TRANSCRIPT
Principal’s Message This past month we have experienced a few “missions” in our school. We have all been involved in one way or another with the DRIVE AWAY HUNGER campaign and with the FEEL GOOD RIPPLE campaign. Two things really stick out for us with these events.
1. They are examples of us as a “church” (yes, I mean the school) of reaching out to the “poor” of our wider community.
2. They make us aware of the needs of others and enable us to stand in solidarity with the “poor.” We are approaching Advent; a time of preparation for the birth of Jesus. Traditionally, it is a time when we also help those in need. Who are the Poor? When we use this term we think of those in slums, in other countries, those who go to soup kitchens and live on the streets. But the poor can be very close. They can be in our own families and in our own schools. We can be poor when we feel rejected and unloved or ignored. When we experience or see this poverty, this is when we must become the Church. We must help, share, confess, forgive and gather round the table of the Lord so we can heal wounds of ourselves and of others. Remember, Jesus became poor in order to help us. This November and this Advent can we become poor in order to reach out to others and truly show the life Jesus brings us?
SCHOOL SIGN Finally, the sign is up and running. Thank you to all parents who over the years have contributed to the sign. We are still getting to know the software in order to maximize the usage of this sign. As with all new installations, it is impossible to meet all needs with this sign. The physical configuration of our school, vandalism protections etc. are all things we have to keep in mind when doing anything at our school. Feel free to say thank you to our school council members!

REPORT CARDS & INTERVIEW Report cards for both Elementary and Junior High will be sent home with students on Friday, November 13. Parent/Student/Teacher interviews will be held on the evenings of
Wednesday, Nov. 18 (5 - 8 p.m.) Thursday, Nov. 19 (4:30 – 7:30 p.m.)
Parents may phone the school starting Thursday, November 12th to book times for these interviews. Interviews are more productive and helpful for the student when the student accompanies the parent(s) to these interviews. There will be no school Friday, November 20 in lieu of interviews. For your convenience, the canteen will be open from 5:00 – 7:00 both evenings of interviews. FIRE CHIEF FOR THE DAY!
Congratulations to Drew in 2B who won the Fire Chief of the day contest. The grade 2B class was given the opportunity to meet with City of Lethbridge firefighters, as well as their mascot, Sparky. They were given a brief talk on fire safety, and then students got a chance to sit in the driver’s seat in the ladder fire truck, and press a few of the buttons that controlled different parts of the truck. The ladder was raised and the students were amazed with how high the ladder could go. They each had an opportunity to meet with Sparky, and were then given gifts from the fire department. The students were very excited to have this opportunity! This was a good chance for the students to see the important work carried out by our firefighters. FEEL GOOD ………. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the students in 7HH for demonstrating their sense of social justice and service in the community! The 7HH class had the opportunity to help SERVUS Credit Union launch their ‘Feel Good Ripple’ project from October 1 – October 14, 2009. This project involved students receiving $10.00 to make someone’s day. With that in mind, our students went to work sharing their good intentions with the community. Students generally focused on three main themes: the environment, animal protection, and community service. Students posted their ‘Feel Good Ripple’ on the web site and we encourage our community to take an opportunity to read the many creative ways students choose to make a difference (www.feelgoodripple.ca). On October 14, 2009 the students presented their projects to SERVUS Credit Union and the media. The students were wonderful ambassadors for our school in print (the Lethbridge Herald) and on radio (95.5 and 107.7). We would like to thank SERVUS Credit Union for giving us this opportunity and our administration for supporting and encouraging our students. It is with great respect and pride that we; as teachers and a school community, would like to express our gratitude to these students for reminding us what actions from the heart can do to spark change in our community. God Bless Each of You, Tracy Jans & Heather Hay (co-ordinating teachers) FARM CREDIT CANADA & FLVT DRIVE AWAY HUNGER CAMPAIGN On October 15 the representatives from Farm Credit Canada arrived in their tractor to pick up the food collected by the students. Each class brought their collections down to the canteen to be weighed and packed out to the tractor. As a school, we collected 1,152 pounds of food for the local food bank. Notable classes were the PreKindergarten students who raised 253.5 pounds and Mr. Templin’s grade one class with a total of 122.4 pounds. Thanks to all the families who helped to support the campaign. Some of the pictures taken on that day are on the website at www.holyspirit.ab.ca/flvt.
SCHOOL COUNCIL WORKSHOP Recently our school council has participated in two workshops. These are to provide us with some guidance as to the roles and responsibilities that a school council has. In the coming months there will be efforts made to improve communication from council to parents. We ask that you watch the newsletter for further details. School Council Parking lot committee continues to work hard on improving the safety of students in our parking area. All Parents please DRIVE SLOWLY AND PARK APPROPRIATELY WHEN DROPPING OFF OR PICKING UP OUR CHILDREN.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
Parent Council
Chair: Paul Rocca Vice-Chair: Brenda Dudas Past Chair: Tina Zimmer
Treasurer: Michelle Clymer Secretary: Melanie Hill
Communications: Jennifer Alexander & Angela Marconi E.C.S Parent Representative: Vacant
Please contact Angela (320-9306) or Jennifer (381-4437) if you’d like to join our council. We’d be
happy to have you!
Room Rep’s Needed!
If you are interested in becoming a room rep, please contact your child’s teacher or sign up on our bulletin board in the gathering space.
Room Reps will work with the Parent Council to promote school council events that pertain to their classes. Reps will be asked to contact parents to provide the necessary volunteers to support and carry out tasks as
required. Room reps will report any questions or concerns to the attention of any member of the Parent Council Executive. The time associated with the position is not onerous and will benefit the students and
school community as a whole.
Students, parents and the West Side Community surrounding Father Leonard Van Tighem will find their day a bit brighter as they will be greeted by our new electronic message board as they near the school. After years of planning and fund-raising efforts on behalf of the parents, students and staff of Father Leonard Van Tighem, the sign has finally been installed and is ready for use. The 8'H x 9.5'W sign and message board can be seen as far away as University Drive and the Safeway parking lot. The sign will be used as a means to communicate not only to the parents and students of the school, but also the community as a whole. It will be used to communicate what is happening in the school, reminders of important dates for students and parents, and also as a means to celebrate the successes and good work the school does in the community. The sign will assist in helping to communicate to the school community the efforts of the staff, parents and students to improve in all aspects of the school such as academics, safe and caring environments, and their spiritual growth. The sign became a reality due to the tremendous generosity of the school’s parents who actively participate in and reinforce the school motto of "Many Hands Building a Better World". Paul Rocca, School Council Chair
F.L.V.T Environmental bags are still available in the office for $5 each. They are beautiful bags and all the money collected will go toward school based projects determined on a
needs basis.
Fundraising Committee:
A fundraising committee is in the works! We are looking for people to form an ongoing committee. If interested, please contact Laureen Whiting at [email protected]
Parking Committee:
Father Leonard Van Tighem now has a parking committee. This committee was created to ensure that our
children are safe in our parking lot and to guide parents to drive and park legally and safely. We are committed to keeping our children safe at our school and ask that parents please follow the rules in our
school zone and in our very own parking lot. We will be giving our parking lot a “face-lift” in the up-coming months. New parking stalls will be created and there will be a “drop off” zone and a “no stopping zone”
within the loop. This will allow the children and families in our school who require handicapped parking to have their own spot without having to worry. We will keep you informed with the changes as they arise.
Thank you for your understanding.
Kari Bulger – Chair of Parking Committee
Next Meeting: November 25th at 7:00 pm in the school Library. Everyone is welcome to attend!

