Week beginning 29 th June Home learning activitiesbased around our new book ‘Aaaargghh Spider!’You do not need to buy this book to do the activities.

Literacy ‘Aaaargghh Spider!’*Look at the attached word document for this week’s tasks.

Reading/Phonics: *This week our ‘special friends’ sound to practise is ‘00’. Our Rhyme for this sound is: ‘poo at the zoo’In school when introducing a new sound, we would follow the sequence below: Everyday recap sounds already taught ‘speed set 1’ You may like to watch the Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc. videos online (9:30am) or make your own flash cards which the children could do. (Attached is a copy of speed set 1 with the handwriting rhymes) Day 1- Oral blending. Have a set of objects or pictures containing the ‘oo’ sound. Explain to your child you have hidden something behind your back and you will ‘Fred talk’ what it is, and they have to guess what is hidden behind your back. If they are correct, they get a point. Swap roles. poo, zoo, moon, boot, spoon, roof, root, food

Day 2- Reading and BlendingUse the attached PowerPoint to support your child in reading words with the long ‘oo’ sound in them.

Day 3- Segmenting and writing these wordsHide some objects or pictures containing words with ‘oo’ in them around the house or garden. Ask your child to go on a hunt for them and every time they find one, they have to write down what it is. Ask them to return the piece of paper back to you to check and there might be a surprise.

*Please read 2 books set on Bug Club.

*Key words- Play the key word ‘snakes and ladders’ game attached.

Mathematics Doubling

When children are doubling numbers, they need to add the same number again. In school, we talk about having ‘two lots of something that is the same’. They may like to start with games such as ‘snap’ with playing cards or dominoes, finding

the domino that has the same number of spots on the same side. If you have two dice they could play a game rolling them, if they match they get a point.

Below are some ideas of activities involving painting, mirrors and pegs you may like to try.

*Please watch ‘Understanding the concept of doubling’ by The Oak National Academy.

*Please watch ‘Double trouble’ on Numberblocks.

*Please watch ‘Half-time’ – Numberjacks

*Cut out and sort the ‘printable domino set’ into ‘doubles’ and ‘not doubles’.

*Complete the ‘Ladybird doubling’ sheet by drawing the spots and counting the total.

*Have a go at some of the challenges on the ‘Solving Problems – doubling’ handout.

*Play ‘Ladybird doubles’ on www.maths-games.org

Capacity- This week’s tasks are all about capacity. How much does it hold? In school we would introduce the word ‘capacity’ through lots of water play. We would explain the word capacity means how much something holds. Below are some suggested activities to support your child with understanding capacity. Bath time is also a good chance to continue extending your child with their understanding of capacity.

*Model filling a bottle, so it is

full, empty, half full, nearly full, nearly empty. Model the language and explain what you are doing. Then ask your child to explorer filling cups, bottles and different containers so they are full, empty, half full. Encourage them to explain what they are doing as they are doing it.

Allow your child to explore using different tools to fill their containers for example the butter tub holds 6 cupfuls, 34 spoonfuls.

Look at the document titled ‘water, water’ this is a fantastic activity to extend your child’s thinking. You could also pretend you are making a potion for a witch or link it to something your child is interested in.

You may like to explore capacity using something other than water. For example, sand, Lego bricks, pasta. How much pasta does the small bowl hold? etc.

MathleticsThis week we are setting 3 tasks linked to capacity. These will be going live at 9am on Monday and you will have the whole week to complete them. Once you have completed the task you can then play on Mathletics live under the tab ‘play’.
