Editors Letter
Welcome to the October issue of Princes Risborough View magazine.Hopefully all those now back at school have settled in well and those who are starting or returning to university or college have not found it too difficult to get back into routine after the long summer break.
It has been the most amazing summer for sporting events and it would be impossible not to be truly inspired by all the amazing athletes at the Paralympics. A fantastic event with many impressive results for Team GB. Well done to everyone who took part, either competing in the events or helping behind the scenes, everybody did the most brilliant job to make these games such a success.
On a local note, the Kop Hill Climb will have taken place by the time you read this. It is a wonderful event and is gaining in popularity each year. There is a lot of organisation
involved to make this a success, so thanks to all those people who make it possible.
We are extremely lucky to have excellent support from the local community to make this magazine such a success and we would like to say a big thank you to some of our deliverers who have stepped down for the moment. This does, however, leave a couple of vacancies so if you would like to deliver some magazines for us, please get in touch.
We also appreciate all your feedback. We really do want to hear what you like or dislike about the magazine and what you may like us to include in the future, so please get in touch with all your comments. We would love to hear ideas for more local articles and we also need more community news so, if you run an organisation that is not mentioned at present, please give us a call and we will include your information free of charge. ([email protected] or Tel: 07500 048230 )

Recipe of the Month
INGREDIENTS:
• 175g caster sugar• 3 small English eating apples,
peeled, cored and sliced• 4 red plums, halved, stones
removed and sliced• 100g raspberries• 100g strawberries, hulled and sliced• 100g blackcurrants or blueberries• 100g blackberries• 10 slices thick-sliced white bread• Extra fruit, to decorate
METHOD:
1. Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool.
2. Remove the crusts from the bread
slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half.
3. Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin.
4. Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup.
5. Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit.
Autumn Pudding Serves 6, Ready in 1 hour (plus overnight chilling)
Try this variation on summer pudding making the most of the early Autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious
English apples. Serve with softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really indulgent dessert.

Train a puppy; change a life – national charity calls for volunteers in Princes Risborough as it celebrates its 30th birthday.
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is calling for new volunteers in Princes Risborough to help train a puppy and change the life of a deaf person.
Hearing dogs transform deaf people’s lives by alerting their recipient to important household sounds and danger signals such as the alarm clock and smoke alarm in the home and in public buildings.
Puppy socialisers look after puppies for around 12 months, teaching basic obedience skills and introducing them to the different people and environments that they will need to become comfortable as a future hearing dog.
For more information on puppy socialising visit www.hearingdogs.org.uk or call 01844 348100.

Fern Foster, 15Monks Risborough
As the sun fills the speckled skies,
As the town of Risborough opens it's eyes,
As the songbirds begin to rise,
I sit on the hillside and I quietly sigh.
Whispering and dreaming of days gone by.
Of the Celtic Hill Fort, it's majesty untouched -
The red-haired warrior surveying his land, much
As the fields stretch on until golden sands
As the children wake up - and take
this hills beauty in their hands.
I look from Whiteleaf Cross and see -
Days etched out in history.
I look out, and see the white chalk run,
Over grassy meadows, towards the sun.

