Hello families, Hope you are all well and have been keeping warm on these very cold early winter days. Now at the end of Term 2, I’d like to say a big thank you to all parents and carers of students at Lalor North Secondary College. I need to say thank you because it has become clear to me since I arrived at this college, that parents and carers in our community feel very strongly about the level and type of education their children are engaged in. I know this because of the number of phone calls and conversations I have enjoyed. You have expressed both concerns and satisfaction regarding many matters that directly effect programs and relationships at our school and, have done so in a spirit of collaboration and community growth, thank you. I hope you continue to feel comfortable approaching both myself and staff at our school with matters both positive and in deed, those in need of attention.
Speaking of Attention! Here’s a snippet which you might find interesting and even worth discussing around the dinner table? What do students think about this information? Do they see it as interesting in relation to their own experience of learning?
Celebrating half a year of learning! So, this week all parents/carers will receive their child/ren’s official Semester 1 written report, these will be posted on ‘Compass’. This is an important time for students and I hope that your discussions as a family around the reports, are helpful and forward focused; the one lesson we do want all young people to understand is that we can even improve on strong outcomes and go forward to enhance our skills in any area of learning, even when our outcomes are not what we expected. I would like all students to understand that it is only through reflection on previous results

that we can seek to understand better. With support from our families and teachers, more hard work and repetition, we can get closer to our true potential. I believe this and want our students to believe it too, to feel confident in asking for help and in mustering the courage to reach for higher and higher levels of skill. Please feel free to contact your child’s Home Group or Subject Teacher if you need to discuss any concerns regarding reports. It is best to do this before the school holidays to en-sure that students do not experience unnecessary anxiety over their report’s content.
‘Pin Top’ Mandarin Language School at LNSC
Starting in Term 3 we will be hosting the ‘Pin Top’ Man-darin Language School every Saturday. This is a great opportunity for our students as well as children from the surrounding community, to learn a global language that will place them well in the future. As we know, learning an Asian language will support future employ-ment and world economic engagement. If you think you might be interested in enrolling please see the in-formation attached to this newsletter. We welcome our new partners and hope that this program will provide mutual benefits as we work as community members and co-learners. Welcome ‘Pin Top’.
A Thank You to Staff
To all LNSC staff I would like to say a very big thank you for the ongoing commitment you have made in leading our students across Years 7 to 12 in the first half of 2019. Your work is professionally impressive and I am excited about what we can achieve in improving learn-ing outcomes for all of our students as we go forward into the second half of 2019. Well done and thank you very much.
Happy, happy and safe holidays everybody!
Kindest regards,
Vicki Watson

Assistant Principal Report
The College Newsletter
From now on the College Newsletter will be sent to you by email and placed on the college website. This will mean that this important communication will be readily accessi-ble to parents at their leisure in a convenient digital for-mat. Saving paper is another important priority for us in making this decision.
Semester 1 Reports
We advise parents and guardians that their child’s mid-year written reports will be available for access via Com-pass on Wednesday 26th June at 3.30pm. Compass Login details have been made available to parents, however if you have trouble logging into Compass, don’t hesitate to contact the General Office. Alternatively you are welcome to visit the General Office and ask for a hard copy of the Semester Report.
Once again I emphasise a reminder about punctuality. There remains a very small number of students who are arriving late to school and therefore miss the very im-portant introductory part of the lesson. We are very keen
CLUE: All word can also be found throughout the newsletter.
for all students to be in class before 8.50am so they are in the right frame of mind to start the lesson.
Parent Survey
Thank you parents and guardians who have already completed the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) survey which we sent out at the beginning of last week. This is an important survey to help our school community determine which will be the 3 values which will define our college culture, and which behaviours will reflect these values. If you are yet to complete the survey use the following link:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NV3VFMC
We will keep the survey open until Monday 17th July.
College Uniform, Attendance and Punctuality
Last month I reminded parents and guardians about the need
to ensure their children wear their college uniform to school
every day. I want to thank parents who have responded to this
request and organised their children into the correct uniform.
Your efforts in this regard are much appreciated.
Chris Peake Assistant Principal

Mill Park Primary School
Recording @ Lalor North College
Last Friday we hosted Mill Park Primary School in our recording
studio. The Mill Park Singers choir recorded ‘Titanium’ by David
Guetta/Sia, ‘High Hopes’ by ‘Panic! At the Disco.’ and the Year 5
Rock Band recorded ‘We Will Rock You’ by Queen. Their Year 6
Rock Band recorded ‘Sunflower’ by Post Malone/Swae Lee. The
students got real insight into recording music live in a studio
setting. They had an absolute ball and totally rocked it! They are
now eagerly waiting to hear the
recordings which are currently
being mixed. The Mill Park stu-
dents will be presented with a CD
of the recording at an assembly in
Term 3 and will all get a copy.
They’ll all be famous!!!

