So, the first half of your first term at school is over. How’s it going? We hope that you’re enjoying school and that you’re all settling in nicely. We have a fantastic issue here for you this autumn. That’s right, it’s now autumn. Summer is over and winter is on its way. But it’s not all doom and gloom! We have loads to look forward to in the coming months! At the end of October we have Halloween … ooooooohhhh … Then, on November 5 it’s Bonfire Night! We love Bonfire Night at Primary Times with the sparkly fireworks and lovely warming food. Do remember to keep safe though. After Bonfire Night, it won’t be long till Christmas! We have a few sneak peeks of what’s happening around the Midlands around Christmastime.

As well as all of that, we have some great competitions for you to enter and a lovely feature on Denise van Outen about becoming a new mum and how smart phones can give you back some valuable ‘me time’.

We also have all the usual Roundabout and Theatre listings telling you what’s on and when during October Half Term and beyond. Have a great week off, and we’ll see you at Christmas!

OCTOBER HALF TERM 2011 ISSUE4

The concept of choosing, understanding and taking full advantage of a smart phone can be a daunting task for many people. With the help of Denise van Outen and Three, the prospect is less overwhelming.

After giving birth to her fi rst child, Betsy at the age of 35 in May 2010, Denise van Outen set about learning about the advantages of owning a smart phone. She had been told about the technology’s uses by her many friends and

decided to invest in one herself.

Partnering up with Three, the fastest growing mobile network in the country, Denise has been traveling up and down the country, spreading the news and uses of a smart phone to mums everywhere.

“Being a new mum, it felt like a really good collaboration. Three have come up with the All You Can Eat data, which is great, encouraging new mums to use smart phones to see how much time they can save. I was

struggling a lot during the early days, trying to juggle being a busy, working mum, running the house and getting back to work. I learnt of the benefi ts of smart phones for myself, with the amazing time saving opportunities and convenience of the smart phone.”

Three have published fi gures that say 82 per cent of mums now have less than one hour of ‘me time’ every day. By using a smart phone, mums can win back up to 135 hours a year. By using the capabilities of a smart phone, you can check your emails, do the food shopping, keep in touch with your friends via social media and even buy yourself a few treats too.

“I love fashion. It’s something I do online all the time. I’m always browsing fashion websites like ASOS to check out the latest trends. I buy most of Betsy’s essentials and baby clothes online too. The only problem is trying to hide all the boxes from my

husband! He comes home and says, “Have you been shopping again?” I have to try to arrange deliveries when he’s not home! All mums must remember to take time to treat themselves. Just because you’re a mum doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be allowed the occasional treat.“

Celebrities are always asked how they get back in to such great shape after having a baby. Denise says, “It’s much harder if you don’t start until after you’ve had the baby. While you’re pregnant, listen to what your body wants and try to fi nd a healthy alternative. It’s all about everything in moderation. When I was pregnant, I was craving carbs. It would have been very easy to just sit and eat lots of chips, but instead I went for whole-wheat pasta. In the early stages, I was craving cheddar cheese, which was obviously going to pile on the pounds. I spoke to my nutritionist who recommended

drinking more milk and taking a calcium supplement. There are alternatives to the foods that you are craving. The whole thing about eating for two is a complete myth. I think people just use that as an excuse!”

A lot of women struggle with the issue of when to get back to work after having a baby. Denise became the centre of a rather public debate when she went back to work. She felt the criticism was very unfair: “I received quite a lot of criticism when I went back to work. I have a lot of friends who had to go back to work as a necessity. I respect women who choose to stay at home and be stay-at-home mums, but I’ve always worked and I love working. I’m really lucky that the job that I do allows me to work and still see Betsy loads. When I fi rst went back to work, I went in to Legally Blonde in the West End. I was with Betsy all day and I was working at night after she was asleep. At the time of the criticism, I was on a trek in Peru to raise money

for Breast Cancer Care. I was with other women who were going through treatment for breast cancer and had young children. I felt like, if I was being criticised, so were they, and that was not fair.”

As far as a multi-tasking mum, Denise van Outen is about as close as you can get. “I’ve just fi nished doing a fi lm called Run For Your Wife. It’s a British comedy, out next year. I’ve also just started doing my narration for The Only Way Is Essex.” How does she manage to fi t in all that work and be a wife and mum? “Having a smart phone certainly helps! The technology is amazing for saving your valuable time. When I’m on the train, going to work, I can be checking my emails, doing the food shopping, booking our family holiday. I can do all the things that I used to have to do at home on a computer while I’m sat on a train. It’s great!”

Denise is currently working on her second book, Mumalicious

DON’T FOOL WITH FIREWORKS. That’s the message from West Midlands Fire Service as the bonfi re and fi rework season gets underway. Fireworks are enjoyed by thousands of people across the country every year but it is vital to remember that they are explosives and can cause some serious harm if not handled with care. The Fire Service always recommends that people go to an organised fi rework display if possible (check out Roundabout for our pick of some of the best around the region) but they know that many people want to share the occasion with family and friends at home. Vij Randeniya, West Midlands Fire Service’s chief fi re offi cer told us: “We want people to enjoy the fi rework season but urge them to remember how important it is to stay safe. It is a fact that the highest number of fi rework-related injuries occur at private parties and over half of those injured are children.” The guidance set out in the Fireworks Code

offers simple and practical advice, and if followed correctly, will ensure the safety of everyone. • Never put fi reworks in your pocket or throw them• Only buy fi reworks marked BS 7114 – this is the sign of British Safety Standard approval• Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fi reworks• Store fi reworks safely in a closed box – usually a tin with a lid• Follow the instructions on each fi rework• Light fi reworks at arms length using a taper• Stand well back• Never go near a fi rework that has been lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode• Never throw fi reworks into a bonfi re• Always supervise children around fi reworks and sparklers• Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves• Never give sparklers to a child under fi ve• Keep pets indoorsFirefi ghters from West Midlands Fire Service have attended a number of incidents over

the years related to the misuse of fi reworks and poor construction of bonfi res, and the consequences can be devastating. In addition to the guidance set out in the Fireworks Code, West Midlands Fire Service also advises:• Never put petrol on a bonfi re• Make sure spectators maintain a safe distance from both fi reworks and bonfi res• Make sure bonfi res are constructed safely and are at a distance from objects which may catch fi re unintentionally (sheds, fences etc.)• Remember that it can take several hours for a bonfi re to extinguish properlyFor more information, visit www.wmfs.net and click on fi reworks safety. Everyone loves Tintin. In this new fi lm, Tintin and his friends discover directions to a sunken ship commanded by Captain Haddock’s ancestor. As always, curiosity takes over and they go off on a treasure hunt. Based on the series of stories originally published in the 1940s, The Adventures of Tintin has all the adventurous excitement as the books. Daniel Craig, Jamie Bell, Simon Pegg, Mackenzie Crook.

This sequel sees the return of the loveable dancing penguin. Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood) and his comrades are battling to save Antarctica from powerful forces that threaten life as they know it. As if things weren’t complicated enough, Mumble’s dance-ophobic son Erik runs away from home, only to fi nd a new role model in the form of super-cool fl ying Mighty Sven (voice by Hank Azaria). Mumble takes on the heroic role of securing their existence, rallying together the penguin nations for the fi ght of their lives.
