Celia Lashlie worked for 15 years
withinthePrisonService,startingin
December1985asthefirstwoman
toworkasaprisonofficerinamale
prisoninNewZealand.Herfinalrole
within theServicewas asManager
of ChristchurchWomen’s Prison, a
positionsheleftinSeptember1999.
Celia,whohasadegree inanthropologyandMaori, is the
motheroftwoadultchildren.Shenowworksonanumberof
projects,allofwhicharelinkedtoimprovingthelivesofat-risk
childrenandempoweringfamiliestofindtheirownsolutions
tothechallengestheyface.
InSeptember2004,shecompletedthe‘GoodMan’project.
Theproject,whichfacilitateddiscussionwithinandbetween
25boys’schoolsthroughoutNewZealand,aimedtocreate
aworkingdefinitionofwhatmakesagoodmaninthe21st
century.
Whatarosefromtheprojectwasasignificantinsightintothe
mindsofteenageboys,andwhattheyarefeelingatthisperiod
intheirlives.Therearealsosomechallengingsuggestionsfor
parents,aswellasacallforwomeninparticulartorethinkthe
waytheyinteractwiththemenintheirlives—theirsonsand
theirhusbands—iftheywanttoseetheirsonsbecomethe
goodmentheywantthemtobe.
She has written two books; The Journey to Prison: Who
goes and why,andHe’ll Be Ok: Growing Gorgeous Boys into
Good Men.

in full time specialist practice in Melbourne and then in
Auckland. Peter later took a position as a senior lecturer

Monty obtained his primary dental degree at Punjab, India
in 1983 and completed hisMDS in Paediatric Dentistry at

1997, also at Leeds. He completed his FDSRCS (Eng) in
