A Message from Pastor Matt

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we get ready to turn the calendar to a New Year, I wanted to invite you to participate in a New Testament Reading Challenge. Beginning January 1 and running through March 31, the congregation is encouraged to read the entire New Testament, a task that is easily accomplished by simply reading 3 chapters a day. You can use your own Bible (and if anyone needs a Bible, please contact me!!!).

A check sheet of the readings are available in the order that they are to be read. They can be picked up in the narthex, or mailed if you are not able to come to church. (In the event that you are reading this after January 1st, I would invite you to simply catch up as you can and not worry about matching the exact day to the reading. Given the pace of the reading, one should be able to get on track relatively quickly.

There will also be opportunities to gather with me throughout the 90 days to talk, share, and ask questions based on your reading. These dates are marked in the check sheet (colored in red) and will be offered during both daytime and nighttime hours. The idea is to have opportunities to hear how the Holy Spirit has been active during this shared reading.

As stated in the ELCA’s Confession of Faith, “This church accepts the canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God and the authoritative source and norm of its proclamation, faith, and life.” We engage with God’s Word as a living and profound experience that heals, teaches, challenges, and guides us. May all who engage in this study find such and experience and more.

God’s blessings to you in the New Year!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Matt

A Message from Deacon Shari

Magi For those seekers

who put truth before comfort and hope before security

we give thanks. Grant us a wise man’s hope—

light in darkness, use for our gifts, God at the end.

For those we know who do not know

we will find what we worship we pray tonight.

For those we do not know trying to understand and needing wisdom

we pray tonight. By: Godfrey Rust

Dear Prince of Peace family, As we marvel at the birth of the Christ child and move into the season of Epiphany, I am reminded that this marks a season of seekers. Seekers like the magi, who journeyed far in search of a king. Seekers like ourselves who come with sometimes open and sometimes heavy hearts and minds, seeking words of hope. Seekers like those who do not yet understand the gift of faith that is theirs, who come with questions. Seekers whom we know and those who we do not know are searching. In a world of hustle and bustle, of change and flux, of worry and question; we pray for those who seek. We give thanks for those who sought and led the way before us, the magi, great teachers of the church, faithful leaders of the Church and of our world, saints and apostles.

Page 6: Prince of Peace - Razor PlanetDear Prince of Peace family, As we marvel at the birth of the Christ child and move into the season of Epiphany, I am reminded that this marks a season

6

We hold on to the hope that through our seeking their will be light in the darkness; even if it comes from a stranger, for we have entertained angels without even knowing it, use for our gifts; that as we seek our blessings might bless others, and God at the end; for the truth of Epiphany is that the king that the magi sought, although not what they expected, is exactly what they found, a king that had come to dwell among them and to save them. That same king comes for us and all seekers. I wish you a very blessed Epiphany and a Happy New Year! God’s Peace, Deacon Shari

A Message from Michele Nitzel, Daycare Director

Happy New Year! A new year offers us the opportunity to reflect on the months that have just past, what have we done well and areas to improve. As child care providers we continuously strive to improve our skills, looking for new ideas and techniques to use as part of our daily routine. Our plans and goals must always include the children and what is best for them. As 2016 begins, we have a new opportunity to make some changes and introduce new ideas and skills in our day to day activities. We build on our strengths, recognize and improve our weaknesses. The goal for every teacher is to make sure the needs of each child is met. A new year will sometimes bring new beginnings and fresh starts. At POPCLC we start the year with a staff change. Our cook, Mary, left us in December. She was offered a full time position at her other job, an opportunity she couldn’t pass up. Our fresh start will be a new cook taking over the kitchen. A new year offers us the opportunity to say thank you to the many people that support us day after day. It provides us chance to stop and focus on the Blessings in our lives. We would like to thank the church members that welcome us as part of the POP Church community. We thank the Ladies of WELCA who remember us during American Education Week with special surprises.

