Principal’s Message: Dear Gibbons School Family,
What an amazing February we have had with so many
events taking place at Gibbons School. Our Elementary
students participated in “Write In Week” with a number of
guest speakers from our community helping us with our
week. We had speakers such as Marty Chan and Alexis
Chute. Thank you to everyone involved!
Our Leadership students have had a ‘pink’ photo booth to
celebrate Pink Shirt Day on February 23rd. Earlier in the
month our elementary ‘Vandalism Busters‘ organized a
lunch hour dance to raise money for the playground. They
did a wonderful job and fun was certainly had!
With March comes many more happenings before Spring
Break. Our band classes will head off to Band Camp, our
Leadership class will continue to visit at the Gibbons
Seniors Centre. Our Grade 9s are getting ready for their
transition to High School with a Sturgeon Composite High
School visit to name a few. We also have busy parents
with a group of volunteers working on the playground
progress. They have been busy collecting letters, meeting
with the town and school division and making final
decisions on the plan. Please keep updated with our
Facebook page if you like, it’s titled ‘Gibbons School’.
Please welcome our student teacher Ms. Chattargoon
who comes to us form the University of Alberta, She is
working alongside Mrs. Deb Clark until the end of April.
We look forward to our conversations we will have with
you at Parent teacher interviews on March 8 and 9
between 4-7pm. Please email teachers to set up an
alternate time if the evening of Interviews do not work.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Wilkinson
FYI: EXTRA SNACKS & LUNCHES We try to have extra food available in the office for students who
have forgotten lunches or who might need an extra snack once in
a while. We are happy to provide this, however we do ask the
student to call home to speak to someone or leave a message so
that parents are aware.

Lunch Time / Appointments / Leaving Early
A closed campus exists to assist the school in ensuring a safe and
caring environment. Students are not allowed off school premises
unless a parent contacts the school via phone/note to have the
student attend an appointment or be involved in a specific activity.
Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy,
please contact Mrs. Kristine Wilkinson, Principal, or Mrs. Darla Clark,
Vice Principal.
Severe Nut Allergies
We have students who have severe allergic reactions to nuts. If
exposed to nuts, their reaction may place them in a life-threatening
situation. In providing as safe an environment as possible, we
encourage our students to not share their food with others. If students
are bringing treats for others, we ask that they be free of nut products.
Your assistance in limiting these products being brought into the school
is appreciated. We would also ask parents/guardians to inform the
school if their child(ren) have any life threatening allergies so that we
may better protect your children’s health. Please contact the school
office at (780) 923-2240.
Absentee Check
If your child will be absent for the day please contact the school as
soon as possible at 780-923-2240, or send an email to:
[email protected]. Absentee checks will be done each
morning, and automated calls will be made to verify attendance for
those students marked absent.

Last month we looked at “Square Breathing” as a way to help with anxiety, stress, and sleep. If square breathing didn’t work for you, or it did and you are interested in trying another type of breath, you may also enjoy “Wave Breathing”.
The amount you hold, inhale, and exhale can be modified, depending on your lung capacity. What’s important is to make sure the inhale and exhale are equal, with the holding of the breath being less than the inhale/exhale.
My favorite way to use wave breathing is by closing my eyes and picturing an actual wave, continuously moving up and down. Like many breathing techniques, wave breathing helps enhance the flow of oxygen in your body and can aid in slowing down the brain and nervous system, allowing you to find some clarity. Controlling your breath can also help you regulate yourself and provide some much needed calmness during the day. Another important factor in calming and regulating ourselves is SLEEP. A good night's sleep is crucial for our wellbeing.
Part of a good night’s sleep is quality sleep, where we get into Stage 3 REM (dream state) sleep. Without enough quality sleep your physical and mental health (your outlook on life, energy level, motivation/enthusiasm, emotions, and more) can be negatively affected.
Many people nowadays sleep with their phones beside them, which can disrupt their sleep throughout the night, and negatively affect the amount of quality sleep you get. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 9-11 hrs of sleep for kids aged 6-13 and 8-10hrs of sleep for kids aged 14-17. For more information check out the sleepfoundation.org - I would especially recommend searching up the article on how sleep affects school performance.
Thanks for reading. =) Ms. Ebbers

BOSTON PIZZA & GIBBONS
SCHOOL
make fundraising easy and tasty!
Boston Pizza and Gibbons School are
continuing to partner for
Operation Education for the remainder
of the 2016-2017 school year! It is a co-
operative fundraising program designed
to foster a sense of community where
students, peers, educators and families
can effectively raise funds towards
specific school related ventures.
Please turn in your original Boston Pizza
receipts from all Alberta Boston Pizza
locations dated January 1, 2017 - June
30, 2017 to the drop box in Gibbons
School office. Boston Pizza will give
back 5% before taxes of all the receipts
to Gibbons School PAC. This money
will be used throughout the school.
It’s Casino Time Again! August 9 & 10, 2017 Century Casino, St. Albert
Working a casino is big easy money for Gibbons School. We have the opportunity to make $25000 in 2 days. This money is used for the playground equipment, technology, sports
equipment and for many other great things in our school.
For the success of this casino we need parent volunteers. These volunteers are given an amazing meal for every shift worked. If you are interested and would like to give your time to a great cause, please contact Jen Kobza (780)914-5216.
