Principal’s Message Giinagay Families, Elders and Friends,

The School Newsletter is a vitally important line of communication with families and the wider community, especially taking into account the current pandemic restrictions limiting face to face visits to the school. Please make the time to read the School Newsletter whether it is a hardcopy delivered by your child or on our FaceBook page. School Newsletters can also be located on the school’s webpage. Staying Safe On a daily basis all staff and students are reminded of the following actions to stay safe at school:

Washing hands frequently with soap and water before and after eating and after going to the toilet.

Covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze. Coughing or sneezing into your elbow. Correctly using and disposing of tissues. Avoid touching your face.

Limiting physical contact when greeting people. Limiting physical contact in the playground.

Drinking from individual water bottles. Staying at home and seeing a doctor if you are feeling unwell. Dropping Off and Picking Up Students Until further notice families are asked to drop off and collect their children from the school gate that opens onto the school carpark. Thank you for your cooperation and patience as this will significantly reduce the possible adult to adult transmission of any viruses. Change Of Travel Arrangements

To prevent any unnecessary confusion as well as students becoming highly anxious

families are requested to call the Office no later than 2.30 pm if there is a

change to a student’s drop off or pick up arrangement. Also, any change to a residential address whether it is short or long term needs to be shared with the school ASAP. School Bus The School Bus will be operating as normal. Uncle Dean has returned to his School Bus driving position. Please note, if needed Uncle Dean in an emergency he can be contacted on his mobile - 0487 713 539.

National Reconciliation Week is celebrated each year from 27 May to 3 June. The dates

commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey—the anniversaries of the

successful 1967 referendum and the Mabo decision.

Why

is Reconciliation

important.

Reconciliation has

no meaning if it is

not aimed at

achieving equality

in life expectancy,

education,

employment and

all the important,

measurable areas

of disadvantage.

equality, closing

this gap and

building

relationships to do

this.

This Week is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and the ongoing contributions they make to Australian society. encourages everyone to take pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, their strengths and their connection to culture.

I was amazed by the disco ball. The event was great

June the 3rd is Mabo Day and commemorates the courageous efforts of Eddie Koiki Mabo to overturn the fiction of terra nullius (land belonging to no-one), the legal concept that Australia and the Torres Strait Islands were not owned by Indigenous peoples because they did not ‘use’ the land in ways Europeans believed constituted some kind of legal possession. This idea was used to give ‘legitimacy’ for the British and later colonial and Australia governments to allow the dispossession of all Indigenous peoples of their land and access to it. Whether an Aboriginal group lost its land to colonial settlement/invasion in 1788, 1880 or 1970, the argument was that they never owned it, never had internationally recognisable legal entitlement to it and therefore could be considered trespassers on Crown land and would not be able to claim any compensation for its loss.

Koiki Mabo and his legal team fought hard to demonstrate that he and his people had

traditional land ownership systems on Mer. The case went to the High Court. Unfortunately

Eddie Mabo died 5 months before the historic decision came on 3 June 1992 that ‘native title’

did exist and it was up to the people of Mer to determine who owned the land.

Before reading a new book or even, a familiar story, take a couple of minutes to talk about

the story first. Use the language and the pictures in the book as this will prompt

recognition of the words and story ideas once the child begins the story. This helps

them to keep the story in their head.

To begin reading, ask your child to put a finger either side of a sentence and encourage

them to know these words go together and need to be read in a phrased and fluent

manner.

Encourage smooth reading at a reasonable speedy pace, not slow word by word reading.

Encourage expression and predicting what is going to happen next e.g. “Oh that’s right,

this is where the clever fox steals the cheese”

When your child experiences some difficulty with the story, ask them to go back to the

beginning and read up to the problem word again. Ask them what word would make

sense check the beginning sound does this help? Ask your child if they can recognise a

pattern or smaller word in the word e.g. called. If so, point out what they already know

and use the other letters in the word to solve the problem. Re-read more than once.

When the book is finished, ask a simple question about an event in the book, a character

or perhaps their favorite part. Read this book a few more times (over the coming days)

to encourage fluency and the success that comes when they know that they can do it.

Tell them what you liked about their reading of the story e.g. how the story sounded, the

way they used their voice for a character or to build up an event.

These are strategies we have taught the children to use when they discover some-

thing they are not sure about in a new book. We do not just ask them to sound a

word as many sight words do not work that way e.g. what, know, who. We ask the

children to search for information in other ways.

Head Lice

Usually 7 to 10 days.

Symptoms

Itchy scalp, white specks stuck near the base of

the hairs; lice may be found on the scalp.

Do I need to keep my child home?

No, as long as head lice management is ongoing.

How can I prevent spread?

Family, friends and classroom contacts should be

examined and treated if infested. Clothing and bedding

should be washed in hot water.

Ringworm

Time from exposure to till illness

Varies (may be several days).

Symptoms

Small scaly patch on the skin surrounded by a pink ring.

Do I need to keep my child home?

Yes, until the day after fungal treatment has begun.

How can I help prevent spread?

Careful hand washing.

Impetigo (School Sores)

Time from exposure to illness

1 to 3 day

Symptoms

Small red spots change into blisters that fill up with pus

and become crusted; usually on the face, hands or scalp.

Do I need to keep my child home?

Yes, until antibiotic treatment starts. Sores should be covered with watertight dressings.

How can I prevent spread?

Careful hand washing.

Signs and symptoms of Threadworm

Symptoms of threadworm infection may include an itchy bottom, irritability and behavioural changes, but most people have no symptoms.

Treatment

A single dose therapy is usually effective and is given to the infected person and each family member at the same time. You can buy worm treatment from pharmacies, without a prescription. It is not necessary to treat children on a regular basis, just in case they have worms.

Prevention

Exclusion of people with worms from childcare, preschool, school and work is usually not necessary. If there are loose bowel motions, exclusion should be for 24 hours after the diarrhoea has ceased.

Make sure children wash their hands after using the toilet and before eating.

Parents should seek medical treatment for infected children.

Change bed linen and underwear daily for

several days after treatment. Normal hot water washing of clothes and bed linen will kill threadworm eggs.

Clean toilet seats and potties regularly.

Keep children’s fingernails short.
