2nd June 2017

PRINCIPAL’S DESK:

PARENT /TEACHER INTERVIEWS

All terms at school are busy but the second half of Term 2 is especially so with teachers preparing for the

children’s mid year reports and Parent/Teacher interviews. The amount of out of school time teachers

devote to reports is seemingly never ending as we believe parents deserve a detailed analysis of their

child’s progress.

PRINCIPAL’S DESK:

The new ‘Enterprise Bargaining Agreement’ negotiated between the Education Department and the

Australian Education Union is presently being ratified by teachers across the state. One point that

relates directly to teacher conditions is the 30 hour model which states “The agreement introduces the

provision of 30 hours per week for teachers to undertake the work directly related to the teaching and

learning program of their class(es) such as face to face teaching, planning, preparation, assessment of

student learning, collaboration, professional development and peer observation, including feedback and

reflection, with the other eight hours available for other activities (such as yard duty, meetings, other

duties and lunch).”

Any person who has a teacher in their family will be well aware of the countless hours they devote to

their work beyond normal school hours. So to all of our staff, my thanks to you on behalf of all school

families for your unwavering commitment to the children of Templeton.

PUPIL FREE DAY—TERM 3

As parents are aware all schools are provided with four pupil free days per year. The Education

Department mandates the first day of the school year and schools are able to choose three other days to

suit their needs. Our policy has always been to “spread the load” by conducting one per term. Our days

for 2017 are:

30th January—mandated day

18th May—Report Writing Day

17th July—Staff Professional Development

7th November—Report Writing Day

The School Council has ratified our third term day as Monday 17th July to enable all teachers to

undertake extensive professional development in fine tuning their data analysis skills which in turn drives

the classroom teaching program.

This early notification is to enable all parents to put the 17th July in their diary now. I am negotiating

with Camp Australia in relation to the options of a full day session, but at this time it is unresolved.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Les Boag—Principal

Dogs at Templeton

I love my dogs but school is not the place for them for a number of reasons, including:

1. Many small children are scared of dogs, especially those dogs that bark or jump up on little people.

2. Some children are allergic to dog hair and worry about having a reaction. 3. Not all dog owners clean up after their dog and we are left with the mess. 4. Some dogs are scared of the noise at school and can act in an unpredictable manner.

We love seeing dogs for Show and Tell, as long as this has been arranged with the classroom teacher. Otherwise, please do not bring your dog into the school ground.

Many thanks, Barbara Peel, Assistant Principal

(except for Show and Tell)

NEW SOAP DISPENSERS The Parent Survey is conducted annually and, without fail, the top two complaints are about homework (too much or too little) and the school’s toilets (no soap, dirty, locks don’t work, etc). Providing soap successfully is one of the biggest frustrations. We have tried: cakes of soap (that get thrown on the floor and are then a slipping risk), soap in stockings (one of my favourites but apparently they carry more germs than anything) and soap dispensers (that the children play with or spill the soap on the floor and someone falls over). It was because of past failings, and the fact soap works best with hot water, that we installed hand sanitisers in every classroom and specialist room. As you can imagine, hot water is too dangerous to have in a primary school. In an effort to keep the children reasonably healthy AND to instil good sanitation habits, I am pleased to say there are now new soap dispensers on the exterior wall of the toilets above the troughs. We hope with some re-education about 'one pump' and 'don't waste', the children will use the soap sensibly and safely. As for the non-locking doors, we are still trying to teach the children not to swing on them. It is this practise that leads to the doors coming out of alignment. They have been fixed on numerous occasions. I am not sure of the solution for this but please check with your child that he or she is not doing that.

Book Fair Success

It was fantastic to see so many Templeton families visit our Book Fair on Open Night and the week after.

With over $8,000 in book purchases made, this is a wonderful example of the high value of reading that

has been instilled in our students. The money raised from our Book Fair will go towards continuing this

love of reading with more book purchases for our school.

Our sincere thanks to the following wonderful Grade 5 and 6 Library Technicians who were so

enthusiastic and giving of their time on Open Night: Eliana, Jiya, Joseph, Hannah, Leah, Emma, Elijana,

Damian, Pawaan, Patrick, Sienna, Bailey, Brejeena, Monique, Bella and Meihuan. We also had many

teaching and office staff who were extremely supportive and helpful during our Book Fair. A big event

such as a Book Fair, couldn’t run successfully without the support of our terrific Templeton Community.

So great work to everyone who contributed!

Regards

Mrs Vanessa Grasso & Mrs Alana Whitby—Library Teachers

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge Support

It is fantastic to note that Templeton has 620 students registered in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading

Challenge. The school library is well stocked with books on the VPRC list to support all our students in

completing the challenge. All challenge books in the school library are clearly labelled for students from

each grade level participating. (Pink dots: Grades Prep-2, Yellow dots: Grades 3-4 and Green dots: Grades

5-6) Please continue to encourage your children to bring their library bags on their library lesson day.

Happy Reading and Regards

Mrs Vanessa Grasso & Mrs Alana Whitby
