September 10, 2015 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I hope you had a wonderful, relaxing Labor Day weekend! Churchill Junior High School Student – Future Problem Solving Team: Congratulations to one of our outstanding 9 th grade students, Kate De Groote, who participated with her team in the Future Problem Solving International Competition in June. Out of the 87 teams attending from all over the world, Kate and her team came in 13 th ! Impressive! Important message from the Granite Education Foundation: In Granite School District we are expecting over 70 newly arriving refugee families for the month of September and are in dire need of furniture. The number of arrivals could equate to the following: 70 kitchen chairs 23 couches 35 loveseats 13 – 18 kitchen tables If you are able to donate any of these items or know of others willing to donate, please contact Jesse Sheets (801-883-8457) for pickup. Thanks for spreading the word! Homework Routine: Amy has her evening planned. She will do her math homework before dinner, then follow up dessert with English and science. Afterward, she can unwind from a busy day. Sound impossible? It’s not. Help your student make homework go like clockwork with these strategies: Think it through Before your student begins, have him or her make a to-do list. Example: write a poem, read a history chapter, solve ten math problems. Then suggest that the tasks are numbered, from toughest to easiest, and start with the toughest. This “save the easiest for last” strategy will help her finish on a high note, perhaps inspiring your student to get in some extra studying! Think about time Ask your student to consider different time slots that can be used to get homework finished. Example: Set aside time on a weekend morning or evening. Additionally, encourage your student to complete at least one assignment at school every day. This might mean going to the library before school, during lunch, or after school. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

I hope you had a wonderful, relaxing Labor Day weekend!

Churchill Junior High School Student – Future Problem Solving Team:Congratulations to one of our outstanding 9th grade students, Kate De Groote, who participated with her team in the Future Problem Solving International Competition in June. Out of the 87 teams attending from all over the world, Kate and her team came in 13th! Impressive!

Important message from the Granite Education Foundation:In Granite School District we are expecting over 70 newly arriving refugee families for the month of September and are in dire need of furniture. The number of arrivals could equate to the following:

70 kitchen chairs 23 couches 35 loveseats 13 – 18 kitchen tables

If you are able to donate any of these items or know of others willing to donate, please contact Jesse Sheets (801-883-8457) for pickup.

Thanks for spreading the word!

Homework Routine:Amy has her evening planned. She will do her math homework before dinner, then follow up dessert with English and science. Afterward, she can unwind from a busy day.

Sound impossible? It’s not. Help your student make homework go like clockwork with these strategies:

Think it through

Before your student begins, have him or her make a to-do list. Example: write a poem, read a history chapter, solve ten math problems. Then suggest that the tasks are numbered, from toughest to easiest, and start with the toughest. This “save the easiest for last” strategy will help her finish on a high note, perhaps inspiring your student to get in some extra studying!

Think about time

Ask your student to consider different time slots that can be used to get homework finished. Example: Set aside time on a weekend morning or evening. Additionally, encourage your student to complete at least one assignment at school every day. This might mean going to the library before school, during lunch, or after school.

Think positive

Help your student see homework as a chance to prove independence by getting work done on time and doing it alone. Acknowledge that homework gives students a change to “show what they know”!