For most gardeners, Spring is the time to plant out the vegetable patch. That’s when the beans, peas and carrots go in. They are all harvested in late summer, and that’s more or less it until well after Christmas.
Well, canny veg growers can get the most out of their plot by planting a number of varieties in the autumn months. Seed potatoes can be planted now, and be ready for Christmas Day. We’ve grown these later potatoes for the last few years, and recommend instead of planting them in a bed, you grow them in a large container. The benefit of this is that if the weather does turn, you will be able to bring the tub into a greenhouse or covered area and pull them as and when you need them. Potatoes will struggle at this time of the year if they are hit by a heavy frost. The best varieties for later growing are Charlotte, Maris Peer and Duke of York.
If you just want to plant out - and leave the bed until the
spring, go for onions, shallots and garlic. We’ve found that these vegetables planted in the autumn, produce much bigger and better crops than those that go in during the spring.
The best onions are Troy - great to harvest early, Radar - which store very well indeed and Senshyu Yellow, a Japanese variety that can also be used as a Spring onion. We also grow a red onion, Electric - this has a really superb flavour and is one of the earliest varieties to be ready.
Simply place each onion in ths soil, with about 1cm out of the ground. One good tip is to check on the onion sets for the first week or so. Birds can pull the sets out before they form their roots. Once they have rooted, they’ll be fine. Just leave them be until May - when they’ll be fat and round and ready to pick.
Garlic varieties we recommend are Cristo which has a very strong, rich flavour, Germidour, a milder variety and Thermidore which ripens the earliest. As
with onions, the Garlic can be kept for many weeks before being used. For Shallots, go for the variety Jermor - and long bulb that again keeps very well.
This also the time to plant Fruit. Rhubarb does particularly well when the crowns are planted now. Once the frosts have got to the top of the plants, there’s really not much to see, under the soil the crowns are dormant - they’ll sleep away in your garden throughout the winter, then burst into life, full of energy once the weather warms up. The best varieties to choose are Timperley Early, Victoria and Champagne. All three are reliable, tasty and very easy to grow.
Autumn is the traditional time to plant soft fruit bushes - Blackcurrants, Blackberries, Blueberries, Gooseberries, Redcurrants and Raspberries are all now available and should be planted now, before the winter kicks in and the ground becomes too hard and cold. We have a great selection of fruit bushes - so do drop in and have a look.
Now the nights are beginning to draw in, it’s fuel time! We are now fully stocked with coal, kindling, logs etc - we offer a free local delivery service .
Happy Gardening.See you soon,
Simon, Alison,Edith the Jack Russelland all at Askett Nurseries.

Blood pressure is the pressure of the blood in your arteries and is measured in millimetres of mercury (mm Hg). It is recorded as two figures. The first one (top one) is called the systolic pressure and indicates the pressure in the arteries when your heart contracts. The second number (lower one) is known as the diastolic pressure and this represents the pressure in the arteries when your heart is resting between heartbeats.
A consistently high blood pressure is known as hypertension, for example if your blood pressure was 150/94, for example, and is sustained at this level for some weeks. However, a one off reading of 150/94 does not indicate hypertension as your blood pressure may change throughout the day, depending on circumstances
and exercise. It is also important to note that our blood pressure becomes a little higher anyway as we get older due to the lack of elasticity in the arteries as we age.
But if your blood pressure remains at a high level for some weeks, then it would be important to seek medical advice from your GP.
In most cases the cause of hypertension is unknown and is called primary hypertension. It may be due to a narrowing of the arteries which means the heart has to work harder. In some cases though, it is caused by another condition such as kidney disease or a hormone problem and this is known as secondary hypertension.
Although there may not be any symptoms to high blood pressure, it is a risk factor in developing cardiovascular disease, such as a heart attack or stroke, in the future. In the UK
cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of poor health.
So what can you do to avoid high blood pressure? A healthy lifestyle can go a long way in reducing your risk from hypertension and its complications.
• Losing some excess weight can make a big difference.
• Exercise regularly . Aerobic exercise, walking, swimming, dancing, digging are all beneficial.
• Eat a healthy diet and in particular, reduce your salt intake
• Drink alcohol in moderation
• Try to cut down on anxiety and stress in your life.
At The Luxton Clinic we sometimes, as a precaution, take a patients’ blood pressure when we consider their complaint may be associated with a circulatory disorder. Usually the result is fine but we do occasionally send a patient back to their GP for further investigation.

Join The Volunteer TeamAt the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway
The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway is operated, maintained and managed exclusively by volunteers, and every penny from fares and sales is ploughed back.
Its future depends totally on its volunteers. Could you be one of the team?
Vacancies! We need more people in all departments, to help look after the railway and to contribute to its projects, whether you can come along regularly or just once in a while.
So, whatever your abilities or skills, we have a place for you in our teams that tackle the various jobs needed to keep things running. And, if you are not sure what you might like to do, we are only too happy to entertain you to time at the railway, meeting the people running the various departments, so you can see first hand the vast range of possibilities open to you! Some areas require more training than others, but all are open to volunteers, from those who like meeting and dealing with the public, to those who gain more satisfaction from being behind the scenes. Full training is offered to help gain skills in Railway operation, even steam engine driving!
There are three main areas, in all of which we would welcome more help:
Passenger ServicesRailway operations need people to look after our passengers: these include station staff, and train stewards travelling on the trains. If you enjoy meeting the public, this could be for you.
Other areas in Passenger Services include catering; railways run on tea for both passengers, and, in particular at Chinnor,
the volunteers! We need people to run the Cambrian Buffet on the platform, and help with our special events. Finally, there is the shop which sells a range of goods and books.
Operations & Engineering DepartmentsOperations represents a high profile activity to our visitors, as it provides all train drivers, firemen, guards, and signalmen needed to make the trains run.
Engineering keeps the “hardware” going – coaches, wagons, signals, permanent way, locomotives and mechanical equipment. Again, training can be given to enable you to join a team.
Finally there is what has become known as the “Tuesday” gang – a group that gets together every Tuesday for general maintenance. This includes the platforms, buildings, public areas, painting, hedge trimming – anything that keeps the Railway clean and tidy for our visitors.
How do I volunteer? If you think you may be interested, or would like to come and see what is involved, please talk the possibilities over by contacting Dave Maxey, on either 07718 003132 or [email protected].
We are all friendly, but would welcome some help!