8

We thank the POP Property Committee and the POP handymen. Through email or phone call, they are always close by to repair, update and fix whatever we ask. We thank the Church Council for their support and advice throughout the year. We thank Mr. John Pritchett for his donations. The children have enjoyed special books, craft items and stuffed animals over the past several months. We thank Linda DeJong, Deacon Shari and Pastor Matt for weekly chapel time with the children, special children’s masses and being there for the children’s performances throughout the year. We thank the Day Care Board for their continued guidance and support. We thank the parents of POPCLC for trusting us to care for their child(ren). And to the children who walk through our doors every day, they are our biggest Blessing. We never know what surprises will be waiting for us when we walk through our doors each morning but we do know that without POP community support we wouldn’t be strong enough to do it on our own.

Here’s to a Bright New Beginning! Thank You

Michele, Sue, Debbie, Sherry, Marlene, Chris, Carey,

Natasha, Kena

A Message from Bob DeJong

Council President Happy New Year!! In 2016 the spacecraft Juno will reach Jupiter, the summer Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro, the United Nations has declared 2016 the International Year of the Pulses (legumes), and Prince of Peace will read the New Testament. I hope you are planning in joining us as we learn about our faith. I am looking forward to the fellowship as we get together and discuss what we read, what we don’t understand, what we have questions about, and what surprised us. I believe we will have some great and interesting discussions. I will be reading “The Book of Matthew (The Smart Guide to the Bible)” along with my Bible, since Pastor Matt won’t be with me as I read. I even downloaded a Bible to my iPhone so as I can read whenever and wherever. I look forward to what God will do with and through us in 2016.

Matthew 10:19-20

"But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to say." For it is not you who speak, but it is the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

Acts 4:20 “…for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."

Many of us are taking the “NT Bible Challenge” and looking forward to reading the complete New Testament in about 90 days. Pastor Matt has it all mapped out for us and it will be a

good way to begin the New Year. Together we will explore the books of the New Testament and learn some new lessons, as well as

reread some more familiar

ones. As we go along we will read many verses that reflect the evangelism theme, such as those above. There are many in the New Testament; sometimes these verses may inspire us to reach out to our

neighbor with a helping hand, or perhaps they will stir a hunger to learn more. These verses may encourage us to

Page 21: Prince of Peace - Razor PlanetDear Prince of Peace family, As we marvel at the birth of the Christ child and move into the season of Epiphany, I am reminded that this marks a season

21

step out of our comfort zone and volunteer, maybe call a long lost member/friend and invite them back to worship. Whatever you gain from the “NT Challenge” or whatever it may prompt you to do, remember it is the Spirit of God at work in you and Evangelism in Action at Prince of Peace.

Our next committee meeting will be Thursday,

January 21, 12:30 PM.

WELCA

Greetings in the Year of Our Lord 2016 and hoping you had a very Merry Christmas 2015. The WELCA Christmas Party was held on December 7, 2015; all attendees were pleased with the event. We had a new Christmas tree which was donated by Pat Morrow and the

Page 22: Prince of Peace - Razor PlanetDear Prince of Peace family, As we marvel at the birth of the Christ child and move into the season of Epiphany, I am reminded that this marks a season

22

decorated tables added a festive air. Chef Chris’ dinner offerings were delicious and plentiful. Deb Thompson’s Christmas cake was good to look at and tasted good, too. Added to all this was our entertainment of the singing duo Maria Rose and Danny Elswig. They played and sang old and new Christmas songs and were well received by the party-goers. I wish to thank everyone who donated their time and expertise in planning and carrying out all the work to present our yearly party. And thank you to all our friends who participated. The Fruits for Vets project has just ended and we have an early count of approximately $600 to be donated to the Loch Raven facility through the American Legion Post 180. The money you give funds these purchases as needed, instead of all at once, allowing our vets to enjoy fresher food items over a longer period of time. Doris Shoul is our intermediate with the Legion Auxiliary. At the last the Steering Committee meeting, we decided to make a change to the Regular WELCA meetings in January and February, 2016. The 7 PM meeting will be eliminated in these two months, due to low attendance. In March, after Day Light Savings Time returns and the snows have flown away (hopefully), we will reinstitute the 7 PM meetings. So, remember, January 19th and February 16th meeting dates will only have the 10 AM meetings in the Narthex. Day of Renewal is scheduled for February 27, 2016 at Pearlstone in Reisterstown MD. All participants will be treated to a very nice luncheon and the guest speaker is Pastor Margaret Herst-Lane (the Bishop’s Wife). We would like to have a large contingent from Prince of Peace. We are planning to set up carpooling from PoP to Reisterstown. Reservations need to be called in by January 20th; please call Sharon Ormrod, at 443-691-6845 to reserve your space at

