.m., we open the doors for a private display of all the garage sale articles and allow each volunteer to buy up to two items.

If you are new to our community, please consider coming to the meeting on April 28th and helping out. We always have a great time and it's a wonderful way to meet new people and make new friends. Nancy Barton, Garage Sale Coordinator
