1 PRIMARY MATTERS Scotch College Junior School Newsletter 22 July 2016 FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL Paralympian Matthew Haanappel On Monday at our regular whole school assembly we were very fortunate to have a special guest presenter, Matthew Haanappel. Matthew is a paralympian swimmer and will be competing for Australia at this year’s Paralympics in Rio. Matthew previously represented Australia at Commonwealth Games and the London Paralympics where he won a gold and a bronze medal for his swimming. He spoke to the boys about the Paralympics and about his disability (he has cerebral palsy) and how he has worked to overcome his disadvantages to become a very successful swimmer. Matthew shared a few videos of the Paralympics with the boys and was an inspiring and very entertaining presenter. We are very grateful to Mrs Lisa Cotton for organising Matthew to come out to Scotch to speak to the boys. Staff News Sue Hamerton It is with a good deal of sadness that I inform our Junior School community that Ms Sue Hamerton, Head of Junior School Strings, has announced her resignation from Scotch effective Friday 26 August 2016. Ms Hamerton has been part of the Junior School music program for the past seven years and has been a wonderful leader of our strings program over that journey, working with a wide variety of year levels and inspiring many boys to take their strings playing on into the senior years and beyond. Ms Hamerton has decided it is the right time for her to take some time away from teaching and also to spend a bit more time with her elderly parents. We will be very sorry to see Ms Hamerton leave Scotch and I thank her most sincerely for all she has done for the boys and the school over her time with us. Cross Country Successes Last Thursday three of our older boys competed in the State Cross Country Championships at Bundoora Park - Harrison Winneke from Year 5 and Fred Leeton and William Chambers from Year 6. All boys had made it through a number of levels of competition to make it to the State finals. I am pleased to say all three boys did exceptionally well in the 12 Year Old division. Over 80 boys competed in this particular race and our boys were terrific in placing very highly. Fred finished in 2 nd place having led for much of the race, Harry finished 11 th and Will finished 19 th . To have three boys finish within the top 20 in the State is a credit to the boys and to the support they received from Mr McMahon and other teachers. Having placed 2 nd , Fred will now compete in the National Cross Country Championships later in the year in Canberra. Congratulations to all three boys on their outstanding efforts.

Campbell House Chapel Service On Tuesday, the senior boys from Campbell House led the Upper Primary boys in a wonderful House Chapel service in the Littlejohn Chapel. The theme for this service was Superheroes and focused on the story of David and Goliath. The service was very creative and entertaining and even included a few boys from Year 1 who stepped in to play the part of some current day superheroes. We are very grateful to all of the Campbell House boys and to their Head of House, Mrs Margie McDonough, for the work and preparation that went into making the service such a success. German Poetry Competition Each year, under the guidance and direction of Frau Cornelia, several boys are selected to represent the school at the Goethe German Poetry Competition. This year our boys have performed particularly well at the regional level with all of them placing in the top three. I congratulate all of the boys.

Steve Grbac Head of Peer Support [email protected] ANNUAL BOOK FAIR 2016 Our annual Book Fair will be held from Monday 1 August until Wednesday 3 August 2016. This exciting event is a great opportunity to further spark an interest in reading whilst building a home library. The books have been carefully selected and there are books for all ages and interests. The boys will be introduced to some of the books available at the Book Fair through their library lessons over the next week. Friday 29 July will also be a dedicated preview day whereby the classes will view all books available at the Fair. We welcome volunteers to help with sales at the Book Fair before and after school. The opening times are as follows:

Monday 1 August – Wednesday 3 August 8.00am – 9.00am Monday 1 August – Wednesday 3 August 3.15pm – 4.00pm

It has been an exciting and busy week for many Junior School musicians. The Scotch College Biennial Piano Festival kicked off on Saturday 16 July with four concerts just on the weekend! On Sunday 17 July, Oliver New (6C) represented the Junior School in the Student Spectacular, playing Brahm's Impromptu. At lunchtime on Monday, Macgregor Foote (2Y), Matthew Kriesner (3G), Nicolas Nai (4I), Justin Chan (4I), William Ashley (5F), Jason Kriesner (5F), Justin Ooi (5D) and Sebastian Poon (6A) performed in a lovely recital in the James Campbell Room. On Wednesday after school, Jeremy Le (3C), Neil Wang (4C), Thomas Findlay (1R) and Brendan Teoh (2C) participated in a Pedagogy Presentation by Scotch College piano staff member, Ms Chiah Quah. Congratulations to all the Junior School pianists involved in this festival and also to those who made it to some inspiring concerts. There are some lovely performances this weekend, including a solo recital on Saturday 23 July at 7.30pm by guest artist Clemens Leske in the Ian Roach Hall and the Scotch College Piano Competition Final at 6.00pm on Sunday 24 July. Please see the Scotch College website for more details. There were also other performances this week! On Monday, the Year 6 Brass Ensemble performed a piece JJ Cale in Prep - Year 6 assembly. This is an impressive and large group, led by our talented brass staff, Mr Chris Farrands and Mr David Musk. On Tuesday in the Years 3 - 6 Campbell House Chapel Service, Max Orloff (6M) played the cello solo Gavotte by JS Bach for the reflection item, accompanied by Ms Julia Piggin. In Term 3 there are three evening performances where some of our Junior School boys are fortunate to join forces with the Senior School music students. The Years 5 and 6 Concert Band boys will open the Bands Concert on Tuesday 2 August at 7.30pm. The Strings Concert will be held on Thursday 11 August at 6.30pm and a Choral Concert for Year 5 - 12 choristers will be held on Tuesday 16 August at 7.30pm. Tickets are not required. All of these concerts will be in the Ian Roach Hall. Letters will be sent home regarding these events.

