    2020 Final Newsletter

We all know that Covid-19 has impacted on many things this year, and we can’t deny it has had an impact on how we have managed the school, and on a number of events this year. We have, however, still been able to provide a year of great learning and positive experiences for our students. Significant events such as swimming, interschool sports, our faction carnival, the interschool athletic carnival, our cross country events, the Colour Explosion and a brilliant camp to name just a few, have all been great experiences for our students. Like many organisations, we will reflect on our practices during Covid-19 and identify what we did differently that is worth keeping. Independent Public School Throughout the difficult months of Covid-19 we continued through the process to become an Independent Public School (IPS). This would not have been possible without the support of our staff, School Council and P & C. The role of the School Council Chair is significant in this process. I am particularly grateful to Owen Neal, who accepted the nomination to be School Council Chair, at late notice through this process. Yesterday, Owen and I attended the IPS Presentation Day and we were presented with our IPS certification by The Honourable Sue Ellery (Minister of Education) and Lisa Rodgers (Director General of Education). Our Council has transitioned to be our School Board, and more information will be coming home next year about their role in our school. 2021 Enrolments and Classes

At this stage our student enrolments look like increasing again for 2021, but this can always change, which makes class lists and budgeting very difficult. I am projecting,

however, that we will begin the year with about 550-560 students. Parents need to be aware that split classes are a reality and unavoidable. This is because our enrolments rarely fit neatly into the class numbers, which are determined by our Industrial Agreement (see below). Kindy PP Yr 1 Yr 2 Yr 3 Yr 4 Yr 5 Yr 6

    Enrolments

Given the numbers in each cohort next year, it is impossible to run straight year level classes.

On the projected numbers, we will have a split class in the following years: 1/2, 2/3, 4/5 and 5/6. Many hours have been spent working on these classes to ensure each class is balanced, when considering abilities, and social and emotional well-being. Given this, the classes will not be changed at the behest of parents; to do this would make our task impossible! I am asking parents to be understanding and accepting of the need to run split classes.

    Departing Students and Families

I would like to wish all children and families who are leaving us all the very best on their journey. I trust that Coogee Primary School has given all of our departing students

a great start and that you leave us with fond memories of your time at our school. We also say good bye to another cohort of Year 6 students, and we all wish them well on the next stage of their educational journey at secondary school. Staff Farewell

This year we farewell and thank Mrs Dimer and Miss Lloyd, who are leaving us. We wish them the very best for next stage of their careers. A very special thank you to Mrs Dimer for all of her work during her 5 years at Coogee Primary; I truly believe Coogee Primary School is a better school because of her work over her five years here. Brabham P.S are fortunate to have her as a foundation staff member. Miss Lloyd

quickly became an important and valued member of the ECE team and Pegs Creek are certainly lucky to be getting a great teacher and great team member. Thank you also to all of our parents and family members who have helped us throughout 2020. There have been so many hours volunteered to support the school and our students. I thank you all for making a difference!

    Thank You

I extend a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated group of P & C parents who are giving of their time and who work so hard. Our P & C have been brilliantly led by Michael

Montgomery, who stepped into the role of President. All of your efforts do not go unnoticed, and I applaud your energy and enthusiasm, and thank you all for your friendship and support this year. The P & C support for our Year 6 student’s camp was outstanding and the Colour Explosion was another brilliant afternoon for our students.

It takes a great staff that work as a unified team to get through difficult times. The level of collaboration from our staff in organising home-learning, and in dealing with often daily changes, as directed by Health and our Department, was outstanding. I want to acknowledge and thank all of our staff who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to provide the very best for our students. Our teachers are often at school long after the home siren, and early in the morning – not to mention weekends! Thank you also to all of our parents and family members who have helped us throughout 2020. There have been so many hours volunteered to support the school and our students. I thank you all for making a difference! I wish everyone a safe and festive break, and I look forward to seeing you all again on Monday 1 February 2021 when school commences for the students.

Coogee Primary and Community Garden News This year the Coogee Garden project (the fenced off area with a shipping container) has lay seemingly dormant. There have been a few reasons for this: Co-vid being one. Fortunately, behind the scenes it has been taking root and slowly growing. We now have fruit trees planted, a shipping container for storage and future garden beds taking shape inside to be finished and installed over the holidays. The final grounds including bobcat clearing of

weeds and levelling of ground, garden bed installation, reticulation, mulching and soil for the beds should be done by early next year in time for a whole school planting. Next year we will be re-forming the garden working group made up of teachers and parents who will work towards exciting projects that will enrich the students’ learning and the connection to nature in our school. These include turning the shipping container into an easily accessible, practical storage area for tools and materials, worm farms and compost bins being moved into and being used in the garden area, sustainability leader roles in the school, signage for our Noongar Bush Tucker and Seasons garden, recycled art projects, garden club during lunch times and of course whole school planting and cooking of produce. It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child, in this case it will be a community - Coogee School community to raise this garden, We hope you will join us in this exciting venture, Coogee Garden Working Group Congratulations to Evie, Marlie, Jade, Isla, Emily and Chloe from Room 11 who entered and WON the Bunnings Recycled Wreath Competition. This was made from chip packets collected at recess (that would usually go to landfill), bread tags, corflute and chocolate wrappers. The $200-dollar gift voucher prize will go towards something special for our garden next year, chosen by the wreath creators.