PRAYER
Tuesday November 10 Memorial of Saint Leo the Great
Saint Leo was Pope from 440 – 461. During this time, Atila the Hun tried to destroy Rome and its citizens. Saint Leo persuaded him to turn back and not to harm the city. His faith and courage are an example for all
of us and especially for leaders today.
Let us pray:
Almighty God, We pray that leaders everywhere,
In our world, in our church, And in our communities,
Will follow the example of Pope Leo. May they serve you, And use their power
To create a just and peaceful world. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen CATHOLIC EDUCATION SUNDAY
On November 8 we celebrate Catholic Education throughout the province of Alberta. It is an opportunity to pray and give thanks for the wonderful gift of Catholic education.
Holy Spirit Catholic Schools serves over 4300 students in the communities of Coaldale, Lethbridge, Picture Butte, Pincher Creek, Taber and surrounding areas. We have a staff of nearly 500 who are proud to be witnesses of faith in our 13 schools.
Our theme this year is “Good News for All”. Our Catholic schools are filled with the good news of Christ Jesus. At the heart of our educational purpose is the person of Jesus Christ. He is our inspiration. We nurture a Gospel climate through our learning environment and permeate our faith in all that we do. Our Catholic theology, philosophy, practices and beliefs form all aspects of school life.
Catholic education is good news for all. As a division we are proud of the positive impact on the lives of children and families that we have served throughout our history. Our schools offer diverse programming to meet the needs of our students. Through a commitment to address the needs of the 21st century learner, we will continue to graduate globally-aware citizens who will participate, as leaders, in our community and beyond.
This year as we pray for Catholic Education, we pray not only for our schools, but for our entire Catholic community. We ask that all of us spread the good news by working together, walking in unison, and sharing God’s message within our communities. Have a wonderful Catholic Education Sunday and God Bless!

PARENTS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE Reprinted with the permission of The Parent Institute RESEARCH REVEALS DISCIPLINE THAT REALLY WORKS
Think about how your parents raised you. What discipline methods did they use? In a study, even if parents didn’t agree with how they were disciplined as children, many used these same approaches themselves. For example, adults who were yelled at as kids were more likely to yell as parents – even if they thought yelling didn’t work, according to the research. In order to discipline well, consider what you believe will work. Experts say certain methods are most effective. For example:
Acknowledge good behavior. What are the most important behaviors for your child to learn? When you see them, take notice. Say, “It’s nice that you invited the new girl to sit with you at lunch. I bet that made her feel good.”
Use natural and logical consequences. When your child does something inappropriate, choose a natural or logical response, if possible. A natural consequence of forgetting homework is getting a zero. A logical consequence of losing an item is having your child replace it.
Plan ahead. Talk with your child about discipline. Why is it helpful? How does it work? After considering her ideas, list basic rules and consequences. Then follow through with consistency, fairness and respect.
GET YOUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLER TO OPEN UP, TALK ABOUT FEELINGS
From the minute the door opens, you know something is wrong. But when you ask your child what happened at school, she says, “Oh nothing” and heads to her room.
What can you do to get your child to open up and talk about what is bothering her? Here are a few techniques to try:
• Reflect what you see. “You seem sad today. Anything happen at school?” • Try to avoid being judgmental. Don’t say things like, “You can’t really feel bad about a
silly thing like that.” • Help label your child’s feelings. “That must have made you pretty disappointed.” • Let your child know you understand her feelings. “I can imagine how crummy you felt
when Madison said that.” • Share an experience of your own. It can be good for your child to know that you have
had similar experiences. “Did I ever tell you about the time my best friend in school stopped speaking to me for a week?”