The year 8, boys Interschool sport, soccer team went in
confident for their first couple of games against Reservoir

a team. The other teams had very good defence skills.
George made an awesome goal at the end of the game
and we had a big celebration. Thank to
everyone who took part and a special
thanks to Ms Hayse and Ms Benincasa
who facilitated the game.

The Free Kick
Grey clouds covered the night sky like a blanket protecting the earth
below. A soft cool breeze drifts over the field. The night air fills with
excitement.
Speeding against the defence. SLAM! all of a sudden my head hit the
hard ground. I jump to my feet, out of the corner of my eye I see a RED
CARD! It was my turn to shine, my turn to change the final score. Only
minutes remaining in the game. My chance to make a difference, I take
my place.
Beyond the city lights, standing in front of the goals, alone with my
thoughts. My body frozen, my heart pounding in my chest. Only one
thing on my mind, no time to question, no time for negativity.
With an open mind I can hear the music of this city. My moment has
come, let my inner spirit run free. Endless possibilities await me. I see
no fear, failure is not an option. Take a deep breath .... here it is.
Abruptly the silence was broken by the sound of my boot making con-
tact with the ball. As the ball soars to dizzy heights I dare to dream.
Victory was close I could almost taste it’s sweetness; CRASH! The ball
hits the back of the net. The final whistle blows. Triumphant tears roll
down my cheeks. Happiness overwhelming me - the free kick.

Australian Business week occurs at Lalor North College from June 17th to 22nd involving year 11 students. This activity has a large focus on team work and requires a variety of skills such as financial, artistic, organisational and leadership. Stu-dents are assigned to a team by their teachers. The teams are in com-petition with each other and the students take this very seriously. They are graded by appointed judges on displays, oral presentations, written company reports and an advertisement they put together for their team. The financial success of their team is graded by a comput-er simulation. Student’s feedback at the end of the week indicated strongly that they not only enjoyed the activity but they also learned a lot about team work and got a better understanding of ca-reer choices in the future. Year 8 Cells in Science In Science this term, Year 8 students have stud-ied cells as part of the Biology unit. They have learnt about how to differentiate between ani-mal and plant cells and are able to identify im-portant cell structures. Students learnt how to stain cells such as onion and cheek cells and how to use a light microscope to view their speci-mens magnified 400 times. As part of their as-sessment for this unit they created a labelled cell model and wrote a report. It always lovely to see their models and students use their creativity in their Science studies! City School Experience was an amazing experi-
ence. We learnt so much about the city we
live in, how to catch public transport and how
to act when you are in the city.
Some amazing and fun things we did at City
School were; looking at terrific graffiti art,
going to fun educational places like the Mel-
bourne Museum and the MCG and Learning
about homelessness and marginalised people
at The Big Issue. We also participated in fun
activities like ArtVo, a place that makes 2D
and 3D art through photographs and had
some independent discovery time, where we
completed the Amazing Race and spent time
with our friends.
We learned so much about navigating our big
city, we learned the locations of prominent
landmarks and we even stopped by McDon-
alds for a snack.
I would encourage people in Year 9, next year
to go to have a fun, exciting week like we did
during City School Experience.
Katelyn, 9B
City School was very fun. My favourite activities were the MCG tour, ArtVo and the Amaz-
ing Race. I liked the MCG tour because you got to see where everything happens and how
everything happens. It was very interesting. ArtVo was fun because their pictures are in-
teresting and fun to take when you are with your friends. The Amazing Race was really fun
because we were allowed to find our own way around and we became familiar with what
was around us. It was all fun because we were with our friends.
Alana, 9B
I think City School was amaz-
ing. It was really good and I
learnt a lot. We had to get up
very early and catch the train
from Epping Station into the
city. I liked ArtVo because we
could be the art.
Veronica , 9B
City School was really fun. It has been one of
my favourite excursions at Lalor North College
so far. It was a really eye opening experience,
which made me think differently about the
city. My favourite part was the amazing race,
where we explored different parts of the city.
Yousif, 9B
I think City School was a fun experience. I enjoyed
doing the tour of the Old Melbourne Gaol. When
we did a tour of the Gaol, we learnt about many
different lifestyles in gaol and how they treated
people. We also learnt about the different types
of punishments in the olden days. It was a fun
experience.
Natalia, 9B
The most enjoyable thing I did at City School
was ArtVo. We got to experience different
things through paintings such as surfing,
walking a lion and a red carpe. I have taken
photos to remember this wonderful experi-
ence. I would love to do it again.
Mohammed , 9B