Page 23: Prince of Peace - Razor PlanetDear Prince of Peace family, As we marvel at the birth of the Christ child and move into the season of Epiphany, I am reminded that this marks a season

23

Pearlstone and to reserve a space in a car or your willingness to drive. Please consider joining us in attending this event. Bold Women’s Day is observed annually and will be on Sunday, February 28, 2016, the very next day after the Day of Renewal. Bold Women’s Day celebrates all Lutheran women who have acted or are acting boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. Whether you live out your bold story of faith in the workplace, family or community, your faith compels you to make a difference in the lives of others. And we always take this opportunity to honor and remember the many bold women in our own congregation, as well. Please join us on Bold Women’s Sunday. The next Steering Committee meeting is February 5, 2016 at 12:30 PM in Ellenberger Hall. This is an open meeting and all members are invited to attend. We’d love to have more ladies join in to help us lead into the future. The planning meetings, leading up to events like the Mother-Daughter Banquet, are a great place to suggest new ideas of all kinds. WELCA ministries at Prince of Peace are making a difference in everyone’s life and you can help. Please join us. Yours in Faith, Sharon Ormrod

Hearts and Hands Volunteers will meet on January 12, 2016. 10am-1pm in Ellenberger Hall. (Weather Permitting) Bring Scissors. In 2015 we completed 45 quilts. 23 quilts were donated to the Women’s and Children’s Crisis Center in Dundalk. 10 quilts were donated to the Salvation Army and 3 were given to the Homeless Shelter. The approximate size of a finished quilt is 60”x80”. There are quilt kits on the table, by the WELCA bulletin board. Help yourself. Many prayer shawls have been made and delivered to the Franklin Square Hospital Chaplaincy Department, our church family and friends. The size of a prayer shawl is 60 inches long by 18 inches wide. Hope- Compassion and the love of knitting/crocheting have been combined into a prayerful ministry and spiritual ministry which reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace, as well as in celebration of joy. Many blessings are prayed into every stitch. Shawls are given away unconditionally. The presentation of the Prayer Shawl enriches the giver as well as the recipient. Cancer Caps are handmade and distributed to the Franklin Square Hospital Oncology department and others. I believe something made from the heart helps heal the human spirit. Many crocheted/knitted baby caps have been donated to several hospitals, a ministry that helps the preemies and full-term term infants and a way to show others care. Thanks to everyone for all your donations in 2015. Thanks to all the volunteers who cut, pinned and sewed quilts.

We meet the 2nd Tuesday of selected months. (Check the bulletin, Vine, cyber POP) No experience necessary. If you prefer to cut and sew squares at home, materials and instructions are available. January Anniversaries

Cindy and Paul Hinkleman January 11 47 years A joyous wedding anniversary! May the love you share continue to grow with each passing year. “Beloved, let us love one another because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7 Congratulations to all who celebrate! If you find an “active” member’s name missing, it simply means that our church records are incomplete. We will be happy to add that information as you provide it to the church office. For assistance, please call 410-866-8766. Let us know of any omission so that we may update the church record and not miss you the next time.

Please remember to sign up for dedications for the new year! Dedications are not carried over from year to year. Please look at the bulletin board near the water fountain in the narthex for a schedule and price lists. Please fill out the Dedication sheet and put in the Parish Coordinator mailbox. Thank you.

Committee / Team Chairs at Prince of Peace As many of you know, much of the ministry at Prince of Peace is organized through a series of committees or teams. Responsible for unique areas of service, they are often the places where a great deal of work and planning take place to accomplish all that we do in the name of Christ. Below are the names of individuals
