Genres that are popular

Within the last two years there have been a series of successful films from all different types of genre, Here are a few that made a large profit on top of their budget

Knocked up: American comedy, drama film : 190m in profitDumb and dumber: American comedy : 230m dollars in profit (small budget 17m)Anchorman: Legend of Roy Burgundy: American comedy: 60m dollars in profit

The American comedy genre tends to see a trend of consecutive amounts of large gross profits as can be seen above, the real profit is usually made when people can relate to the film in a more personal way, for example the viewers of the film “superbad” would be at school and would be able to relate to the antics in the film quite well because they could ironically be in those sorts of situation as well and this would generate decent profit because teens would be able to find these films funny because of the fact that they are quite immature and just so overdramatic with situations that only silly people would find themselves in but this is the sort of genre that is popular among teens and has been for a few decades, in 1994 “dumb and dumber” was made on a 17m dollar budget and the story wasn’t too good but the situations that they got into made it funny and it generated over 200m dollars in profit based on those situations.

Budget for the film

The budget of films tend to always be made back and profit at some point and so this means that it is easy to see which films will most likely make profit a lot quicker. I would hope that my film would profit within the box office weekend.

Superbad: 20m budget, 170m box officeThe Hangover: 35m budget, 470m box officeAmerican Pie: 11m budget, 240m box office

These films all made decent profit for the budget that they were made with which gives me the information that a comedy film and also films that people can relate to will make a lot of profit.I would like to have the budget set at about 70m because that would acquire a decent amount of profit if it went well and I would have a lot of money to work with to make the film. This would consist of Actors, Story rights, Screenplay, Producers, Director, Production, Visual effects, Music and Composer

These films that I have chosen give me the idea of the film that I want to make because they are all American comedy films and they are all films that people can relate to which lays quite a foundation for my film which will be an American comedy and will be related to by teens due to its story being based in a school

Title: Looks unique and stands out very well

Characters in the poster: you can relate to at least a few of these characters well.

Logo: you can relate to Columbia films as these tend to always be the producers that produce these types of teen comedy film

Well known actors: people can relate to these names from posters and they are quite a big influence on whether or not someone will go and see the film

From the makers of: these types of information are key because if you make popular film titles stand out on a poster that is advertising a film then the viewers of the films that have also been brought by the same person will most likely go and see this film

Market Trends

In the past 5 years there have been lots of comedy genres that have made a reasonable profitE.g.Couples Retreat: 2009, 90m in profitGrown Ups: 2010, 190m in profitHorrible Bosses: 2011, 170m in profit21 Jump Street: 2012, 160m in profitIdentity Thief: 2013, 130m in profit

What these films have in common is that they are all comedy, they all feature actors that are well known and they all made reasonable profit at least which outlines that they were all very successful, All of these films have well known characters that star in these films that feature trouble as an adult except in 21 jump street because Jonah Hill also stars in superbad which is a comedy that is aimed at teens and is about lives of teens

Social Media Twitter, Face book and YouTube

Social media in terms of research is both primary and secondary and I have found that social media has produced quite a lot of researchable content in itself.

Face book Statuses: “Question (What is your favourite genre)”: I sent out a status asking what peoples favourite genres were And I got eleven comments replying to the question. This means that facebook is similar to a survey except it is slower butThe results will come from people that you are friends with meaning that you will probably get an honest opinion from each and every person, another advantage is that you don’t have to move from a computer in order to get results and so facebook is a good source that provides easy research if people are willing to share it with you. The downside of facebook however is that since you are not face to face you cannot persuade them as easily to give you answers to your questions and so you may not be able to find out everything however facebook is just an online survey if you want to use it and so most of the time you can use it and receive a large amount of research from your peers and so you can use facebook as a source of research

Twitter: Tweets can be an easy way to pick up some easy research because people will almost always (if they have twitter and use it frequently) tweet about a film just after they have seen it amongst other things and so you could find a group of tweets that demonstrate how popular a film can be for example if a new action film is released in the cinema and people go and see it, you are bound to be able to find a huge amount of tweets that talk about how good a film was or how excited people are to go and see films and this leads to a link that you can use to find out how much money the film makes or made in the box office weekend. This can be good in terms of tools to research because twitter can again get peoples opinions, the only problem is it is different from facebook in terms of it not being as easy to ask questions or leave comments and so it is a lot harder to obtain research because you have to get down to the very depths of twitter to find out information.

Page 10: Primary research and 2ndary

YouTube: Videos on YouTube can play a huge role in your research because theres are millions upon millions of videos that are about reviewing films or just films in general and so you can easily find a huge amount of research that will be voiced in the videos online. The advantages that YouTube will give you are that it is huge so it is easy to conduct research on it and using it and also that you can get peoples real opinions from their videos. There is a lot of “big” you tubers (who have a lot of subscribers) and they usually make reviews or just generally base their videos on films and so you get their real opinion and since they are talking about it in their video they will go into detail about what they think the film is like and this can give you evidence of popular films.

Page 11: Primary research and 2ndary

I want to release on the 31st of July 2015 because this is during the beginning of the summer which would make time for teens to go and see the film

I know this will make money because during its release date there will not be any comedy films being released and teen comedies attract a huge amount of teens generally

I would like to make a film called The never ever rap down situation, the name has a unique title within the film as the first letter of each of the words in the title spells out “nerds”.

The director that I would like to direct my film is Greg Mottola as he has directed a very successful series of films that have profited hugely e.g. superbad (170m in profit) and he is available for 2015

What films are up against it: As of the 31st of July 2015 the films that my one will be up againstare Star Wars episode 7, Ratchet and Clank, Superman/Batman, The Smurfs 3, Minions and Ant-Man whichwill all be films that are good within their own genres but are not teen/adult comedy meaning that this teen/adult comedy will fit perfectly in with all of these genres at the time that it is released.

The actors I am wanting to hire are Jonah Hill who is currently available during the time that is needed for “TNERDS” Furthermore I would also like to have Seth Rogen star in the film and another name is Steve Carrel who is available during the time needed also featuring a few small names. These three names are reasonably well known and have had a history in teen comedies

21 Jump Street made over 160m dollars in profit with Jonah hill“This is The End” had stars Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen and that made 90m dollars, Super bad made 160m dollars in profitGet Smart made over 150m dollars featuring Steve Carrel as well as Crazy stupid love made 90m dollars