Regional Futsal Championships We participated with 3 teams in the Regional Futsal Championships. The tournament was held at the Pro Futsal Centre in Bibra Lake. The owners of the Pro Futsal Centre do not charge for the tournament so it keeps the cost for our students down! Thank you Pro Futsal Centre. https://www.profutsal.com.au/ All of our students had a great day of fun and competition. The other participating schools brought some very strong teams as well, so our students really had to step up and work hard. Our girls’ team and one of our boys team came second and they qualified for the State Championships. Two of our students won individual awards: Ivy H- Most Valuable Player in the girls’ category Nicholas R- Golden Gloves (best goalkeeper in the boys’ category) A big thank you to Michael Lowry and Hana Lowry for coaching our teams.

State Futsal Championships Playing against the best futsal teams is a massive challenge and one that our students truly embraced during the State Futsal Championships. They gave it their absolute best and they should be very proud of their achievements. Girls Coogee- South Coast Baptist (State Champions) 0-11 Coogee- Riverton 4-0 Boys Woodbridge-Coogee 0-3 South Coast Baptist (State Champions)- Coogee 1-0 Rian H was named Most Valuable Player in the State Championships. A big thank you to Michael Lowry and Adam Kostrencic for coaching our teams. Also a big thank you to all the parents and staff who came down to cheer on the students. Swimming Carnival 2021 If your child is in year 4, 5 or 6 in 2021, they will be eligible to participate in the Coogee Primary School Swimming Carnival. Students have to compete in two events or more and they can choose from: Freestyle-Backstroke-Breaststroke-Butterfly-Body Board Paddle. The carnival will be held at the Fremantle Leisure Centre in the 25m pool on Friday 19 March. I will need 18 parent volunteers to make this carnival a success! More information will follow early next year. Merry Christmas and a fantastic holiday to all of our wonderful families. Kees Maatman- Physical Education teacher

2020 - The Year That Was As COVID-19 hit home in February, uncertainty and emotions ran high in what would become a tough year. Coogee Primary School become the 32nd school to enter the Gilberts Fresh Program where 1%

of every purchase you make goes back into our school simply by signing up for free at any time to get your Loyalty Card, nil conditions.

The P&C created individual Stay Connected Facebook Year Groups in what fast become the most disconnected year in living memory.

Outside the Spellathon, the Cadbury Fundraiser was introduced as the only possible fundraiser for our Year 6 Camp with funds needing to be raised amidst COVID-19 school closures.

The P&C Treasurer with the help of her lovely family, took on the role of Easter Bunny, wrapping all raffle winning prizes for distribution.

The School's First Assembly would be the last until Term 4 due to social distancing requirements not allowing spectators, with last week's Assembly only allowing families of award winners to attend.

The end of Term 3 saw the end of the School Canteen, with Term 4 lunches delivered from an off-site location. Term 4 saw the Canteen Tender process successfully securing a new and fresh look canteen all ready for Term 1 and well into the future - stay tuned for future announcements on this.

With the State going into lockdown and school closures imminent, the P&C locked-in the November Colour Explosion and Movie Night without even knowing if these events could go ahead.

The P&C continued to pushed through the year, bringing in vibrant new interschool and soccer shirts, new assembly mats and large Connect 4 & Jenga games for the kids to enjoy.

Our Year 6's proudly represented their School enjoying their graduation ceremony at the Surf Club this week with the P&C wishing all of our leavers all the success this world has to offer.

In the year that was, Wednesday April 1st saw a gentle S/W breeze whistle its way down a lonely Yangebup street on a clear 27° day where one of Coogee Primary's greatest exports would walk his dog for the final time, laying gently down beside his trusted friend. An off-duty paramedic passing by could do nothing to bring our 14 yr-old Buster back to this world, his time here with us all obviously complete. He left us with one simple message which has become as far reaching as Newspapers in the UK and New Zealand - 'If I leave you with just one thought, just be a good friend'

Buster Vogt 11/01/2006 - 01/04/2020 Our next meeting will be the AGM on Tuesday February 9. Merry Christmas, be safe over the School Holidays, watch out for those double demerits and see you all back in the new year in the first week of February. Coogee Primary P&C