On 6 September, the Years 5 and 6 string orchestra will be hosting string students from Strathcona Baptist Girls Grammar School for a workshop afternoon. Last year we enjoyed visiting Strathcona and we are delighted to return their hospitality.

In the final week of the term the Year 2 Strings Concert will be held on Wednesday 14 September at 2.00pm in the Geoffrey McComas Theatre. This is always such fun as all the Year 2 boys showcase what they have been learning in their compulsory string lessons. All family and friends are welcome. Tickets are not required.

PE AND SPORT

Physical Education

The boys have been working hard on their field event preparation for Family Day. Shot Put and Long Jump training have begun as we strive this term for Olympic ideals. Scotch College has been around as long as the modern Olympics and our motto this term mirrors our Olympians:

Citius Altius Fortius

These words mean Faster - Higher – Stronger and it was the Dominican priest Henri Didon who first expressed the words in the opening ceremony of a school sports event in 1881.

We continue this week concentrating on power and speed. Agility ladders and box jumps have been used to push the boys as we focus on improving our leg strength and speed. Our Prep boys began their Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) this week and many thanks to our parent helpers who are giving of their time for the youngest boys.

A note from home is needed if a boy is injured, ill or unable to participate in daily PE or sport. The school record or communication book is a great way to communicate, especially with 400 plus boys to manage. Year 4 – 6 boys not in sport uniform for PE have a note written in the record book for the parents to check. Your support is appreciated in keeping the boys accountable. It is very difficult to practise athletics if boys are not in correct sport uniform. Boys should bring their sport uniform to school every Monday and take it home every Friday so it is always at school if needed.

Family Day Trials

Boys who missed the sprint trials in Week 1 will be asked to make them up during Week 4. Year 5 and 6 boys will be timed during their Interschool Sport training times on Tuesdays and Thursdays while Year 3 and 4 boys will be timed during lunch.

Interschool Sport

There were many hockey and soccer boys not in correct uniform this past week for training. Mouthguards and shinguards are compulsory for the sports, for both training and Wednesday competition. Boys are letting down their team by not being prepared because they will not be able to play in the weekly matches.

Our soccer coaches in particular had a tough job this past week trying to select multiple teams across different levels after one or two training sessions. If your son is disappointed in the team he has been chosen for, please have him ask his coach what he can do to make it to the next level. It’s not where you start that counts but where you finish.

Year 5 and 6 Soccer welcomed Nick Dempsey and Boris Ivanov to the coaching ranks this week as they assist our staff in running training so they can better look and observe the boys in training. Year 6 Hockey welcomed Hugh Hocking in a similar role. Teams are published on the sport noticeboard each Tuesday and all questions should be directed to the coaches.

Term 4 sport choices are currently being undertaken. Sailing and Golf are choices that do not have weekly training, while Basketball, Touch Rugby, Water Polo and European Handball teams will train on Tuesdays or Thursday. Sailing and Golf will also incur additional fees because of the nature of the sports. Golf professionals take the boys for a couple of lessons during the term, while Sailing costs include instructors, equipment hire and lessons. Results for this week’s games:

State Cross Country Congratulations to Harrison Winneke (5F), Fred Leeton (6M) and William Chambers (6A) who ran last Thursday in the State Cross Country meet at Bundoora Park in the 12 year old event. The boys ran a beautiful race with all improving on their places last year. Fred led for most of the race and came 2nd, while Harry 11th and Will 19th placed very high competing against the best in the state. The top five qualifiers in each age group will represent Victoria at the National Championships, so Fred is on his way to Canberra in August to wear the big V. Fred’s story is one of hard work and perseverance as this is his 4th year of qualifying for state and the first time he has finished top 10, let alone make the state team. We wish Fred all the best as he competes against the best in the country!
