Week 4, Term 2 Tena koutou katoa Well done to everyone involved with the “Mamaku Possum Challenge” this year. It was an amazing effort by everyone on the Sports Committee, teachers and and Home and School. With your support this has been the best Possum Challenge we have had so far. An extra thanks to Josh Goodman and Cam Hancox from Rotorua Canopy Tours who helped MC the Possum Challenge. Thanks to Darryn Dodge who at the last moment jumped in to run the Auction. We had 25 teams enter the Possum Challenge this year that eliminated 614 possums, 101 Wallabies and 86 Rabbits and Hares from the environment . This is great news as we fundraise to help get more kids into sports at our school and also improve our environment We also had some fantastic art work and technology projects completed by the students. My highlights were the students who completed technology projects like the bird houses, bird feeders, pest scarers and invented some cool projects related to keeping our native animals (fauna) and trees (flora) safe from pests. The work will be up for this week in the hall for viewing if you were unable to make the possum challenge prize giving and the prizes for students will go out on Friday. Ngā mihi nui Gary Veysi

Room 6 have been working on using hooks and show not tell in their writing. Here are some of our pieces of writing.

The Final Game

Head down, feet running, legs aching. That was all I had thought to do. Just run, keep on running. The team was relying on us. If we didn’t pull through now, we would fall even lower on the placing scheme. I kept running, following the footsteps of the rivalling team, attempting to out-play them. I felt a drop of sweat flow down the side of my face. Although the rain poured onto us, I felt as if I was in the Sahara desert. Even though exhausted and sweaty, we all listened to the orders of the captain, constantly adjust our game plan. Then I heard the dreadful noise, my name. I had been subbed off, the worst possible thing to happen at an intense part of the game. My mind couldn’t focus on anything else, all my thoughts came back to the game. Hand grasping my hair, breathing deeply, quietly panicking while I painfully watched the rest of my team play. As quick as I was off, I was on again. My name was called, my feet lighting, my eyes telescopes ready to find and attack any near enemy. They always say that ‘It’s just a game’ but we were fighting for something more than just a game, we were fighting for a reputation. The endless fight continues. The score would go one way then even out, over and over again. Then it sat for a while, not altering, almost being affected, but still not. It felt as if we had been playing for an eternity. An eternity which came to sudden halt. The dreadful noise of the final whistle rung out through the entire venue. I fell to the ground in a heap of sweat and crazy hair. It filled me with pain to look at the scoreboard. 5-6. They had beat us. That was it. We lost. They had beaten us. After all this pain and sweat, we failed. By Levi Watchorn Year 8
