FRIENDSHIP & POSITIVE WELL-BEING

Spending time with friends is a rewarding experience! Through friendship, we are able to share and celebrate moments and events in our lives, and also find comfort and support during more difficult times. Friendship, and the ability to relate well with others, makes us feel good, accepted and connected to our community.

Friendship is good for our overall health and well-being. The Mayo Clinic states that friendship can: boost our happiness and help prevent loneliness; increase our sense of belonging and purpose; improve our self-worth and confidence; reduce our stress; help us cope with trauma; and even encourage us to change or avoid unhealthy lifestyle habits.

Most children, even from an early age, enjoy spending time with other kids.

Parents and caregivers often comment how heartwarming it is to see their child’s excitement when they get together with friends on a play date or at a parent-child program in RETSD.

As children are still in the process of learning to be a friend, they may from time to time need gentle assistance, especially if they are feeling nervous or unsure of how to interact.

To help your child develop friendship skills, encourage your son/daughter to:

• Warmly greet their friends when they get together. Remind them to say hi or wave to their friend to show they are happy to see them. A big smile always makes people feel welcome and accepted, even if the friend might be feeling shy!

• Use their friend’s name when speaking to them and speak in a polite voice.

• Look at their friends when they are being spoken to, and hear what they are saying. Being an active listener makes your friend feel valued and appreciated. They might be sharing a funny joke or have something interesting to tell.

• Take turns choosing the game or activity on a play date. Remind your child that their friend might have fun ideas to share about playing “restaurant” or “school” or building a big tower.

• Think about how your friend might be feeling. If your friend is feeling sad or scared, what kinds of things can you do to help them feel better? Would a hug or a kind word help?

• Help your friend when they need it and remember to be part of the cleanup at the end of a play date.

• Say thank you to your buddy when it is time to go. See you next time, friend!

Developing and maintaining friendships are important lifelong skills. As parents/caregivers, it is

important to model how to be a trustworthy and supportive friend through our actions. By “being in the moment” and giving those around us our undivided attention (e.g. limiting time on electronics/mobile devices while with others), we are showing people we value our time with them.

When we speak kindly and show patience and generosity, our children will be more likely to demonstrate these positive characteristics towards their own friends.

In RETSD, we are pleased to offer many opportunities to make connections and deepen friendships at our FREE parent-child programs, like All Aboard the Friend Ship (page 8). We encourage you to register for lots of our wonderful spring programs!

A special parent-child program for children entering kindergarten in September 2017 (siblings are welcome)

Kindergarten, here we come! At Kinder Camp, parents and children will enjoy a variety of songs/rhymes, finger plays and books geared towards starting the adventure of school.

Each class features fun ways to explore print, rhyme, rhythm, beginning sounds and early math—all designed to get your child excited about kindergarten. Parents will create a special homemade book that their child will cherish as they begin their first school year.