Record For Posterity
By Mike Payne
It is always sad when a town loses a building that has stood for many years, but one tip I can give to any budding historian out there, if you know of a building about to be demolished then make sure you take photos of it before it is pulled down.
That was exactly what happened when long-standing Risborough resident David Bowler had the presence of mind to take some photos of the Town Farm being demolished a few years ago. The farm, belonging to the Woods family, is long remembered for its unique position off the Market Square in the centre of town. Thanks to David we now have some photos of how it used to be just before it disappeared forever.
The Exhibition we held during the Festival week was again a big success and we had lots of visitors, all very interested in our photos and memorabilia on display. The good thing about these events is that it always encourages people to bring other items to us. Two items
that we had given to us this time included a football medal from a long forgotten league, and a souvenir spoon presented as a prize at the 1969 Monks Risborough Show. The football medal was from the 1938-9 season, and it was a runners-up award for finishing second in the ‘Princes Risborough & District Football League’. I must confess to not knowing about the existence of this league and I will now try and find out some more information about it, especially as to which teams took part. The spoon was a lovely item and is one of several items that I know of that has been given as a prize over the years at the annual Horticultural Show. If you have also received prizes that you still have I would love to hear from you.
Regular readers of this column will also know of my request some time ago for pictures of our local shopkeepers over the years. Again thanks to David Bowler, I now have a super photo of Robin Ball behind the counter of his shop in the High Street. I also have a lovely picture of David’s Mum, who was one of my first ever work colleagues in the Corner Shop. Mrs Bowler was also there when the shop was called Bonhams.
Other items of interest that have surfaced since I last wrote for you include pictures from a Royal visit by the Duke of Gloucester to the British Legion, a picture of the Princes Risborough school cross country team, taken outside the school that was then in Berryfield Road, and a cricket team from the same school that shows such famous Risborough sportsmen as Nibbo Makepeace, Neil Carter and the much-missed Terry Larkin in the line-up. I’ve also received books, newspaper cuttings and many other photos, including several from the prefab estate in Brooke Road, which are rare indeed. This is all down to the power of this column and the generosity and enthusiasm of you the readers.
The Heritage Society thank you all most sincerely, and please keep searching those photo albums, lofts, sheds and drawers! There is lots more out there.
Email Mike at [email protected] to find out more about the Princes Risborough Heritage Society or ring him on 01844 347511.

Town ShowThe Town Show was held on the 14th July, the second Saturday of the Risboro` Festival. Over 40 people entered at least one of the classes in the Show - a significant increase in entrants compared the last few years. The weather in the preceding months, adversely affected the number of entries in some of the flower and garden produce classes but overall, even in these classes, quality was surprisingly high. In the domestic classes, it was a bumper year for entries, competition being particularly keen in the baking and preserves classes. Entries in the other non-gardening classes were also well up on previous years with the photographic classes being particularly well subscribed.

Princes Risborough View MagazineWe thought we would use this small space to express how pleased we are to be in the position to promote all these great organisations and events. The Town Show looks as if it was a great success and with significantly more entries than in previous years. It would seem that with our involvement, that included the printing and delivery of flyers and the promotion of the event on these pages and in the magazine, has helped to aid this success. Please let us know if we can help do the same for your community group. We would like to hear from any new organisations and remind everyone that you will be promoted on our website as well. www.chilterndirectories.co.uk.
